LOL, right now, I'm trying to get my hands on a Dreamcast Dev Kit Set 5.24 under $200 (To actually try & develop my own games :-D)...

    Maybe later...

I'd love to read it, but where? :p

And for those interested, the PSX sony signal actually says "SCEE", "SCEI" or "SCEA" (depending on the region) encoded in RS232 encoding. That's why region and copy protection are intertwined on the PSX.

Does anybody know how Xbox and PS2 copy protection works?

  5. I think we would all like to read it. IT would be nice if someone posted what it says. Thanks in advance!

My work has the top burner.

Like many systems. There were special versions of the Playstation made that could read cd-r media (made with the official burner or a rip with a regular burner). The two flavors I know of are the blue & teal/green test units.

The biggest use of the burner is that game submissions had to be submited on 10 special burned disc (they were master submission disc). So submission day was never fun (lots of burning and making sure what you started burning was 100% correct before the burn marathon).

  7. Which unit was that? How much was it originally? What company did you work for (or used thatif you can say)? Did you ever work on a PSX game that WAS released?

I dont know how much they paid for it. I would guess it's what sony asked for.

I wont mention the company (its just a small 3rd party studio).

Yes 3, all childrens games. :(

As for units do you mean test units? like this?

  9. 1.) Studio like Terra Glyph (of Blue's Clues Fame) or n-space (Rugrats fame)?

2.) What unit is the one in the picture (the cd-burner). I forget the model numbers.

3.) Approx how much would Sony ask for the burner when it was brand new in the hey day?

    Just curious.

    1) Neither. We've done mix software for all platforms for big publishers like ubi-soft, konami & others. I've just personaly found my self on more childrens games then anything else.

    2) I have no clue. the unit is boxed in storage somewhere since we have not done any ps1 stuff in a long time.

    3) I really have no clue since it was bought before I worked for the company (only been here for 3 years).

    It's on the box. It's a SONY CDU921S.

Sony didn't sell them directly to developers, they were just off the shelf CD writers but their burning software only supported a couple of drives. They were sold through normal distribution channels. (At least when my company bought it). They became very difficult to got hold of and were well sought after on EBay. We mangaged to get one from a US company. It cost around £900 excluding shipping. (Around $1500). This is at a time where CD writers were selling for around £100 here.

    backups are easy

playing backups on the psx is super easy. Boot into gameshark (i used the disc that came with my ps2 gameshark) then push down the little button that tells the console that the lid is open, so it wont know the lid was ever opened, swap discs, from the gameshark one to the burned game (i used a special disc with a black bottom, i dont know if it was necessary, but it was standard cd-r and i burned it with a generic drive) then go to load game without cheats in gameshark. It is incredibly easy, but you have to make sure not to release the little button thing. I think here is a method similar to this for ps2, but you have to either take off the disc cover on the ig ones, of find the little button on the slim one.

Now i have a question. I got a sony cdw-900e from work, it was old and trash, but it looks great and afaik it still works, but i havent been able to try it. What software do you use to burn discs with this burner?

    thanks,
    andy

We're talking about master discs, the mastering process.

There's basically a tool that burns the cdr a certain way, which I'm not going to put up or post as sony would probably go apeshit.
