Was there ever a PSX CD-Writer?

I'm a n00b when it comes to certain gaming development hardware. :D

I know that copied playstation discs would not work on a regular PSX, so did the PSX developers ever have their own specialized CD burners that burned playstation discs to work on a PSX, or the media they used enabled that, or both?!

I have no earthly idea if the PSX debugging set also does this...

Certain cd writers were supplied with sony firmware for burining PSX disc. I have one of the writers from interplay and compared to todays external cd writers it is big 2' X 2' roughly. it takes up the top of my file cabinet.

It is worth noting (just so there is no confusion) that there is NO burner that can burn a CD-R that will work on a retail PlayStation.

Then how is it that PSX games can be copied, but cannot work copied? Is it a different type of media that can be read on a CD-ROM & PSX?

  7. ...Just like many consoles the Retail PSX reads 'pressed' CD(ROM's), not CD-R's (-Recordable's), there's a big difference in the media.

  8. Here's a thread link to my site that you requested, although I don't actually have a PSX writer on there, sorry. (Basically it's as macwest described, nothing exciting I'm afraid)

if you head on cdfreaks you'll find a topic explaining the psx copy protection :) very long and interesting. it seems psx cds have some sort of "sony signal" in the pre-groove track in a place that normal burners can't write to... or something like that

Yes, and modchips supply that absent signal. I thought the "signal" (errorneous ECC pattern?) is throughout the entire disc?

actually it seems it is only in the start of it. so a cd burner ith a modified firmware could write a perfect cd if tehy'll manage to get the exact pattern from a original disc

Just curious, why do your pics have assemblergames.com labeled over it?

    Bingo :)

  18. I'm faily certain that the CDW-900E sold for $10,000 USD when it was released. Very expensive and heavy. It also burns all sorts of CD-R types too (I read about it somewhere).

I know the 900e was very expensive when new. Although the 921 assembler showed pictures of was very expensive new when new. Sony listed a few models which could burn gold masters.

Holy crap! $10,000?! That's more than my life's savings!

How much did you get that one for?! And how much are you ever willing to sell it? (Just curious, hehe)
