I don't see how this "proves" anything. That model doesn't look much different from the real Saturn VF2, except when they tried to get two characters on screen they had to reduce the polygon count.

More polygon count, more resolution (maybe?) and more facial details. Would be cool to see it moving..maybe the difference lays there...

We've seen something like that before 1998 in Digital Dance Mix Namie Amuro (1997).

The photo/video shows only a single character on screen - exactly like Digital Dance Mix, which could be even better since it was commercially released.

that is a completely different video for the Arcade VF2 as you mentioned. The image saturn_worship posted isn't from that video. The videos I have / had are also not from that arcade video. These videos were released before the Saturn's Japanese launch. that's why games such as Magic Knight Rayearth was still in the map testing stage and Virtual Racing looked total ass and Panzer Dragoon was the CG Mockup that all the magazines said was a 32X version. If only they verified their material they would have found out it was a CG Mock of what was supposed to be the Saturn.

Honestly journalism back then was really kooky. A lot of information they would report was either just guessing or misinterpreted.

I will never forget how gamepro would try to review 64 games early by playing the japanese version of the game.

See the reviews for mario kart 64 and star fox 64 and see the pics with Japanese text or different logos in the background.

The pics i posted are from the Virtua Fighter 2 Saturn tech demo sown to press, nothing to do with that video. Anyways, good point again Taucias, this kind of debate is positive, because it can clarify things.

Wasn't VF2 released in Arcades after the Saturn launch?

No idea but I do know for a fact (thanks to the Japanese 1st issue of Sega Saturn magazine)that Sega made it public that they were working on VF2 just before VF1 was released which was a Saturn launch title.

I'm sure they maintained all the effort for VF2 and made the quick port of VF1 we saw on saturn...

I know you're probably sick of me banging on about Saturn Virtua Fighter 3, but did you know that before Lockheed finished designing the Model 3 board there were plans to develop VF3 on Model 2 instead, using a modified version of the previous installment's engine? Here's a selection of Yu Suzuki quotes on the subject, taken from a preview long before its unveiling in the regular Virtua City feature by AM2 that appeared in later issues of the official Sega Magazine:

"We're now looking at ten different techniques. Of course, we don't know yet which we will use, or which will still be too difficult, but we must use at least three or four new techniques to make it worthy to be called Virtua Fighter 3... That's a possibility... Or there's the idea that we could become more familiar with Model Two and find out its hidden capacity. But with some of the techniques being researched now would be physically impossible with Model Two. Really, we'd like to do it with a new board... We're looking at new characters along with the techniques... We are not thinking deeply about male characters - maybe we'll just add one to the original line-up... Though at a quick glance it looks like VF2, the feeling of control is very direct and an expert would see there are fine differences. Of course, there are visual differences too, but I can't show you them yet!... Recently, I've been putting my energies into Saturn and so the arcade side has been powered down. Now that the capabilities of the new SGL OS (including that for ST-V development) have been brought out, I'd like to have a go in this field. Of course, there will still be many arcade games coming out."

Converting VF1 was probably the lowest task on AM2's priority list, considering the other projects that were ongoing simultaneously. Actually, starting from around 1994 this department had a workload that may have killed most lesser teams, including Saturn versions of the aforementioned VF, Daytona USA and Virtua Cop, not forgetting VF2, which clearly received a lot of attention. On top of this, we can include arcade games such as Virtua Striker, Virtua Cop 2 plus maybe the seed of what became Fighting Vipers and Sonic The Fighters (let's not also forget that VF3 was in the earliest stages of production back then as well, it would seem). Finally, we know this was around the time Suzuki first properly considered a role playing game based on the VF characters... and we all know what happened to that, right?!

I don't understand why VF2 stuff was being shown on the Saturn before VF2 was released in the arcades.

Ergo, it is my belief that those screens are not Saturn screens at all.
