What are some games that got poor reviews and are still worth playing? Is funny but if a game gets anywhere below 8 its already slightly doomed. You have blockbusters with a 20% rating and yet people still go to see them, same with terrible shitty music, but they don't give a shit about what critics say, but gamers do, too much even. I have played great games that later on I found got as little as 4 in many reviews and loved every minute so I can't avoid thinking I might be missing out on other games I ignored because critics didn't like them so post away.
Alpha Protocol. I'll never understand how this was panned yet that piece of shit Dead Rising got nothing but praise.
Mirror's Edge is all I can think of right now... Think many reviewers wanted it to be an FPS and not a platformer.
GunValkyrie comes to mind. It was a great game if you knew how to play it, unfortunately most game reviewers aren't "hardcore gamers", so they never figured it out. I remember Giga Wing getting panned for "only being 40 minutes long" as well. It's like, "Wow... really?"
ODCM gave Gunbird 2 a 1 out of 10 or something Near the end of the Dreamcast's life ODCM was panning EVERYTHING for the Dreamcast.
Lost Planet Lost Planet 2 Torneko The Last Hope Bionic Commando (2010 Reboot. Yeah sue me) Dark Void Final Fantasy XIII ( Again, sue me.) Serious Sam 2 Ace Combat Assault Horizon.(For what it is. It is a good game. It's a spin-off and not AC7 like many had hoped) Alpha Protocol Binary Domain Dark Sector Dead Rising 2 Resident Evil 5/6 (Once more sue me) Resident Evil Code Veronica X HD. (Far superior to RE4 HD yet got poorer reviews. lolwut) Doom 3 (Imo better than D1&2 in everyway except in MP) Duke Nukem Forever. (If you are a Duke fan and not just a Duke 3D fan, because really there has only been 1 Duke FPS prior to DNF;. You will enjoy it despite some flaws. It's no where near the 1.0 many gave it. It's more like a 6/7 at WORST.) Front Mission Evolved Kane And Lynch 2 The Last Remnant RAGE Most Dynasty Warriors games.(I only say this one because it gets derrided for not changing a ton. Yet CoD does the same thing and gets off scott free.) Zombi U (Because most reviewers are retarded) Drakengard Neir Ehrgiez Shiren The Wanderer 1 Front Mission 1 DS Front Mission 4 (Because westerners first was 3 and 3 is technically the black sheep of the Stategy FM games with simpler combat and less reliance on teamwork and large scale battles. Unlike 4 despite it's issues is a return to form from 1&2) Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter Metal Gear Ac!D 1&2 These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter! That game is a jewel! It's one of the best RPGs ever made. The battle system and the music are fantastic, beyond most releases of the time. And yet, the same crowd who would later disown the typical JRPG because it was "Generic" panned the most innovative JRPG in ages because it was too difficult. About FF13... I think if it had had a different name, people would have said something among the lines of "Wow! A great, innovative, very different Square Enix game! Why do they not make the newer Final Fantasy like these?" or some similar crap.
Didn't FF13 get primarily good reviews from the majority of the gaming press? Looking at it's metacritic "professional" review page it only received 13 reviews that were less than 80%, but received 70 reviews that were more than 80%.
Shiren the Wanderer on the Nintendo DS got mediocre reviews despite being an incredible game. It was definitely one of the reasons (along with the horrible box art) that it didn't sell enough to get the sequels released in the US.
Agree on both terms. And on FFXIII there are a lot of misconceptions and things that are completely wrong with how people judge it. Like Linearity. FF has never been Non-linear to the point of being able to do whatever you want right away. You are almost always guided along an illusionary path until you are allowed to do more (IE: Explore, side quests, etc). And you can do more as it goes on. The only TRUE non-linear game in the series (Like people seem to expect) is X-2(I have not played XIII-2 yet. So can't say about that And not counting XI/XIV). XII and II get up there though. But wait, all 3 of these are some of the most contested games in the entire series. And no one harps on X's Linearity(Which is just as much if not more linear than XIII in many aspects.). So what's the deal? People have insanely wrong perceptions of how things used to be and ACTUALLY are. Like the Perception that Squaresoft was some patron saint that could make no mistakes and was never shallow or anything. And that Square Enix is TEH EVIL who only cares about flashy graphics and milking ports/remakes, tosses everything else to the side and can only do wrong and no good! Yeah Squaresoft NEVER made any mistakes, never treated Westerners like we were too stupid to be able to enjoy RPGs(let alone hard ones), released crappy games, or milked games via lots of ports and remakes,or a movie that was a critical and commercial failure to fans and critics alike. Or released lots of spinoffs of varying quality. Checklist! Treated Westerners like we were stupid, or noobs: FFIV Easy Type, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (AKA FFUSA),didn't release FFV at all because they thought we couldn't handle a hard RPG. Not releasing games here at all. Dumb Decisions/complete mishandling: Giving us the dumbed down Front Mission 3 first instead of FM1 or 2 which would ensure FM4 be a complete commercial failure because it's more like the latter than the former. Translations for pretty much EVERY game they released in the west. Radical Dreamers a JP Satellaview only text adventure sequel to Chrono Trigger. Front Mission 2's original release with it's insanely terrible loading times. FFVIII in the west still having Chocobo World or prompts for Pocketstation but we had no pocketstation. Calling Saga and Mana games FF games. Shit games: Chocobo Racing,Racing Lagoon,Driving Emotion Type-S,Sokaigi (According to Gamespot), Ehrgiez (According to many at the time ;I disagree), Final Fantasy II/VIII (Which were hated by many for years as the black sheep of the main series. Personally I don't think either game is shit. But according to many Sound familiar eh?) All Star Pro-Wresting (According to IGN; Gamespot and others at the time) The Bouncer (According to Critics and players alike Not an opinion I share) , Saga 1(FFLegend) (According to critics Not an opinion I share) , Unlimited Saga, which was developed and published while still Square in Japan (According to just about everybody) Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and FFX-2 -also both developed and published as Square in Japan before they became Square Enix (According to many players and critics alike;FFTA;X-2; Not an opinion I share) Chrono Cross (According to many players as a crap game compared to Trigger and an unworthy successor. An opinion I do not share. ) Milking and porting: 4+ Re-releases of FFI&II before they became Square Enix, the Poor PSX ports of IV-VI,Wonderswan port of Front Mission(which is not a great port), PSX port of Chrono Trigger, Wonderswan port of FFIV (3 was also planned), SAGA 1 on Wonderswan AKA FFLegend Spinoffs of varying quality:Chocobo games(Chocobo's Dungeon,Racing, GBA/WSC games),Radical Dreamers,Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals, Final Fantasy Unlimited,Final Fantasy Legend series(Saga), Mystic Quest,FFAdventure (Mana 1),Legend of mana,Front Mission Gun Hazard, Front Mission Alternative,Final Fantasy Tactics Advance(Again A Square Developed and published game),Vagrant Story and Secret of Evermore. Critical and Commercial failure : Final Fantasy Spirits Within (Where as Square Enix has a Critically and commercially successful film. Advent Children) In Reality Square Enix is no different than how Squaresoft was(In fact more successful in many ways when you consider their aquisitions of companies like Taito and Eidos expanding their portfolio even more). People are just jaded and blinded by nostalgia. Every main FF game still tries to do different or new things, just as they always have. They still make spin-offs of varying quality. They still milk the porting/remake train(With or without proper effort just as before. Though FFX/X-2HD is seeming to be a VERY Proper effort:Note the labeling is reversed), still occasionally make dumb decisions and still sometimes make shit games.(Such as this) Look at player reviews and there are many critic reviews that are poor as well.
Again, mostly positive from critics. There are numerous negative reviews from players, but I thought this thread was about good games that were panned by critics, not good games that were bashed by gamers.
Wasn't much for Dark Void but I think Bionic Commando was awesome, despite being fairly basic. I am not sure of any games to add to this list though (should probably actually look to what mag reviewers say for once)
Any game that the developers didn't pay IGN for a good review. There was some game that came out right around COD modern warfare 2 that scored extremely low compared to other sites, while COD got a 9.something.
I'd actually like to see that. I'm sure you're right, but it would be an interesting social experiment to see how much of a fuck those kids give to reviews compared to the title of the game.
World Racing 1 didn't get too many good reviews. Granted, the cars handled like tanks and the rain effects were hilariously bad, but overall the game had a unique atmosphere and really nice landscapes. It was also the first racing game in which you could just leave the course anytime you want - and explore a gigantic map, regardless of which race you selected. You could drive up a ski jump ramp like in the infamous Audi commercial, jump off the Hoover dam, find aliens and enjoy brilliant sceneries with amazing vision. I don't think the game deserved all the hate and I'd give it a solid 4/5 or 8/10. It's not as bad as some people made it to be and nowadays it's often just called 'trash' by those young YouTube bastards. It was a good game at its for christs sake! They just rushed development towards the end, so some parts seem a bit unfinished...
