Exactly what the title says, this of course excludes the common modes like team deathmatch and Capture the flag.

For me the the multiplayer modes that you don't see often are those "paint the level" type modes like in Tony Hawk Pro skater 2 and the Blob (2?). While not really a mode as much as a multiplayer minigame I have a soft spot for the Luigis mansion game in Nintendoland.

Can we count variants of common modes?

We used to play Hide and Seek in Halo, where one person would be the Juggernaut without camo, and everyone else would have camo all the time. The hiders would hide, and zoom in on something inconspicuous (the sky and walls were popular choices), while the Jug would seek.

My friend and I have a custom game mode in Halo (CE) that we like to play: we call it 2 Shot Pow. I'm not sure if we invented this or stole the idea from someone else. It's basically this: 2 players, a small map (usually Wizard), shotguns, very low health - such that you normally die from one or 2 shots. And you basically just run around the map and try to kill the other player before they kill you. We usually play to 50 points. It's very fast, and sometimes frustrating - but usually very fun. We've tried to replicate this in other versions of Halo, but it isn't really the same - it works best in Halo:CE.

Kula World (aka 'Roll Away') - Copycat mode can be surprisingly fun. For those that don't know it: you make a move, the second player repeats that and adds one move, you repeat the first two and add another, etc etc, until someone makes a mistake.

Sure we can, sounds like a fun mode. Sounds a bit like I did with friends back in the day with Goldeneye one person having the laser and the other nothing.

    So 2 player Simon?

It's got a bit more variety, but basically yes.

I always thought that the Race gamemode in Halo CE was kinda non-standard for a 1st person shooter. And to this day there are still people that play on dedicated Race servers where they do laps in the jeep and where shooting is strictly forbitten. No shooting allowed in a 1st person shooter xD

About half the built maps I remember seeing from Halo 3 were tracks. Some people made replicas of Mario Kart tracks even.

I forgot to mention - we also tried making a modified version of 2 Shot Pow with rocket launchers instead of shotguns. It was pretty ridiculous, and kind of funny. In the map we chose, almost every time you killed the other player, you would also die from the explosion. It was like some Cold War-style, mutually assured destruction type shit. If was fun just as a novelty, but not really playable.

My favourite unusual mode is the War: Colours mode from the N64 game, Conker's Bad Fur Day. It's a class based capture the flag game, which makes it sound like a thousand other games and mods, and it has fairly limited user definable options (it's just one game mode from the seven multiplayer modes that CBFD offers) which makes it sound even less interesting, I know. Oh, and it only has one map, and two character skins (one for each team) so it now sounds as interesting as Pong...

But it is fantastic!!! Really, really fantastic, and it's almost certainly the multiplayer game mode I've played the most, even though I've almost entirely only ever played it against the (very good) built in bots. The game is simply a third person shooting Capture the flag game, with the only unusual feature being that the weapon you carry decides your class. You can only carry one weapon, so when you pick up a weapon (which, as always, you do by walking into the weapon at it's spawn point) then whatever weapon you're carrying disappears and you gain the new weapon, and whatever effects the weapon has on you. For example, if you have the Katana (Japanese sword) then you can jump higher and don't appear on the enemies radar, if you have the Bazooka then you move really slowly, if you have the throwing knives, then you can still jump (move weapons prevent you from jumping), etc. You can 'holster' any weapon, which gives you back your speed and jumping ability, but then of course to fire you have to spend a second getting your weapon ready. And you always have infinite ammunition for any weapon, but some weapons need reloading after you've fired a certain amount of bullets.

I know, if doesn't sound like much. But the ability to choose your own 'class' via the weapon you carry is *fantastic*. Plus the one map you can play on is very well designed, the two sides are comical with some great animations (it's squirrels vs. Tediz - The Tediz are Nazi style Teddy bears, and if you headshot one, then it's head explodes, and padding shoots out of the neck, like a leaking Teddy bear), and the game is extremely addictive. I regularly put it on just to pass ten minutes, and could still be playing it two or three hours later, just me and the bots. That one mode is why CBFD is my third favourite game, after Perfect Dark and Goldeneye.

Team Fortress 2 - Play some old games (NES, Atari, etc)...
The owner of the server reversed-engineered the game and created special maps for "emulating" the games. Yes, there is 4-player Super Off Road, too.

Haven't played much CBFD but this sounds like a simpler version of Team Fortress.

I don't know how common it was, but I always liked The Man with the Golden Gun from Goldeneye 007.

    Rockets, just...rockets.

Play that in something small like Lockout and everyone dies all the time.

Trash Compactor in Halo 3. One person spawns with a hammer on top, they have a bunch of moveable (heavy) objects. Down into a hole where there's a ton of gravity lifts/man cannons that LAUNCH it down a small and cramped hall. You spawn there and try to NOT GET SQUISHED.
