It'd be integrated into games in ways that kill the entertainment value just like every other peripheral that hasn't been fully fleshed out. I'd rather see memory cards that aren't jokes in terms of how much capacity they have myself. Not like USB memory sticks are 512mb and 1gb at MOST anymore but Microsoft finds it amusing to limit you to 16gb USB partitions.
Still, I think Sega had plans to make a VMU that would not only connect to your game console but also be a media player. Of small capacity, of course, but that was technology back then. Today, I'd like to see a smaller touchscreen like device with some capabilities when separated form the console. (minigames, music, photos, the usual, maybe wifi) I think this has just inspired me to go make a mock-up Dreamcast 2. And Aleff, I think we should get a crash sometime soon. It hasn't completely "bottomed out" so to say, but it's getting there fast (in my opinion). EDIT- YES! 50 POSTS! To the marketplace!
They did have the idea of making a VMU work as an MP3 player but beyond that I can't think of any reason to suspect that. Honestly the limited size of the VMU was a problem and unless they had a trick up their sleeve to increase it without banking with a switch...meh. Plus the iPod appeared and decimated that concept (released in 2001...shortly after the DC's demise). Personally I don't think we're in for a crash but I think we are ready for a leveling off and sharp decline in certain areas. Rhythm games did this not too long ago with only the diehards still actively purchasing them. I'm hoping we will see this with FPS titles given that CoD has made a mockery of it all and EA has successfully corn holed many gamers with the BF franchise (myself included; it hurt). We won't be seeing anything nearly as bad as the crash that Atari helped instigate.
I'd love to see the FPS area crash. Although I do play BF3 myself, I'd much rather see the demise of the COD franchise. Maybe then they'd make games actually worthwhile to the preteen market? Plus if it's worthwhile then the expected age range can be expanded. COD's buyers are within a pretty specific range, and they do a good job at marketing it to them. However, and for whatever reason, there's always that odd 40 year old playing COD like it's the best thing ever. Also the VMU had some pretty cool abilities back then, like a really simple FPS. Would've been nice for some variation of a Mario Bros style game or maybe Sonic. If they had released a second Dreamcast, right in 2006 or so, the iPod wouldn't kill the VMU/media device- I'm sure if they released a media device they'd add games built in, something the iPod did NOT do very well.
The FPS has had it's time. Sometime sooner or later another game will rise up and that will become the next Oversaturated game Genre. It's the way it's always been really. Like a Trend.
One could say it's like the general populaces' interest in clothes and material possessions- it's always changing. We used to be into bell bottoms and afros, and now *most* people are wearing expensive ripped clothes, tight jeans, huge redundant glasses and growing beards.
I still like Bell bottoms personally haha. They are hard to find these days though. But yes, its just as you said. There was once a time when they were the "in" thing.
1983? This sounds more like 1984. I honestly now believe that piracy is the only thing that will save classic games from extinction. If they kill the second hand market, chances are you won't be able to buy older games in the future. Some AAA-titles will probably get a re-release sometime, like we've seen what happened to Halo and some classic games available on Xbox Live, PSN Store, etc, but what of the thousand games for each system that probably won't garner as much revenue?
Kotaku... Hmm, always a good laugh I guess. Do they really have to shit in their hands and type afterwards for articles?! REALLY? Is there any OTHER, CONFIRMED, REAL stories to release? I can't believe such stupidity that comes from their articles, I always correct or stomp on them in their facebook posts. Nothing but BS that comes from them, especially about next gens.
When talking about the state of gaming the Bob Marley Song Natural Mystic comes to mind. Things are not the way they used to be, I won't tell no lie; One and all have to face reality now. 'Though I've tried to find the answer to all the questions they ask. 'Though I know it's impossible to go livin' through the past - Don't tell no lie. AND THAT is the current state of gaming. Vox Games (who also reported this as coming form Kotaku) Posted this article. http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/23/2896935/is-the-gaming-media-broken Actually it was a user but it does make a good point. Considering how Kotaku has become a joke. One last thoughtt, Remember Spong? I think Kotaku has taken their place as the main Bullshit mongerers.
What I call bullshit on is the PS4 using X86. PPC is still good enough, and if any architecture should be considered thats ARM: Krait cores kick major ass even with the energy limitations of phones But X86? and AMD? unless Jesus comes back with Piledriver in his hands its not gonna be that much of an improvement over bulldozer, not enough to beat Ivy bridge. The PS4 will probably use a more traditional PPC, probably a quad or even a hexacore, so programmers wont want to kill themselves like with CELL And DefectX11 that VMU2 you talk about sounds a lot like the WiiU, and is not that cool really... And FPS crashing? the genre is more powerful now than ever before, specially now with FPSRPGs like the new Fallouts and Skyrim, those games are INSANELY popular
Didn't cell have 9 cores? I recall reading that somewhere. Or it was 9 *something-like-a-core*'s The WiiU has the touchscreen built in- it would be nice to be able to pull out an iPod touch like device, that's small enough to carry around and is relatively cheap to produce. That contabla-troller is big, and they won't sell them separately at launch- Seems like they cost a lot. But let's hope the PS4 follows after the WiiU, but with more capable hardware. The WiiU will be running a modified Power7 processor, which is extremely powerful. I also recall something about a modified AMD 6000 series card. From those specs along, and the fact that it's going to need to run 5 displays at once means it's hardware will be powerful. I hope the PS4 will do the same, but use, say, a modified 7000 series card with the 22nm die. Or maybe they'll go wit Nvidia and their new 600 line (which is superior to the 7000 series) And I do recall the launch of Skyrim. It looked like a geek's game, but everyone was playing it.
Preach it brother !!!! Skyrim sold because they spent a ton on marketing it, something they never really did before with The Elder Scrolls series. They marketed console owners vs the fans so to speak, fans will buy no matter what, but getting buddy who buys Madden every year to pony up ... that takes exposure and that costs money.
The hilarious part is how Skyrim can't compete with half the modded content of Morrowind much less Oblivion. Plus, what's with their QA? Really, the very first thing any real insane gamer's going to do is think of exploits that could potentially break the game. Like falling down a mountain into a river and surviving, or launching a horse off the side of a mountain they never assumed you'd climb with a horse, or ninja kniving a dragon and killing it one-hit. Anything worked out in the first few days of release using obviously-exploitable glitches makes you wonder. Again though, their focus was less on story like Daggerfall or Morrowind and more on action. Look at how many people only bought the game for modding purposes. Story takes time. Kill animations not so much. Oblivion was the same thing. Cathedrals to the imperial cult populated by nobody? Nobody has an opinion of it? Pretty yes, but populated--no. Story is not "I am farmer's son who you killed I am back for revenge prepare to get randomly jacked while you sleep and easily defeat me."
I can tell you what I know from a friend at a dev house that has early favored status (but no kits yet) All games will register to psn and second hand sale games will not have key features of the game such as online play or come content. You will have to pay $10-15 to unlock it again. Unless people raise hell this is what will happen.
Is this pulled out of ass or fact? I don't even know anymore, After I made a bunch of shit up about the next XBOX only to see it on Kotaku a month later I don't know anymore.
Yes... Elder Scrolls certainly took a turn for the worse after Morrowind. Morrowind was just an incredibly crafted world that had a deep story. Then we got, "Go to x towns and close the portal!!! HAI!" I don't know why Bethesda went all retarded.
Well, It seems that sticking to Nintendo all these years is still serving me well against all of these terrible rumours. The only console manufacturer that is still reliable IMHO. Sure, it doesn't have the blockbuster games but as far as everything else (BC, design, innovation, ease of use, second hand, etc) they are doing pretty amazingly in my eyes. For graphics-intensive stuff I'll just stick to my PC thanks
They don't have that many good games, but other than that, I sure like these things that are supposed to play games!
Nintendo has been steadily releasing consoles that, although having less games than the competition, It's a hit with the younger kids. Good thing about that is if the game is actually not crap, and worth while to play (Kirby Air Ride anyone?) then these kids will grow up, but still continue to play those games. Nintendo also seems to be able to put a lasting impression with their games. Mario is now a character known to just about everyone in the world. Lots of people know Kirby, etc. I've got high hopes for the WiiU. It had better be good, because I'm planning to buy at launch.
