This may have been asked before, but I'll ask anyway. Do you recommend installing Windows Vista? I have access to a legal version of it so getting a hold of it is no problem, but I'm a little wary of installing an operating system that uses the GPU for a lot of the interface. When you're running a game, does the user interface significantly slow it down? That is, do games or other applications run slower on it than in XP? Also, is the compatibility for XP applications good? Are there any that don't work? I'm somewhat tempted to install it simply because of DirectX 10 and because there is apparently going to be a Vista-only port of Halo 2 (which pisses me off, but I'll probably end up buying it).
right now, unless you wanna try the new gui and programs, i don't recommand it. I enjoyed what i've seen of it (to tell you the truth, im positivly impressed, and i'm no microsoft/windows fan at all), but your games won't run any better, and the beta doesnt have directx 10 in it anyway.
I second that. Seriously, there is no actual reason to use it. If you like the visuals, just get the vista transformation pack 5.5 for xp. Or play Halo 2 on an xbox. Better.
Just wait a whole year. By then, good DX10 games like Crysis, etc. would be out and video cards would be fast enough to handle the game at very high settings.
Not directly related, but I didn't want to start another thread. What kind of experiences have you guys had with Windows XP 64-bit? I've heard that it causes some compatibility issues. Does the 64-bit version really increase performance very much? Specifically, does it make any difference in games?
I just read Nvidia won't be making Vista drivers for Nforce2 motherboards. So, no Vista for me anytime soon (wasn't thinking on updating now anyway). I'm happy with Win XP Pro (+ tons of security add-ons) and Ubuntu Linux
