:smt023 someone got it MS have IMHO got the jump on Sony with the hype already and actually seeing something for real. Reallly they have to be so close spec wise as there can`t really be a jump that big in graphic output etc that one will kick the others RS!!!!!
I think that the PS2 is just rated for the wrong reasons. It's the most popular console (here in europe) and that's probably because of all the franchise games. Most people who own a PS2 probably also own GTA and some FIFA games. Looking at it from that perspective it's totally over rated and offers nothing other consoles don't. But if you look at it in terms of its quality games it's quite underrated. Though the PS2 probably has more crap games than either the GC or the xbox but I'd say it also has at least as many quality games as the GC, and more than the xbox.
I agree with both. PS2 has a pretty good library and it's probably the best one this generation - what, with Breath of Fire V alone, it's worth the purchase - but then there's also the Ace Combat games, Silpheed (which is, indeed, more than decent), Gradius V, R-Type Final, Arc the Lad and ZOE2. However, it lacks that... charm that the PSX had, especially in terms of RPGs and creative old school action. It's probably more a sign of the times that the system itself, but it can be overrated for sure. And, by the way, shouldn't they have cut the X in half horizontally? then they could spell "LOVE"!
Perhaps this Welcome Change Thing means they're gonna change the god-awful controller. Or perhaps I can only dream...
I'm not protecting sony if that's what you think. I also make fun of Sony and the PS2 sometimes, specially about the build quality. Yes the build quality of the system is terrible, no doubts about that. But the system have lots of great games, like any other system. I know the PS2 is over rated, specially with games like the GTA series. But calling some mediocre just because you don't like is pure idiocy. I don't like the Xbox (although i liked the Xbox360). I only like 5 or 6 games of the Xbox, but i don't call it mediocre because of that. Anyway, i'm gonna stop here, before this thread ends up in a system war.
Pftt you are all n00bs. PS2 is horrible. Dreamcast rules all! Though I do have a strong bias towards xbox...
After the Dreamcast died, the Japanese PS2 went from the worst console, to the best, very fast. It's the only of the three current systems that can display true low res, so for all these companies putting out retro games, the look like steaming caca on the other two.... not to mention the PS2 has WAY more of them. All the shooters are coming out on the PS2 as well, and we won't even get started on RPGs. Is there a lot of shit games? Absolutely, but there are on my beloved Saturn and DC too, so that's not really fair to hold it against Sony. The biggest problem I think is no progressive scan for current games. The US side of things is a different story. Their no 2D policy I think has kept quite a few games from going overseas.
By whom? Anyway, when the hell will they change the PS font? It wasn't cool when it first came out and now it seems to be carrying on to the next gen :-(
I dunno why, but I like most of the Sony RPGs except a few. They are the only console in this day and age that still makes 2d rpgs, Imo. And those are some of my favorites! Besides that the GBA makes a lot of 2d rpgs, too, but it isnt a console and a lot of them are ports of Snes and Genesis games. I really need to get a Dreamcast, though. I bet im missing out on something without it. I would like the PS2 library so much more if the U.S. policy was loosened. They learned their mistake from Metal Slug 3 not being on the ps2 and are releasing 4 and 5 on it. Perhaps they will smarten up more. BTW, I thought this was supposed to be a site dedicated to the rare and hardcore, not calling Ps2 Shit or any other system for that matter. 99% of you guys never go into great detail of why you hate *System name here*, anyway. You just try to force your opinions on everyone else. Come on, lets not spam each other to death in this system-hating flamewar.
I could never HATE any videogame system. I love videogames too much to do that. But I can say for sure that the PS2 is not impressive librarywise. Neither is the Xbox or the Gamecube, though. All 3 have great games and great characteristics, but this generation has no clear winner. It's good because there's a lot to choose from, but that's also bad because you don't get to have ALL the cool games unless you get all three consoles. It's just a sign of the times, I guess. Marketers in the US being against 2D, we could see that back in the Saturn and PSX era. Not the system's fault. Stupid, greedy and narrowminded superficial pricks are to blame. The danger lies in them taking over the industry. And Mr. Casual, MAN you're missing out. I used to not have any faith in Sega whatsoever (the gaming press in Mexico during the 90s did, after all, consist of only a Nintendo-propaganda pseudo-magazine thing) - but in that weird lull between the last breath of the PSX and the unimpressive PS2 launch, I started hearing about this "Dreamcast" thing that was supposedly pretty cool. Some years later, being pretty tired of Devil May Cry, I had cash but wasn't really interested in getting any other PS2 game. So I went and bought that Sega thing and, dude, I was in for a GREAT surprise. Really hard to get games _legitimately_ for the thing nowadays, but if you're willing to deal with some haggling (and other less legitimate actions), you'll get to sample pure gaming bliss.
