Hi. Merry Christmas. This is a PAL system. What could be the problem and solution: It powers ON, the lens moves when it is closed but the spindle does not run even though it does run when you use a a battery and wire. The motor for the up and down motion of the lens also runs if you use a battery and two wires (both the motors in the GD-ROM lens assembly are working).

If a resistor or capacitor or some other subcomponent on the power supply is damages which one could it or them be?

    Thank you in advance.

    God bless, Rev. 21:4

This is a request for repair help, not a development issue. Moved to the repairs section - you're more likely to get a response there.

So the pickup is only trying to focus?
    does it light up?
    Probably a dead pickup

That'd be my assumption. If it doesn't light up, then it's the laser (or at least the laser pickup) at fault. For a lot of optical drives, they won't bother spinning the disc if the laser can't detect anything, and if the laser is dead, it won't be sensing jack, so the disc won't spin.

My guess is that one channel on the BTL driver chip is blown up. I think it's a Rolm BA5986 on those Samsung drives. Before replacing it I would also check the motor very carefully - connect your meter in low-resistance ohms mode across the motor terminals and turn the output shaft very slowly and verify that there is no point in the motor's rotation where it goes short. This is by far the most common reason for the driver chip failing.

What does it do if there's a disc in it, and you leave the "lid" shut? :/
