Hmm, I hadn't noticed it before, I am pretty anal about hissing or whine on my sound system. But no I didn't go back to regular carts to see if they were producing it now as well. I guess if it is my system(s) I need to do a full cap replacement?

all genesis/megadrive has various sound quality. model2 is the worst one. md1 probably best one, except latest board revison. megajet and genesis3 sounds not bad, but don't know about nomad. i not think that cap replacement may change something. problem in a system audio section, which is was not designed very well

here one guy says that nomad has good sound

Okay, that's good to know. I wonder why it seems like the whine just got louder though. I can hear it even on certain quiet scenes in Sega CD games, so you are right it is not Everdrive related.

Good luck with the recaping process, i can tell you from experience its a bitch...

Megadrive/Genesis: Moderate to difficult (too many caps to replace)

MegaCD I: HELL to do it (waaaaay too many caps and in weird places) Three different boards to recap inside..

Yep, my Japanese Mega Drive has the same issue as well. I'm still in the process of recapping it to see if it'll fix the problem, most of the caps I have left are audio caps so that might help. The VDP noise will get through the audio output even if I have the volume on both the MD and my stereo receiver muted.

Yeah, and my Genesis 1 is a vinyl board that I have already messed with before, it starts to melt at the temperatures needed desolder anything. Hopefully the hiss will remain only on certain screens with bright colors and not detract from gameplay time. I still have two Game Gears I tried an entire cap replacement on and haven't been motivated to finish them. There is no way I could do that to my original launch model Genesis.
