And why? For me, I actually can tolerate most genres except Sports games and Racing titles. The only racing game series I've ever liked was Super Mario Kart, and the only Sports games I ever liked were the Mutant League games. As far as sports goes, I just don't like the genre because I don't really care for sports. I always thought actually playing Sports is a lot more fun. For racing games, most of them, to me, feel really repetitive. You go around the track in a slow crappy car, and with luck, get fast cars to go around the track faster. This could probably be twisted on every genre ever, but racing games are usually really linear, unless its like some weird non-linear track...I guess you'd only like them if you were a "Car" type of guy. But I'm not. I also hate most MMOs, but thats mainly because a lot of them are pay to play work + social interaction simulators. I played UO on a free shard, and while I got addicted for maybe a week, getting lost in the woods for 7 hours broke my addiction. It at least wasn't a Korean Grind fest, though.
Lets see, going down the list of Generes: -Sports (Madden, NBA, Tennis, etc): Hate them, never play them. Last sports game I ever had was Madden 02, and that was because I got it in a package deal with some other games. -Racing (Including cart racing): Depends. I hate racing most of the time with the more traditional racing games (Like GT and such), but I do enjoy Burnout and Mario Kart. -Alternate sports (BMX, Skateboarding): Tony Hawk was pretty fun up until Underground 2, and then everything went downhill. I tend to ignore these games most of the time. -JRPGs: I love them, but they are difficult to play at times due to their length and the general generic offerings most JRPG games have. It really has to be something interesting for me to like it, like Shadow Hearts: Covenant and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (Best examples of good original RPGs in the last 5 years). -WRPG: Varies. Loved Oblivion, but hated Morrowind. Love KOTOR, but hate Neverwinter Nights. I really want to try Mass Effect, though. -Puzzle Games: I like Tetris and Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, but that is about it. -Shooters: I've had some enjoyable moments in shooters, and it is sadly becoming the main type of game in America. They can either be really good (Half Life 2, Bioshock, Call of Duty), Average (Halo 2-3), to poor (Most other shooters). -Tactics games (Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics): I love them, but they really need to go 3D. Not a big fan of Fire Emblem, though. -Platformer: Close to dead, outside of the Mario, Metroid, Castlevania and Sonic games. Most of these are shovelware, sadly. -Sneaking (Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, Hitman): Metal Gear is one of my favorites, since it doesn't take the whole sneaking thing too seriously. Hitman is also decent, although Splinter Cell is eh. Most other games int his style are crap, though. -shmups (R-Type, Galaga, etc): Eh, not a big fan. I know many people love them, but I never really got into it. -MMOs: I never have the patience to play them...Got to level 40 on WoW after 3 years and deleted my character, while only getting to level 10 in FFXI. I would like them more if they didn't charge so much a month to play them. -RTS games: I started too late with PC gaming, so I never saw the magic in it. I can see how some people are obsessed with them, though. -Action (God of War, Zelda, etc): Love them, although they can be pretty plain at times. -On-Rails shooters: Good in the arcade, horrible at home. Umbrella Chronicles is wasted potential and I am still upset that they decided to go that route. Needless to say, I am more of a RPG/Shoote/Action-Adventure sort of guy. Metal Gear, Castlevania, Zelda and Half Life are among my favorites, while I tend to hate RTS, On-Rails shooters, Sports games, shmups, and such.
I wrote something about JRPGs in mine as well, but I deleted it. Not because I thought it would offend, but rather because it was because I still somewhat like them. I should have named this thread "What are your opinions on the various genres" or something. As for JRPGs, I kinda like them still, but Nippon Ichi's Japanese Strategy RPGs, the last several games they've released feel a lot like rehashes, and they have stupidly impossible (and useless to do) sidequests. Grinding up to level 9999 (Yes, the counter goes that high) for bragging rights after you kill Baal is a joke, in my opinion. About the only RTS I like is Dawn of War, and I've heard that its great for beginners. I played a little Starcraft, but I much rather like the Requisition system than the mineral and vespene gas harvesting resources one. Those types of RTSs are kinda stressful, and the only way to win is to rush at the beginning. I've heard that most SC games don't last more than 10 minutes. At least in professional Korean matches. I think its interesting you said you didn't like Fire Emblem, as I actually liked FE7 more than Disgaea and FFT. Speaking of FPS, I dunno. One of my very favorite FPSs was Star Wars Battlefront. And its part RTS, in a way. I'd love to see more games done in this style, rather than just Star Wars. I think it would work well in a Warhammer 40K setting. But I may be saying that just because I love the franchise.
Yeah, Nippon Ichi is horrible about not changing their graphics or gameplay from game to game. I loved Disgaea, but I didn't really like Makai Kingdom. Doesn't help that they made no effort on improving much of anything in Disgaea 3. JRPGs are OK, but I need them to at least have a good story or good gameplay for me to invest 50 hours in them. A example of what I mean is Brave Story: New Traveler for the PSP. Pretty game, but very generic and has a horrible story. Another example is Star Ocean 3: A game many people can relate to as being "pretty bad". I don't know why, but Fire Emblem feels like a kick in the balls. I might like it more if I spent more time with it, but it just doesn't seem to offer too many advantages to the player at times, and the whole "You lose your all of your health points so I can't fight anymore" thing is just lame.
Fighting games, eventhough I really like to watch other people play them I never find the time and patience to actually learn all the moves (and I can't be bothered) so I tend to suck at it hence it's not my genre and I never play them by myself or with others that are better then somebody just testing it ;-) Allthough I had a time I liked to play soul calibur on the DC and back in the days Mortal Combat but only for the blood and finishing moves
SPORTS GAMES in this order (top being the most hated) American Football Basket Ball Ice Hockey Baseball Football (Soccer) Golf Pool / Snooker / Billiards Actually the last two I quite enjoy but I'd never buy them over a shooter, driving game, Fighter, etc... Yakumo
I wanted to say sports too, but I realized that the most fun I had with sports games are games like Virtua Tennis DC or Pro Evo PS/PS2 playing with 2 or 4 friends was really fun! or back in the days games like: NBA Jam American Football and Baseball not but thats just because I didn't grow up with those sports and I dont understand them.
I don't really dislike a genre per se, but I tend to find most sport/racing/flight titles boring. But I have found some nice titles in these gere to. As an example I remember really enjoying Ace Combat 2 for PSX.
You just reminded me of a genre I hate. Flight Simulators. I can't stand them and will never ever play them.
I have tried really hard to like Simulators, with Mech sims being my "Favorite" out of them, but they still bore me. Although Armored Core can be played like an FPS, the pacing is really slow, and I usually hate the missions. I also remember the first game being really repetitive.
The last mech sim I played was Mechwarrior2 (does that count?). I'd like to try Steel Battallion if it wasn't so Gd expensive.
Sports games I've never enjoyed - but then I've never enjoyed real sport, with the exception of table tennis. I don't enjoy the realistic racing games either. While I appreciate the advances these games make in realistic graphics, I find them a chore to play. The Mario Karts and Wipeouts, however, I love. While not exactly a genre, I'm also finding the more linear games with rigid stories harder to enjoy. I like to explore, I'm the type that spends hours trying to escape the level rather than complete it.
My tastes seem to have changed over the last 10 years or so. It is extremely hard for me to find a game I actually want to devote time too. Lately I seem to only be playing shmups and RPGs (Lunar 2, FFIII). For some reason, my least favorite games seem to be whatever my friends start nut_swinging over - which is always whatever the newest thing that pops up on IGN is or on TV commercials, regardless if it is good or they even know anything about the genre. It aggravates me because none of them seem to want to learn about or take the time to appreciate older games or unfamiliar genres.
The sims anything like that is dreadfull Golf is so boring in real life and in games and most kinds of simulators i cant understand how anyone would want to play these
I hate the NFL games, but only because i don't know how to play footbal (xD) Also hate sims games, and that's about it
Theres too much sport game knocking here for my liking - Get some virtua tennis, pro evo (winning eleven outside europe) and table tennis into your gamingstream and enjoy - particularly with a few mates. The annual update cycle is annoying, but just do what I do and buy it every other year or so, and pick your games carefully! Personally I can't stand RPGs...Boooooorrrrriiiinnnggg....They last far too long and there's too much tedious crap in them
