Yep, I read the whole thread. I admit I didn't look into TRIM much. I just figured the 850 Evo has a modern controller and would take care of itself, more or less. Either way, I won't have a need to do any file deletion with the only possible exception being saved games. As previously mentioned, that can be negated with memory cards.
The original xbox uses the hdd for a cache. So it will get fragmented very quickly. The controller doesnt do trim - its down to the OS to do that. Before Trim was available, SSD's had garbage collection on the controller. This seems to have vanished as modern OSes support trim now.
I'll look into using one of my other SSD's, then. Every one I've tried so far has worked fine. Just wanted to give an update saying as much, since it didn't look like there had been anyone to try this and I was pretty amazed by the (current) results. Any particular recommended firmware controllers? SSD's aren't really my expertise. I just use them. Edit: I'll keep reading into it, but as far as I can tell TRIM would be "nice" to have but not required with a modern SSD. I'm going to leave the 850 Evo in there. Assuming it burns up the drive in short order (I don't think it will) I'll just get another one.
basically without trim you will get a drop in write speeds down to either 33% or 50% depending on how the type of flash. Also means it will wear at 2 or 3x the rate it should. Other than that, it will work OK.
