Everyone always defends the saturn from criticism saying it was primarily designed to be a 2d power house etc etc There are tons of lists of the best Saturn 2d shmups and 2d fighters... Well, I just bought a saturn and I'm more in the mood to play old 3D games than old 2d ones right now. What are some I should look into? Especially if they are a little outside the beaten path of well known 1st party titles such as Virtua Fighter 2 or Sonic R or Nights or Sega Rally. What is a 3d game with fun/good gameplay? What are 3d games that display the best 3d capabilities of the saturn? Are there any titles that fit in both of these categories? -Steep Slope Sliders looks pretty good for the system and the time it was released.
Decathlete/Athlete Kings and Winter Heat, both of which run in the Saturn's hi-res mode and look gorgeous, as well as being fun to play. Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka
I enjoyed Resident Evil on the SS. Still playing through these games but Deep Fear, Tomb Raider and Soviet Strike are pretty good as well. A little bit inferior 3D wise when compared to the PS1 version (with the exception being Deep Fear) but still pretty neat to play on an SS. Think I'll keep an eye on this thread since my SS collection is a bit slim.
Panzer Dragoon Zwei (2) Panzer Dragoon Azel/saga/rpg Zero Divide (looks better than Sega's 3D fighters and plus like them) Anarchy in the Nippon Dead or Alive Thunder Force 5 (many bang on about the Playstation having better textures but they never tell you that the Saturn has cleaner backgrounds, better and more transparency effects and plays faster) Exhumed / Power Slave Quake Nippon maru (or something like that) Deep fear (like bio hazard) Virtua wrestling Shutokou Battle (Tokyo highway battle) this looks fantastic for its time. There's loads more too. The best thing about Saturn 3D is that in general it's more solid looking due the Saturn not having issues with bendy texture drawing unlike many Playstation games.
My comps broken am here on a now badly outdated phone lol ! But 3Dish games not listed here that I like are virtua racing, duke nukem 3D,wipeout,virtua cop 1 &2,fighters megamix, house of the dead, the virtua fighters, virtual on ,firestorm thunderhawk 2,Manx tt superbikes, fighting vipers ,last Bronx and need for speed
Alien Trilogy, Hexen, Tunnel B1, like football games? Fifa 97 and Fifa 98 at least one of these has the cool indoor football mode which is great fun 2 player, and of course the others mentioned above, clockwork knight is kind of 3d in a 2d platformer kinda way, there's also Crypt Killer(lightgun shooter) Hang On GP 96, Hardcore 4x4 and Demolition Derby, im playing "Loaded" right now which is a 3D top down Shooter that's pretty cool, then there's Sega Touring Car Championship and Battle Arena Toshinden Remix
Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition - Very enjoyable Sega Rally - Small game but surprisingly addictive! Panzer Dragoon Saga - Really enjoyed this one, still haven't finished it though as it's quite a meaty game Clock work knight - Decent platformer, does get old fairly quickly Radient Silver Gun - One of the most enjoyable games I've played on any platform, by far my favourite Saturn game! I know it's not technically a 3D game as it's a rail shooter but it features 3D graphics (some of the best I've seen on Saturn as well), and has endless replay ability. The disc is basically permanently in my Saturn. Nights into Dreams - Didn't get what all the fuss was about, enjoyed it somewhat but still don't really get peoples fascination with it really, worth a look.
They also forget to mention that entire backgrounds go missing (the city level with the nice parallax effect, in the PS1 version it's just black space and not a city in the background). Anyways, the stuff by Sega is generally very good (PD Trilogy, Burning Rangers, NiGHTS). One that I didn't see (and may have missed) already mentioned was Dark Savior. Kind of a mix of 2D/3D, but it's always been one of my favorites. Some nice isometric platforming if you're into that, and an interesting plot with 4 alternate plotlines.
I'm playing the PS1 Thunder force V now. Which is fine for being "So inferior" The translation notes mentioned something about the Saturn version having slow down problems. This true?
I really appreciate this aspect. No one seemed to talk about it back in the day, but I noticed it with psx games and it was refreshing not to have that issue when I upgraded from psx to dreamcast. How is Stellar Assault? It looks pretty cool in videos and seems to have a great framerate.
Yeah the PS1 version which I've probably logged about an hour into so far is smooth. Then again I can't clear more than 1 stage.
I have a real soft spot for Sonic R. The PC port is awful but I really love the original. Once you get really good at handling the awful controls it's a pretty sweet game.
Stellar Assault is an amazing game if you like space shooters. I am actually about to sell a 100% mint copy of that game complete with sticker too! Won't be cheap mind you.
