I have a satchel of them here from ACCLAIM. What units did they come with? Some are black, some are "halo" green. I have about 50 of them.
I have a few boxes of them, along with some of the dev controllers (dakota?) And what looks like modded sidewinders?
USB to xbox, or xbox to usb? if they're xbox to usb they were for PhantasyStar online (if they're what i think they are) I would love to get one of each, if you're selling. I only have the black one. EDIT: nope, that isn't what i was talking about... I'd still like to buy one off of you tho. Nice avitar, is there video of that?
I always thought that those were used (aside from being able to use cheaper controllers) so keyboards could be used for testing/debugging, or for the development of new peripherals.
couldn't you order them from the xbox site for some game so you could use a keyboard in that game ...iirc?
I second the part about them being for dev kits. You use them for hooking up USB devices (duh), mostly keyboards, so you can activate debugger/console. And also, like someone else mentioned, they were made available on the Xbox site for usage with Phantasy Star Online, on demand from the public iirc.
The "dakota" controllers are physically the same as the large "Duke" controllers, except the large center jewel was green with just the Xbox font. Also, the casing seems to have a slighty gray tint to it. The label on the back of the controller should actually read "Dakota" on it. Basically, picture the large US controller with the Japanese Controller S color scheme and that's what it is. For some reason (cost? last minute aesthetics decision?) Microsoft changed the design to the Duke controllers which have a black casing and a clear jewel with the X logo that we're all familiar with. I've heard some people claim that they got Dakotas with their early Xbox systems, but I got a launch day unit and it never had that. Though, I did manage to find a Dakota sold at a used game store, which I bought for myself. It works on a retail Xbox, though it can flake out periodically prompting you to unplug and replug it often. Regarding the modded sidewinders, I'd be interested to see a pic of that. Bungie staffers were seen using those at Gamestock while demonstrating an early build of Halo. Be interesting to see if they're the same...
I tried finding mine last night to take pictures... but it's missing. It's one of those things i set aside so i wouldn't loose, then subsequently lost. I'll try and dig it up again tonight.
...I know what you mean, it doesn't even have a cable, its purely a plug in port adapter, almost triangular in shape.
The PSO adapters plug into the memory card slot on the controller. The devkit adapters plug directly into the controller port. The devkit adapters were never sold to the general public, though if you bought an AR it comes with a USB cable that is very similar to the devkit adapter. -hl718
It was a USB adapter so you could connect a keyboard. Microsoft sold them for $6 until december 2004. I grabbed a few of 'em, but now i don't know where i put them.
