Virtual Boy

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by SuperFunkNinjaYoshiiKun, Jul 11, 2004.

  1. Following my previous hunt for a quirky cool Japanese console (out of a Playdia, Marty,PC-FX and Pippin), I've decided upon a Virtual Boy instead.

There's a couple of quality shooters (Red Alarm and Vertical Force) and perhaps another 2 or 3 games that take my fancy: WarioLand, Golf and maybe Pinball.

The machines also seem damn cheap on EvilBay.

So, who else has got a VB? What do you reckon to 'em?

http://www.planetvb.com/ This is a good info site i've found.

Absolutely gutting to see all those unreleased games. Especially as there's about 3 shooters from Coconuts Japan (cool name). What else have Coconuts developed for?

Anyone know how many of the unreleased games have been found and released? Especially as this site details interesting things like building a flash cart, a rumble pad and a link cable (doesn't work!!):

Cool. Cheers. Bring on the eye operations and brain cancer, VB is cool.

    VBs are absolutely brilliant!...

    <NOFLAMES>
The VB is THEE most original games console created.
    </NOFLAMES>

Personally, I'm not a huge Nintendo fan, but Nintendo deserve to go down for creating a fantastically different machine. They also had the balls to put it into production (taking the financial risk) - can't see Sony, M$ doing that.....

The VB does quickly feck you up....you can't play it for hours for instance.....but for something different it takes the biscuit...

If you buy one try and get the mains adapter with it....Telegames sell them.

The price of games are quite skewed - they're either cheap or extortinate, but there's alot out there which are cheap.

    Go for it!

Coconuts Japan don't really develop many game but more of a distributor for western games in Japan. They did however release (developed or not) a few games on the Super Famicom that I remember well. 99% of them were pretty much crap as well. Sort of like Imagineer. There was one game that I'm sure Coconuts Japan did develop though called Action Pistachio. It was a pure Sonic rip off that lacked any excitement or speed. And yes, the star was a white pistachio nut.

Ack a virtual boy, i can't look into one of those for more then 5 minutes before i get the feeling my eyes want to pop out :smt009

Verry nice piece of collecting thoug, pretty special and not to expensive, but gameing on it is just really bad for your eyes.

Ii remeber some japanese warning picture they had in stores stating that children below a certain age were not to use it because it could cause them permanent eye damage at early age.

  7. Yeah, those things are pretty hard on the eyes, but they are really interesting. I had a friend with one and I spent some time playing Pinball, and I must say it was really neat. Just don't play it for more than 15 minutes at a time. I'm not sure if brain cancer is really much of a risk, especially since this was just a simple LCD screen and most of us walk around with a cellphone to our ears at least once a day, but it can definately strain your eyes. :smt103

Are there any links to go along with info on these unreleased shooters mentioned above? I'd kindof like to see some info on that...

  8. Try www.planetvb.com for info on unreleased games. Unfortunately tho, there are no piccies or info for any of the Coconuts shmups, other than they were in development.

There is more info for some of the other unreleased games tho.

There was a flyer for the VB horse jockey game on Yahoo Japan about a month ago. It finished at about 90,000 yen (yes... 90, 000 yen!). Rinkya was the high bidder... quite possibly the owner of that site.

:smt009 I remember just after Nintendo had decided that Virtua Boy was a failure...

KB Toys had them for like 20 bucks...I wanted one so much, but my parents wouldn't let me...

i dont really know why the virtual boy makes your eyes feeling weird after a whie, but it shouldnt happen because red is the color that our eyes can adapt easily in the dark :S try putting a normal yellow light in the night in your eyes and then a red one and wont feel anything with the red one... :smt017

IIRC, Rinkya uses that account to bid on everything for everyone... I've been outbid by them a few times :(

Actually that's how I got mine, for $29.95 at a KB blowout sale. Managed to snag Wario land and Red Alarm too. However (stupidly) I didn't get the AC adapter, foolishly thinking I could just use the universal one I already owned. Lo and behold it only works with the "official" AC (goddammit!)

Yeas, I have to reinterate not to play it for more than 15 minutes at a time, no doubt somebody out there went blind from playing this thing.

As far as unreleased games go, didn't somebody a looong time ago post a video of Faceball 2000 for the VB here? I think that was it, it was a bouncing happy face type game. Looked pretty cool.

If Faceball sucked hard on every other system it was for, how could it be any better on VB?

    Effects your eyes?????

Only if you were used to looking at magazines under your bed sheets when you were younger :smt043

I play mine for an hour or two from time to time with the pause mode
    switched on.

I have 4 VB`s 2 us and 2 Jpn and virtually "all" the games except Gundam + Bowloing.

One of the best VB sites is Ferry`s

    www.virtual-boy.org

I have known Ferry for several years now and he almost keeps the VB scene alive........as well as KR155E here.

A group of us have aquired a VB Dev kit....and are trying to get some games made for it :smt023

Well, maybe it wasn't Faceball, it was kind of like reverse breakout, you play a bouncing happyface that has to land on assorted tiles and kncok them out.

Can't remember what it was called. Goddamm drugs.

The video was on the old board somewhere. Can we still access the old posts or are all of them lost forever?
