That must be the worst controller design in history. Looks crappy and probably feels like a slippery banana. I can only imagine how much "grip" those L and R triggers must provide... lol. Sony really deserved all the hate they received for this stupid thing and I still don't know how a gigantic corporation can make such a crazy marketing mistake. This thing just oozed failure and I'm 100% certain that nobody would've loved to see this if it wasn't for the stupidity of the design and for being abandoned even for the dev kits.

It was on purpose, I heard that the designer wanted something 'Avant-garde' and too 'Wild' for the market, he wanted to generate ATTENTION to the system. Guess that worked! :)

The major question here is, if you throw it. Does it come back to you?

This makes me wonder what happened to the E3 2005 display consoles too:

It was so awesomely over-engineered. It's kind of a shame that they lost the money they did developing the PS3 with so many features, only to spend even more money on taking them out and re-marketing/re-branding/whoring out the PS logo. I had a 60GB PS3 for awhile and was spoiled by it. The later models seem kind of disappointing (albeit more reliable) and as more features are removed the system gets uglier and uglier (looking at you, Super Slim).

On another note, I wonder if there are any working 20GB PS3s out there that lack the HDMI port. Initially, it was announced that they were going to ship without HDMI, but they made a last minute decision to include it with the 20GB right before launch.

I don't know but I do know that the first PS3 Tool's do indeed have two HDMI ports and 3 Ethernet ports for the hardware. And the supposedly work on real early versions (pre 1.00) of the firmware.

They probably never made a 20GB model without HDMI, nor a PS3 motherboard without HDMI. The reason they changed it at the last moment is they probably realized that it's cheaper to be producing one type of motherboard instead of two, especially when the Cell BE and such were costing so much. (The WiFi module is a separate card, that is part of the card reader module IIRC)

I just remember this picture IGN had from many years ago, but I guess there's always the chance it could be a mockup. *shrugs*

They also could have just done it the easy way (aka not soldering the port to contacts that are still present on the mobo and hiding it with plastic). At least, that's what Nintendo did with the non-BC Wii.
