It's not better or much worse, it's a different game - more of first person survival horror game, than your typical shoot-everything-that-moves FPS, like Wolf3D, Doom, Duke3D,Quake etc. Also Doom 3 is way too dark. There's not even a single shit game, actually most of them are good games.
Since when did that get poor reviews? The average is like 80%, although everything over 0% is too much for a Dead Rising game. Forgot about Binary Domain though, that game was sweet.
There can't be anything "wrong" with how somebody judges something. It's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't know about that. You must admit, the post-SquareSoft Final Fantasy franchise has gone a long way to make Final Fantasy attractive to new players. The things they felt they had to do was always going to draw the ire of the grey-beard FF players. For example, in FF13/13-2, taking away the character micro-management from battles, going with a teeny-pop vibe for the soundtrack over the more classical Nobuo Uematsu compositions, making the characters more peppy and likeable, etc. They aren't automatically bad things in isolation, and you can argue both ways until the cows come home, but I don't think you can totally blame the long-time die-hard fans for being just a little resentful of the post-Squaresoft culture. My personal gripe with FF13 and 13-2 is that they've felt the need to make every single dialogue sequence deeply profound, no matter how incidental the content is. Nearly every conversation is "bla bla bla the darkness bla bla those with courage bla bla bla into the light bla bla bla". It makes the whole thing feel very contrived. That's just my taste though, it doesn't make it a "bad awful terrible game". It's just something different. It's definitely a different Squaresoft if you ask me. But it's not different for the sake of being different and pissing on the fans, it's so that Squaresoft can survive. You can't survive and continue to make games if nobody buys them.
It's funny, as someone who grew up playing the original Final Fantasy games you've pretty much described how I felt/feel about Final Fantasy VII on.
Over G Fighters, Xbox 360 Okay, the music was crap and the Simulation aspect made it 'boring' for some, but I found it very satisfying shooting an enemy down without 200 Missiles and planes that can pull 20G turns. I found that it was the right balance between Arcade and Simulation- more to the Sim side, but it made it more interesting that way. It scored around a 6.5/7, I'd give it around a 7.8-8.0 - not much of an increase, but it really depends on your enthusiasm for flying games.
I actually really enjoyed Grabbed By The Ghoulies. A -lot-. My group of friends began watching me play it semi-daily and it became part of our thing until I eventually beat it a few weeks later. I even loved the music of the game. Years later, in a funk, I reached out through the Contact Us on the website and actually heard back from Rare's PR team! It took a while and the hours were off since I'm in New Jersey and they're in the UK but whatever I was stoked. They were blown away to read that I wanted to get a character tattooed on me and the artists did a specific pose for me. I couldn't really be much happier with it and all that it means to me. Your gold, may not be mine, and vice versa. The game just made me happy.
Gamecube Mario Kart Double Dash that Edge rated at 5 I reckon. It's a game that you couldn't pick up and love as quickly as the other MK titles, but once you spent a bit of time with it, was a proper gem

I don't know what kind of specific reviews Turbografx 16 games ever got, but I find it sad that if you ever look up a top 100 games of all time list from a major gaming site or source that claims to allow all games from all systems as contenders for the list, you will NEVER see any Turbografx 16 game on the list. Quite frankly, I think Bonk had much better games and was a much better mascot than Sonic the Hedgehog, and you will always find Sonic games on said lists.
I'd say Resident Evil Code Veronica gets a bad rap. I really enjoy it and have it in my top two maybe three Resident Evil games.
