HDMI out, plays NES,SNES,Genesis AND GBA Bluetooth Controllers INTERESTING but I'm still not getting this inliu of the actual hardware. http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/05/retron-4-console-plays-nes-snes-genesis-gba-over-hdmi/ Seeing as it's hyper kin, Sound will be off and Compatability will suck
HDMI out on a classic console with no quality up-scan will still look shit. You need the scan lines for it to look like it should via HDMI. What this system will produce is the sort of image an emulator gives on a PC with no filters being used. Plus add the system on a chip are still crap. Why can't they produce a 100% working clone like the good old real clone systems?
Yeah I'm curious as to if this will have scanline options. Compatibility however is my #1 concern. Hyperkin gets SNES right...but everything else they have failed...HARD.
What about Castlevania 3 test? It's still junk if it won't play a few NES games or if the sound still sounded off.
It's more than just Scanlines though. CRTs have a shadow mask, aperture grill, phosphors, etc that all contribute to the way games looked on those TVs.
The Framemeister does a very good job at giving that classic high quality CRT image if you use the Meister mode. I'm guessing that mode was made with gamers in mind. I was playing Batman Returns and Dead Dance (Tuff Enough) on the SFC through it yesterday. The games honestly looked like they did way back in the 90's on my 32inch Toshiba TV. I couldn't be more happy. I'm just waiting for my copy of Super Aleste to turn up. That is one hell of a great shooter.
Agreed. I really want an 'enhanced' N64 - to me, SNES, Megadrive, MAME, etc emulation on the PC or modded XBox 1 are good enough so that I don't need a console for those machines, but sadly N64 emulation is still far from perfect, so I have to use the original N64. Not that I mind using a real console, but the genuine N64 looks rough on my TV, and lacks the advantages of emulators, so I'd love to see a 'deluxe' console, that makes the N64 look good on modern TVs, plus ideally has things like Gameshark supports and snapshot load/saving built in. I don't know any of the technicalities that Yakumo and others discuss, and even if what I want (am dreaming about :sorrow is possible then it's probably too niche a market to make it financially viable, but it would be great. Oh well, in time there'll be a 100% accurate emulator, no doubt (MESS is the only one I know of that's still in active development, and is the only one aiming for cycle accurate emulation of every operation, but so far it's very slow and very incomplete) for the PC, but a sort of super-N64, with better picture quality, and other hardware enhancements would be great too.
I have seen pretty much every console every through HDMI with Various scanlines through my laptop. So I know what to expect. I've seen N64 upscaled through an emulator and I've seen the same game though Composite on a real N64...hardly see much of a difference.
The scan lines on emulators are not the same as scan lines on an up-scan box. SFC games on real hardware through RGB to the Framemeister to the TV via HDMI look much better than the same game running on my PC on the same big HD screen through HDMI. There's a warmness missing from the emulation that you get with real hardware.
Well, PJ 64 1.6 is pretty damn close to perfect with the right plugins for video and controllers. I wish 1.7 development would be constant.
The Best options are with MEME There's one filter that simulates a burnt in monitor. Most NES Emulators I've used have shit for Filters, ZSNES has terrible scanlines, Fusion is ok, and Magic Engine is on Par with Fusion just OK. The best picture I get is no filters through my CRT HD set.
believe it or not... a lot of people LIKE that smooth, pixelated look on their old games. To them that represents a more pure experience than scan lines. different strokes, different folks
I'm not a big fan of those semi-hardware ARM-based emulators. What's the point of lame attempts to run original cartridges when sound quality makes me think that those things were designed on purpose of destroying your ears? Not to mention crappy compatibility. Atom/E-xxx-based nettop running lightweight linux distro with pack of emulators will blow that crap away.
I am actually interested in this one because of the hdmi out and gba support, but will have to wait and see how well those are. Reason why alot of people are interested in hdmi out is cause of sync issues. There are a lot of hd tvs that are very picky about the video signal they get from a system. I know on my sharp aquas there is a slight delay before the picture will display. Kinda annoying when you want see the opening screen. Gba support I would like cause I want get rid of my ds lite and just play gba games on tv. Reviews I read for retron 3 were good and s-video support was pretty close to s-video modded genesis. As usual though nes side was a mixed bag. I myself would love to get a framiester and rgb cables for all my classic consoles, but it's way out of my price range at close to $500 U.S. I will admit though yakumo on your new videos it captures the scale well, never knew how well rgb genesis looked(stuck with U.S. best s-video).
