Wow... didn't know that. I don't like the idea but then again, it's for a handheld. I hope the next gen of consoles aren't like that.

Meh I'm sure we're going to see chinese memcard clones for $5 in a couple months

About the other bullshit, well thats hacker fodder: I give it 5 months max until it gets open wide like lohan after 2 lines of coke

After that people playing pirated games will get a better overall experience with the vita than those buying legally through the PSN

    Sad but true...

I was half-joking in my previous post, but the truth is I'm becoming less and less interested in the Vita. After the 3DS' terrible launch and hearing all the cool things the Vita would offer, I decided to hold off buying a 3DS (and wait for the inevitable hardware revision) and put the money towards a Vita. The system itself actually seems great, it just has a lot of baggage that's holding me back from purchasing one.

I also don't think the Vita will be hacked in 5 months and if it is, it wont be anywhere near as open as the PSP was. After the PSP/PS3/PSN fiasco, I think Sony is taking every necessary security precaution to prevent another PSP from happening. Having CFW opened up so many possibilities on the PSP and I hope the Vita gets to that point eventually. Imagine the homebrew and emulation potential the Vita has should it become as open as the PSP.

Ideally such homebrew and emulators would be made possible but without making piracy of PSP or Vita games possible. It would be nice if an appropriate "sand box" were available and not shut down. I'm sure the Vita has alot of potential for homebrew and emulators. But that's not the reason Sony created the device, it's to sell licensed product and make money.

Yeah, it's called OpenPandora, or Dingoo for a cheaper alternative.

Why? What is wrong with people having options. I think it's bullshit I can't get certain PSP games digitally (which means I can't play them on a vita) because said publisher was too lazy to resubmit an iso to sony (yes I know much more is involved then that but it's not impossible unless the company is dead). Now with the vita setup if I want a new import game and don't want to pay crazy markup, wait 1-2 weeks or less by paying high shipping fees, I can now preload my psn account and the same night it's out I can get it instantly. Sure PSN cards do get markups as well but if you find the right people it's not that much (plus psn games in japan tend to be a little bit cheaper).

In good time maybe but not in the near future. The cards are actually entirely custom (same size as M2 but entirely different pin setup) and are loaded out the ass with security measures.

Maybe, maybe not. The big issue with hacking the vita this time around is the fact the vita is the gate keeper. You can't just build a custom memory card reader and write files to the card. So any method will first have to find a way to get the OS to let it even copy the data over (if PSP emulation isn't properly sandboxed, maybe that will be their way through).

Other then maybe fan trans patches. I don't see anything pirated games could offer over legal games this time around. It the excuse is being able to carry all your games with you, well fuck that is why PSN is there. Unlike PSP, I really don't see how it will offer anything more.

Are you seriously void of any ability to critically think for a change? Just wondering.

The whole point for it being mandatory is so that no game ever sold at retail is not offered digitally. There are so many people who still get pissed off there isn't a digital version of some PSP games on the PSN store. It does not mean that sony is keeping games from retail. All major Vita games are getting a retail release and anything that is digitally only is a game not big enough to justify a box copy. Then again, if some shitty publisher whats to sell you Elf Bowling on a retail cart they are more then welcome to do so.

    :banghead: Really?

Your prices are wrong. FYI. Official prices are still high but not as high as what you listed.

Are you seriously void of any ability to not get butthurt over opinions that aren't the same as yours? Just wondering.

I have nothing against small, cheap games like Angry Birds being offered digital only. I just hate the idea of retail being optional with digital being mandatory. Why anyone would prefer a digital copy makes no sense to me, since all you're doing is paying for the rights to play a game. Once the servers shut down and you can't re-download the game you bought, you're fucked. You say all major Vita games will be have a retail release, but if modern gaming has shown me anything, that might not be true. Companies are slowly trying to make the move to digital only, since they make more money without having to spend anything producing physical copies all while charging the same price.

Yes, really. Unless what I've heard is wrong. Not that they're serious issues or anything.

Ah, so I am. My apologies, the prices are: 4GB=$20, 8GB=$30, 16GB=$60, 32GB=$100. That's still a ridiculous price when compared to the prices of the memory sticks used for the PSP.

I'm not the one going on a magical rant of mythic proportions.

Name one major game/film you can't get unless you go digital only...

Also people are so quick to jump on the "look they are charging the same" but completely ignore the frequent sales of digital content. I mean look no further then Steam which is always putting stuff on sale (even brand new games). Sony is no different and is offering sales/discounts on a weekly basis (I ended up with a digital copy of RDR w/ all DLC, inc zombie for $23 vs the GOTY disc version is $30-$40 right now). As the digital space gets more crowded, more companies will have to resort to putting their stuff on sale to drive demand, much like it is for retail.

With publishers not having to produce anything, digital does give the advantage of being able to still buy games that no longer are carried by retailers or otherwise at retail would have gotten a small print run and cost a fortune to buy. This happen a **** ton in the PS2 era.

Why everybody acts like retail is nothing but their friend confuses me (specially with all the crap places like gamestop pull).

I personally have slowly moved more towards digital out of convenience. I at one time had 100+ PSP UMD. I liked keeping them around to have access to play them but having to move around all that bulk was becoming ridiculous. I don't really like selling my games as I regret it pretty quickly but having to keep so many games around on the chance I might want to play them again is getting silly as we keep adding more console generations.

While there has been a few instances of content being pulled on some digital services (sony has pulled stuff but anybody who bought it still always has access to it, even if the publisher no longer exist), It's not like PSN or XBL are going anywhere any time soon. As well (at least for vita/PSP), you're given tons of ways to back up your content that you can restore and play at any time. Media isn't perfect either, what if the media breaks or you simply miss place it. Not like you can freely clone another.

Best to understand what you're trying to make a point on. Yes it is rumored that some games might be sub native res. This isn't really a shocker or something to freak out since it's just launch software. It's not like any system out there came out of the gate with something as ambitious as Uncharted in the first place.

Lets also not forget that quite a few big 360 games are not even native 720p (they are usually something slightly above 480p and putting heavy reliance on the hw's upscale.

As advanced as the vita is, it's GPU shaders are not as fast as what are in current gen consoles. It will probably take a bit for devs to take more efficient use of the systems GPU.

Also vita screen shots are somewhat miss leading. The colors and contrast you get on the vita screen are much more then most PC monitors. Something that might look washed out on a PC looks entirely different on a vita with crazy color variations.

Not all memory sticks are the same though. I will freely admit the prices do suck and I wish the unit had some internal storage. Yet people (not you) trying to compare then to SD cards are not making reasonable comparisons.

Just worth saying. I know people like to see me as a corporate whore around here but i'm not. I just don't get uppity over every little thing. I understand and respect difference of opinion but despise when people make up or reach for every micro nugget to justify their position as being definitive.

In my defense, I posted that as sort of a joke while I was tired late last night. I know that's not a good excuse, but it's an excuse nonetheless. :)

As for my obvious hate for digital only releases, I guess it's just due to me being an old fashioned guy. Whether it be games, movies, books, etc I just don't like the idea of spending my hard earned money on something that's only data without any physical object along with it. I'm aware steam and to a lesser extent PSN/XBLA have sales, but it still annoys me when I see a semi-old game I can get in stores for $20-$30 being offered digitally for a full $60. That shit pisses me off.

I can understand the love affair with physical media. I'm not against it and I've been gaming for ages (1st console I had access to was a 2600). I have a thing for arcade games and am willing to fork out the cash for the arcade version then settling for a console port. Yet I don't get how people have to despise digital content to the point of making up excuses based on fictional examples. Both mediums have their good and bad points.

I agree. That stuff pisses the crap out of me as well. So I simply don't buy them. I think as we continue more down the digital route we will see more trying to be like steam in terms of pricing.

The only people buying this are people who have to ride trains in Japan, and children.

And your point? There is a reason why PSP, what some consider a failure, still has sold more systems world wide then any current gen console. Handhelds dominate Japan and have some decent success elsewhere.

As someone who owns and has been enjoying the vita thought I'd give my thoughts on the psn situation...

The reason digital downloads via psn for all games is great is because lets say you've been wanting a game forever and instead of waiting for the gameshop to open or simply being too lazy to take the trip, you can just purchase it off psn and its right on your memory stick. This will also be good when the game hits at midnight and you just have to have it now. Just download and its there.

Right now personally I'm buying games on cart (via import) because the japan psn cards are just not in stock at play asia etc to get points asap by email. Its easier to just buy the game outright. When the US store launch opens, and memory cards are cheaper, I'm not sure whether I will stick to carts or psn. I'm so used to having a modded psp with a memory card full of emulators etc that with the vita buying games on psn and just having them on a card will not be that big a stretch. Of course your not getting the packaging and cart that way.

As for old games from umd having to rebuy them, thats a big annoyance. You are getting to play them on an upconverted screen which is somewhat of an advantage. Macross Ultimate Frontier is not available on japan psn at all and its never coming to the states. That game would look amazing on the vita screen but I'll always have my psp if I want to play it.

Personally I've been playing my vita now pretty steadily, making my way through Dynasty Warriors Next which is great, waiting on some games imported. I know Wipeout in January is a must buy. Its a great system and the US launch with all the games from japan out on one day is going to be amazing.

Buygame2.com has some in stock and they will email the code. Or you could ask a member who lives in japan (like GP or Yak) to buy one for you. =)

    :love2:
You know they announced Gundam Seed Battle (by artdink) in this weeks famitsu (there are pics up on famitsu.com). Based on the screen shots and their work on Trial Frontier this game is going to be pretty to watch (not on a technical level but more on the effects/particle side).

    I have a honest question: How's the D-pad?

I always had a hard time with the PSP D-pad. I could never do well in Street Fighter or do spells in Castlevania SOTN. So yeah, did they improve it?

The PSP-2000 model improved the D-Pad over the 1000. Hopefully they didn't go backward with the 3000 or Vita.

    I owned a 1000, 2000, and a PSP-GO and I didn't like the D-pad on either of them.

D-pad is good. I been putting mine to good use on some NeoGeo Games & UMvC3. Less mushy of the PSP pads but not too clicky like the 3DS. It's a pretty decent balance (note, I think saturn is the best 2D d-pad).

Oh man 2D games are godly on this screen, great colors and no ghosting (at least from what I can see). Damn sony better get ps1 support out quickly so I can play some 2d ps1 goodness on my vita (PS1 support is coming soon, just not out atm, NeoGeo & TG16 are actually just the psp releases running through the PSP emu on vita).

99.9% of my time spent using my handhelds is indoors but even then I spend 99.9% of my time on a home console or PC so it really isn't worth the huge chunk of change to me, especially when money is tight. Perhaps if I had a job that required commuting on public transport for any reasonable length of time it would be worthwhile, but given as I still have my trusty PSP 3000 and Final Fantasy VII + VIII I doubt I'll need an upgrade for a considerable amount of time.

You mean the fighting games don't play like ass? And minimal ghosting? That's good to hear. Now if only Sony didn't go out of their way to piss me off whenever they have the chance...
