now some of them claim as a sale point the only graded copy in existence, or the only copy ever graded on ebay blah blah i hope these people go bankrupt ! then they will learn that they wasted 10 thousand dollars on a common factory sealed game that some of these people may have multiple copies in factory boxes of and i don't like vga at all sure it preserves the game forever ??? can it float in water ?? is it earthquake and dust proof ??? why would you pay so much money for a game you can get a hell of a lot cheaper that looks and plays the same minus the stupid plastic vga case that every ebay seller thinks makes the game worth 10 times the price etc rant over

 

That's how it works. Look at The Ooze. Under 6 bucks US cart only, while over 250 for the rare-yet-identical-gameplay Japanese version when complete with box/manual/etc.

Most infamous is probably Sonic on Master System. People will pay hundreds to get that UPC sticker. Despite not even being able to tell whether the contents inside the box are actually US in origin. Being exact same cart and manual, there's no telling if your so-called "US" copy is genuine as a whole. Who's to say PAL contents weren't swapped in?

VGA is a load of F*ing shit. There should be a law against such a pointless load of crap that they call a service. ANYONE could do what they do. Also the people that use it are morons too. "VGA said my game was mega rare so it must be" Idiots! Many members here have stuff that would piss on anything VGA has rated.

You can't fight greed. Which brings up the question of what alternative might work better. I can understand preservation and basic guidelines to estimate condition/rarity. But... Documented history of a game matters too. Some games are so infrequently posted for sale, let alone sold, anywhere regardless of price. It's simply not feasible to place a value on them.

Apparent "rarity" varies from a regional perspective as well. Items that may very well be a phenomenon to encounter in some countries, could be common as ever to others.

 

I sold all my cars, houses and pets for a copy of NFL 97' VGA Graded 99! So worth it.

Coins get graded like this but the difference between a game and a coin is a coin locked away is still 100% enjoyable where as a video game locked away is nothing more than silk plants in a case.

 

The thing is you can ask whatever you want for this stuff, but chances are when you ask retarded prices you're never going to sell it. This is common with anything. Just because you list an item for sale, whatever it is, doesn't imply worth or value. Just because you see someone else list the same item at some price, doesn't imply value. Value is only implied to some extent by what others have sold a similar item for in the market. Chances are no one has sold this crap for the insane amounts they want.

 

Yeah, none of those actually have any bids. Looks like a few idiots just think people are willing to pay for this mostly worthless crap if it's in a plastic box and has an arbitrary grade.

 

At a lower price this might actually add value for fools.

I'm going to create the kind of sticker they make and get some plastic covers.

 

The laughable thing is that unlike graders and evaluators for other antiques, where they would say that they have got a degree in such and such history or have been working in the field for 20 years or so, these jokers do not mention anything like this and I have emailed them asking what authority or experience do thay have of grading items and funnily enough they have not answered... although they do mention that they do have a master acrylic craftsman with over 20 years of experience onsite, so that is alright then...

I have twenty(!) years experience working in various video game shops, video game exhibitions and as a consultant... Should make me qualified to grade and value stuff...

Well, I think this is just a fad. Yeah, maybe some people are into buying VGA copies, but not enough to sustain all the sellers speculating with VGA items... it's just gonna implode... maybe.

Can somebody help me understand how the prices are worked out?
- Let's say somebody has a game that its market value is $100... How much does he pay to get it evaluated by VGA? Then for how much would he tried to sell this VGA copy on eBay? I'm curious to see what kind of profit this people are trying to make!

Example: Earthbound may be $1000 brand new on eBay, and now a guy is selling it for $2500 VGA-rated. How much profit is he aiming at?

What is funny is... if you ever wanted to take the copy out of the plastic box (which I suppose is totally sealed to avoid swaps etc), you would have to smash it, right? Damaging the game itself in the process xD

Anyway, so apparently every perfect game gets "90+" or so because there's just no such thing like a perfect copy!?

 

When this stupidity started, I've asked some sellers to take it out of the VGA thing, so I would buy it.
Some angrily answered: "No way! VGA costs money!" lol

I believe that if someone buy this kind of thing to "show", these people are those guys that don't have a gaming background on their life. There's people that gaming didn't played a role in their childhood.
