OK, so I may be relocating to China for 9 months or so.. what console should I bring to keep me company? Handhelds a re a given, so this is just consoles. Your Choices Are: MSX 2+ FM Towns WonderMega PC Engine Dreamcast PS1 Game Cube w/ GBA Player Wii Xbox360 I'm leaning toward the Cube. What say you?
Out of those choices I'd say Dreamcast or Wondermega. DC because you can always burn CDR's if you run out of games (you're in China you might as well pirate stuff!) and once again you'll find loads of pirate MD carts to keep you busy.
Dreamcast, Wii or 360. If you had to take just one, maybe 360 since you can always get demos or buy imports from HK for dirt cheap.
I'd say Cube or DC. Both of those have lots of great games for them, and if you bring a DC you could probably get lots of cheap imports for it. You could probably bring them both, actually, since they're pretty small.
Dreamcast or PSX... I'd lean towards the psx more simply because it has a bigger library last time I checked. Dreamcast is small and has some amazing games though...
So are its games ;-) And what does then FM Towns, MSX2 & co in that poll if you like to travel light? It's not that they are any smaller or lighter.
The Saturn, obviously. Even if it's not one of the choices. But seriously, the PCE and DC are the smallest, so you could just take both
Dreamcast because Geist Force and Sturmwind will both be here very shortly and why not pick up a slim PStwo, get it modded and see what goodies for the PSX and PS2 you can find in the form of 'Silvers', you've got pretty much everything covered then
My vote would be for the Wii because it's small, can play Wii, GameCube, Wiiware, and Virtual Console.
I'd take a Dreamcast and a hacked Wii. The Wii is like a universal emulator machine. It's almost all I play some weeks. And the Dreamcast is outstanding and CDRs will be common in China. I'd give the 360 a distant third place, so you could stay in current generation gaming. That (and a modded slim PS2) is what I've got connected to my TV as I speak. ... The only issue I see here is that you're in Japan, which is NTSC, and China is PAL. This might be a problem.
I'm assuming the OP will bring a laptop or other computer with him, so why bring a console just to play emulators?
Bring a Famicom. Or buy a Chinese Famiclone/Edutainment computer. Then get games from the street for cheap. While it might be old school for other countries, 8-bit computers are still the rage in China. Mostly because most people in the poor areas can't afford anything else!
