After the initial run, the kits switched to the standard black Dukes. In that regard, it's similar to the Blue PSX debug controllers. First run systems had them. Subsequent releases did not.

Most of them likely got used and abused. I thought the green controller looked pretty sleek so I kept one in the original white label box in my desk drawer. Pulled it out for display every now and then, but the enthusiast in me couldn't bear to put it through the same sort of abuse the other controllers saw. Hence, this one was spared. ;)

So the Dakota controllers, were they shipped with the DVT3? Without you or OE around much, it has been hard to confirm things.

I don't recall which specific revision was shipped with the DVT3. You have to remember that the controllers were developed along their own iteration cycle in parallel to the console. So there were multiple revisions of the Dakota before the final "Duke" revision was settled upon. You actually see the same in the 360 controllers if you look at the Krypton and Radon development cycles. There are some that look noticeably different from retail and there are others that look identical to retail units, save for the Xbox 360 logo button not being installed.

So while final debug kits shipped with final controllers, early development kits for both the Xbox and Xbox 360 both shipped with non-final controllers. If you collected multiple Dakotas from multiple sources, I wouldn't be surprised if you found differences between the individual units.

I know, I have two quite different Dakotas (with two having been sold), and have had a few different revisions of Kryptons for the 360. Was just curious if you had any idea of what was coming with the kits at the time, that's all.

They were shipped with some (not all) of the DTL-3's, and those were only produced for a single week in 2001. I've heard rumors that some went out with the first shippment of DTL-4 units, but i've never seen them. If HL says he has one with a DTL-4, i'd be inclined to believe him. I think the number of green dukes produced is only in the hundreds. I'm actually curious why they were given out with the launch team consoles, since those were only put together in december of 2001. Where were these things sitting for 6 months?

I used to have a breakdown of the entire history of xbox controllers, going down to the weeks of manufacturing, but... well, that site doesn't exist anymore and my memory of 12 year old controller manufacturing dates is getting fuzzy.

I'm still curious where my Alamo came from.

Alamos were a manufacturing sample so engineers could see how all the internals functioned (hence why they're clear). The dakotas were supposed to be the final design, but there was a flaw with the firmware in the deadzone reset code.

The deadzone problem wasn't actually fixed in the dukes, they just added code in the firmware to reset the deadzone if you spun the sticks around in a circle a few times. I'm not sure how it was handled in the S-types, I assume they left the reset code as-is.
