We've been down this road before: PS4: It's not bundled, so it will have 3-12 games supporting it then die Rift: Owned by facebook, enough said. The valve headset: probably do decent given it can be used for anything.
I tried the rift and honestly though it was amazing. I trully felt part of the world. So much so I was afraid of going faster on my horse as I felt I was going to fall off it! Edit, my 19000th post and a new avatar!
I think at least VR is more appealing than 3D was. 3D was so so bad, and I know it'll come back in 15-20 years.
That's exactly what I think ! I think the Valve/HTC VR headset will work very well. The problem for most people will be the price. I expect this thing to cost no less than $400.
Remember how successful this thing was ? Actually 77 games supported this 3d feature, but the golden age of 3D TV's has gone by and nobody speaks of this anymore.
When it comes to 3D TVs/headsets i always ask 3 questions. 1) Can you use it for 8+ hours straight without eye strain or headaches just like any good LCD/CRT monitor? 2) What about input lag <5ms? 3) What software supports it? If it's less than 300 titles - forget it. There's no such device yet.
You go from bagging on VR to "wanting" Samus.... The only way you'll ever have her is VR, my friend =] I'm ready for the Rift. As a hobbyist game designer, the ease of including it within Source games & utilizing it in Unity is really exciting! I don't see this being anywhere near the failure of VR of the old, considering our current state of computing, I see it as here to stay. Let's hope for the best!
You can't rule my life! Oh and real slick coming from a guy who has Samus in his avatar too Is there that much of an interest, people like jump at it? Actually probably so, considering so many want "smart watches". Seems VR has a lot of side effects too, so how many would be able to enjoy it?
I for one am actually excited about VR. You can knock it all you like as the return of an old fad, but the fact is that technology is finally at the level where it'll actually be possible this time. I don't know if there will be a big boom in VR-exclusive games, probably not, but at the very least I hope most games will have support for stereoscopic 3D (like nvidia 3D Vision does) and maybe the ability to move the camera with your head. For those who are excited about VR, what's your opinion on the different models? Here's mine: Morpheus - the fact that it's a PS4 accrssory is going to hamstring it. It's going to need to scale back the visuals to compensate for the PS4s processing power and will be lucky to run at 1080p. However, for what it is, I'm sure it will still be good and initial impressions seem to agree. In terms of design, the Morpheus looks the best and seems to be the most comfortable from what I've read. Also has this clever design that allows you to lift it from your face without actually taking the unit off your head. Rift - the original new-wave VR unit. In terms of staff, it's got someone who really wants make a quality VR unit (it's creator), one of the smartest programmers in history (John Carmack) on board. It's also got a lot of funding and a long development time too. I think these things will make the Rift a contender for one of the best VR systems. It may be owned by FaceBook now, but if they're smart, they'll keep the two separate. It's intended for PC, so no limitations on processing power or resolution either. And I think a high resolution will be key to selling the illusion. Vive - This unit seems very similar to the rift, with the advantage of having built-in support for movement. It's also got control sorted out too, which is something the Rift hasn't worked out yet. It's also got Valve behind it, and these guys know games. And unlike the Rift, we actually have a launch date. Provided this unit wasn't a rush job created after the announcement of the Rift, I think this one might be the one to watch out for!
I think the problem is that there's all these competing VR platforms coming (Morpheus, Hololens, Rift, Vive, Samsung's, Apple will probably make one, so that's 5 confirmed and 1 maybe). Unless the software is cross compatible, some games will be Morpheus exclusive, or Vive exclusive, or Hololens exclusive, etc, and buying 1 is going to be a stretch for most people, let alone 5.
I am neutral about VR, I get it's point seeing those Youtube videos of users playing it. But I actually think it might not be a good fit for me as I tend to using my eyes instead of my head in movement. So moving my neck to see more viewpoint is kinda annoying for me. Unless one of those VR devices has some sort of eye detection/movement.
The API's might not be compatible, but many game engines are including support for multiple headsets. I know that I am going to try to target the Morpheus and Rift right now through Unreal, and look into others as they get released and integrated into the engine.
