Not nostalgic but recently I discovered the music of Tatsujin for PcEngine. Amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW4PouUnauw
Oh wow... music of games... there are just so many of them to choose from really. For me, I get the most nostalgic hearing many good NES background themes, like the popular Ducktales Moon Level, or even with the SNES with Super Mario RPG's Geno's Woods theme. Hell, the Scott Pilgrim Game soundtrack actually threw me back to a nostalgic time just because of the style, even though it was just released this year.
Some of my nostalgic favourites: Forbidden Forest (C-64) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j86veyiIcS8 Eliminator (Atari ST) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziMLvBQb0uk Stargoose (Atari ST) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrDAgN4RBOo Deus Ex - Theme (PC) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3wlwQ3ufM4
Wow loads come to mind but here are a few: C64.. Sanxion, Track and field, Delta, Commando, Yie are kung fu, Action Biker, Phantom of the asteroids, One man and his droid, Flash gordon.. so many. One that gets me all nostalgic is for the Amiga.. Shadow of the beast - also a lot of the pirate intos had excellent music.....so I'm told ;-)
The music for 'Flashback', 'Frontier: Elite II', the Sonic trilogy and a half, Cannon Fodder on the Amiga, the menu music for Fire & Ice (game was a bit pants, though), the Lucasarts games (esp. DOTT), Simon The Sorcerer... As you can tell, pretty much an Amiga and PC gamer when I was younger (the Sonic trilogy is only in there due to my first PC being an Amstrad MegaPC ).
One of Tim's finest on the cevi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY8m2nWc_k0&feature=player_embedded Unfortuntely unused/unreleased.
Zero Wing. People tend to focus on the amusing intro, but it's also a decent game and the soundtrack is fantastic. Scrap Brain Zone on Sonic SMS. Pure nostalgia.
Any of the tunes in Unirally on the SNES, the underwater level in the first Donkey Kong game on the SNES and the end credits from Super Mario Land on the original Gameboy but my all time favourite piece of game music is from Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion on the Mega Drive, it's part 3 of level one where he has to navigate the leaves and spiders:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiT1J5DzSJo from 2:07 - 2:48, absolutely gorgeous.
Speaking of.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGAvDAQIDGc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ODKKILZiYY Can't believe no one mentioned Plok on the SNES! According to a rumor, Shigeru Miyamoto heard one of the songs, and could not believe it was coming out of an unmodified SNES. Tim Follin definitely was a pimp composer.
^^ This is one of mine too. Also, Jolly Roger Bay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqj2L4C7k_s&feature=fvst
I've been playing the ZX Spectrum Elite Collection on the iPhone... and while the games are largely rubbish, the music for Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy and Starquake almost brought a tear to my eye. I was playing those games during the best days of my life!
It used to make me feel unspeakably sad when Mario looked directly at you once the credits rolled – just before he ran off into Peach's castle – as if to say goodbye. Jeez, I'm a grown man, and thinking about that moment still makes me feel maudlin!
