Well, I guess I can admit it. I'm obsessed with the series, even as a kid I'd write my own storyline based off the game. The teachers hated me for it (not sure why, I just gathered that they were no smarter than an 7 year old anyway). You maybe wondering, why after all the years of this game being out, played and sold, that I bring up a discussion thread. At the moment, I've been Playing Carmageddon:Reincarnation - for some of you who follow me on Twitter will know that I've been porting a few cars from the series, which I've enjoyed doing through the process. It's inspired me to learn 3D as well, slowly learning though. I'm not not the sharpest tool. Currently now, along with the porting of the cars. I'm poking around the game's data, I'm learning to reverse engineer the game's archives with someone from the C:R modding community. He's quite a genius with programming and reverse engineering as it is with C:R so I asked him for help. He was able to tell me the data archives are not encrypted, or compressed, which means it will be very simple process. After him telling me the basics, I looked through the V82 data archives and found nothing unreleased in terms of number of cars. V8 on the other hand has one extra set of data for the cars, not sure if this is an unused model or what but I'll have to wait and see till I learn more. Anyhow, to boost off the discussion, if anyone is interested in the game as much as I have been. What's your best memories of it? I still remember some scenes of the game in my memory, playing it as a kid. I found it extremely difficult, don't think I ever unlocked a single car. I still enjoyed it though. The copy I used to rent over and over again is the same copy I own today, and thinking about that for second, is quite weird
I love second offense, in my opinion the best vehicular combat game ever. Little gif playing with a friend.
You just missed out from totalling the Palomino hahah Wish I could still play the game with someone though.
you could always try Vigilante 8 Arcade on XBLA, its a crappy remake of the first though at least it has online capability. I still own a DC copy of 2nd offense, a great game and a rare example of a sequel being better than its predecessor.
I'm looking for that. And since when is a sequel being better than the original rare? Sonic 2 > Sonic 1, Halo 2, almost nobody says FFI is their favorite, SMB 3, I could go on.
I liked the original more for some reason, me and my father played it all the time, I had an awesome time completing the original and unlocking the bonus level for the n64.
I own it, but it's horrible. Feels quite unfinished too. List could go on about how much I dislike it. I just wanted a bumped up version of the classics but apparently the producer forgot what the original played liked it seems.
Interstate 76 was very ahead of it time, and even looking back to Vigilante 8, the effects were fantastic. A lot of them which I never saw in another N64 game or Playstation for that matter. Also found this on a demo disc a few minutes ago. Can't say no to beta footage :>
i loved vigilante8 but my all time favorite vehicle combat game is TwistedMetal 1 , 2 and 3
I'm glad this thread was made! My dad also played Vigilante 8: Second Offense. Played it for the Dreamcast on a daily basis. He would always input the unlock everything code then just set up arcade battles. Goliath Halftrack was always the choice of vehicle. I remember the Flying All Star Trio having a KILLER special but lacking much defense. I always loved the NASA level. I also remember the campaign mode being pretty tough, never really got too far. Need to pop that game back in my DC. I also own the original V8 for the PlayStation, but it isn't nearly as good as 2.
Ol Bumpo! I've found even more information about the series. What I've gathered so far is, this interview with one of the lead programmers. It was mentioned how much of a pain it was to program on the Dreamcast and that online play was considered. Found that very interesting and decided to share. My hunt still continues to get in touch with these developers. I won't give up. EDIT: I heard back from one of the lead developers! 2017 made already.
That was an interesting read. We owned the original V8 for the n64, and I remember playing the crap out of it. I remember it being a great game when friends were over, lots of fun in multiplayer. I think my brother has the cart now... but now I know that V8:SO is for Dreamcast as well I'll have to pick it up!
Thought I'd update on some findings. I'm guessing this is the "Spanish Mission" in play here. The target selected in the Bomber which you cannot target with homing weapons. You can also see the original detailed HUD, very much similar to Interstate '76 Here's Jade Champion in motion, originally it was said that she was cut from the game early on - However seems rather setup, and is in fact Jade from Interstate '76. Not sure on the reason why she was cut from the game. She was also not a replacement for Chassey Blue, Rattler was in the same arena. Valley Farms had paved roads, instead of the later dirt roads. Final: Aircraft Graveyard, similar instead the "roads" were not raised. Final: Will update more soon.
Found some interesting character bios. Let alone, "Y" the Alien doesn't actually have history at all. Found this unused in the game's code. Some other unused/beta string findings: Moon Trekker's beta name was "Lunar Explorer". I'm not sure where "Explorer" disapeared to though.. Palomino XIII Beta name Xanadu RV beta name Wonderwagon beta name Wapiti 4WD beta name
A single wheel appears to be selectable through memory. Weirdly, spawns in game (depending on the map) with blank weapons, unable to target enemies and full of pickups that never expire (PU_Shield, PU_Radarjammer, PU_Multipler). Can't move in game, yet enemies can collide with "corner" and also target it. Invincible, and in some maps, HUD won't load.. Together with (depending on the map again) spawns with 65XXX ammo of 'something'. The most interesting thing on this, is it shows the "not available" pose like in the beta of the game.
There was a time I was not a good kid. I did drugs and other shit but one thing I did during this time was skip school with 2 friends smoke weed and play V8 on PS1. Not played it since but damn was fun. Also I was impressed by the CG cutscenes back then. Pretty sure they would look like shit now but at the same time I love me some 90s CGI.
I played the first one quite a bit back in the day. I recently tried to play the first Twisted Metal on my PS1 and holy crap does it look terrible. I can't bring myself to play it again. Whoever thought pressing up on the d-pad to accelerate was a good ideal?
