JAP, JAPPO are racist slurs, period .

    You forgot

    3. fear of foreign people, and cultures.

And well well well, the word paki has a more extreme meaning in Danish, and the word is perker, and when that is used, it is more than just a pakistani being offended, but all muslims. So if you want to be halal butchered, then go ahead , and shout out it loud.

You'd deliberately use it in real life, even if the person you were with asked you not to? You call pakistanis "pakis" deliberately? I doubt it - if you do, that's pretty low.

As far as being offended with "it", just because you can take my point to extremes and it becomes ridiculous doesn't mean it isn't still a fair point. If someone is seriously offended by your behaviour and you have respect for them, you might want to consider changing your behaviour in one small, trivial way rather than antagonising them.

It doesn't matter how the word is derived, it's how it's used. 'Jap' is as offensive as any other racial slur. You say your uncle and family are fine using it to describe themselves - but how would they react to a white person shouting 'Paki!' in the street at them? Not very well I should imagine.

At the end of the day, 'Jap' is offensive to Japanese people whether you like it or not and if you use it around other people or on the internet, then people will treat you accordingly.

I never thought that 'JAP' was so offensive. I'm going to use JPN from now on.

Well if you want to debate if JAP is offensive or not, it's been my experience in life that that word has seriously negative associations with it. From my perspective it is a word that was usually said by someone who was angry with Japanese people or wanted to demean them. The word is rarely used, if ever, by someone trying to give a nice impression of Japan. I guess you could call that the anatomy of a racist word.

But like I said I'm not up for the tought police. I think that words and others like it will slowly be taken out of use in conversation over time. I'm sure JAP was a much used word during WWII, moreso that it is today.

I also thought that if people were using it and didn't know, then maybe they would consider not using it, if that's their choice. But ya, the word is offensive, no doubt.

From what I know the word JAP was used during the time after the pearl Harbor bombing. If I correct there is tons of adverts that speak "Swat the JAPS", "JAPPIES will make you so HAPPY", "You lousy JAP".

The word JAP became a signature for the term enemy towards the Japanese or a common hate slur during the world war two era. Imagine a spy or captured soilder being refered to as JAP 24/7 and lets not forget about the people in the camps who went home to hate mungers and was paid only a small precently for there homes and housing that was removed from them. Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah you know the whole drill with Hitler, Nuclear bombs, and stereotyping/ non stereotyping of such.

In fact during those times all those animations and comics that we came to know and love is based of during the time the word JAP was used often.

Now such words are not used anymore or is forgotten by most Japanese people.

It's spelt nigga now. It's probably an irony thing. They're just messing with us.

Some people claim it's a way of remembering the mistreatment of their ancestors so they can keep on hating everyone. The funny thing is that everyone sees white/english as being racist, but never see racism in anyone else ( or somehow it's justifiable ).

The JAP designation was removed from MAME a few years because it was deemed derogatory.

Us "brits" have been conditioned to only worry about political correctness in regards to other people.

Recently we've had christmas decorations banned in shops in some parts of the country, in case it upsets muslims ( who are allowed to put decorations up during their celebrations and if you mention that you are racist ).

Same goes for St Georges day vs St Patricks day.

There was a lottery scratch card with a picture of a flying pig that caused outrage a few years ago. A picture of a pig is apparently very offensive.

Burger King withdrew their ice cream after complaints that the logo looked like the word allah. http://jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/008141.php

In alot of places in England multi-culturism works, in other places it doesn't. We have a fair number of extremists who publicly say they want to turn the country into a muslim state. Most of them live on government handouts, so they are obviously just looking for a cushy ride but their followers don't see that.

Because it doesn't really affect our everyday lives, then we let it carry on. But you're going to have to do alot better than calling me a brit, limey or honky to offend me.

I'll put it to you this way.

The Japanese are oblivious to the insult.

I don't consider "Jap" and intentional insult by most people.

    now "Nip" that is racist.

Your freedom of speech ends where that of another person starts.
If someone is offended by using the term JAP, don't use it, even if you don't mean it like that. The fact that you know the underlying connotations, and still use it, makes you look ignorant to say the least.

Yeah but Nip is just the same as jap being JAPan and NIPon Both are just short versions of the country name. I've actually called my wife a jap once when we really had a serious and I mean very serious argument. She hit the roof !! She did nothing when I said nip however. Seems that many Japanese aren't aware of the word nip. Still, she has a few good ones for me which at first I thought were quite funny but now .........

Nippon is an older term (hence the WWII usage of 'nip'). Nihon is more commonly used these days.

So is Jinpang but you don't see anybody alarmed about that. Also where did they recently start using this beloved word in bad phrases?

Jap however is something that I have seen repeatively used time after time and time again and reported as a bad rep. That has to be ancient news.

There is even resteraunts, universities, and a telivision station with the word Nihon used in it. I really do not see it.

    What are you on about?

    - Nihon and Nippon are Japanese words for Japan.
    - 'Nip' is an derogatory term for a Japanese person.

    What's not to understand?
