I remember winning a Lynx when they were pretty new through a competition on Kellogs cereal boxes, got some nifty Lynx pin badges too.
One of the worst games I've ever played. If you do get a Lynx, stay the fuck away from this one. That's about £70, I'd say that's a pretty bad deal. It's really not that good a system. If you can find it cheaper (about half that price) you'll be happy, but if you put down that cash for it you'll end up wondering why.
Ugh, doesn't anyone remember the sound, and graphics? It had like 100x80 resolution! Remember the horrible conversions of NES games? Its C64 all over again. People needing a reminder visit www.atariage.com
Wow, after looking at the screen shots from the link that kyuusaku left, the Atari Lynx does look really naff. Never remember it looking so blocky. Yakumo
Its the combination of blockyness and slow animation that makes it hell to play. I think my favorite game for it is Gauntlet, thats the only thing Atari can do right
I have owned both versions of the lynx in the past and the games for it are pretty dire. The only 2 games that i loved on it were Klax & chip's challenge both are really nice puzzle games. Klax is a particularly nice conversion. The hardware is impressive but lack of any really decent software killed it. Just goes to show fancy colour graphics dont sell a hand held (take note PSP)
Those who bash the Lynx's technical quality need to play some Gameboy again... dont know about you but I *really* can't stand the GB screen. *goes and pukes in the corner*
Raiden, Super Off-Road 4WD and several others came out and you can buy them on ebay.de sometimes. Or try http://www.atarihq.de/
Good call chap. It's a Telegames release. Seems that they're releasing loads of unreleased stuff and also new stuff for Jaguar and Lynx. Cool.
Lynx I am surprise to see someone bash the Lynx technical capabilities. The games certanly dont look as blocky on the Lynx small screen as the screenshots at Atari Age, those were taken trough the Handy emulator, and there is an option to smooth the pictures up. The Lynx was an amazing piece of hardware for its time, and was only completly eclipsed by the GBA (and newer portables of course). That the games sucked was not the hardwares fault, but the game programers. And there were some good games on its library. I am sorry, but i am a big Lynx fan, so i have to stand up for it. To see an example of what the Lynx can really do, take a look at the recently released game, Alpine Games, it features some impressive graphics and effects. Think of what a company like Nintendo could have done with the hardware! (actually, Epyx tried to sell the hardware to Nintendo, at one point). I love my Lynx!
I have to agree with Kyuusake on this one,the Lynx was an absolue peice of shite, point!!! Graphics were ugly, blurry and horrible, games were crap, and there is not one peice of killer software that is up there with the average stuff nintendo were putting out on the GB. The other colour handheld's of that time were vastly superior, the game Gear has some shit hot games out for it,especially the later jap releases. The PC engine GT also has the vast catologue of engine titles and you would be advised to go for that before any other if handhelds float your boat.Better still keep your money in your pocket for the PSP and DS. I have to say it again, the lynx is such an awful peice of shite. :smt022 :angry
Oh yeah! This reminds me. I did get a Lynx, and I'm really enjoying it! I think those of you who don't like Lynx should go back and try it again. If you like Western Games, it's a sure fire hit!
I remember back in 1991 purchasing a Game Boy the same day my brother got an atari lynx, and regretting not buying one instead after seeing him playing xenophobe and california games. I had great fun with: Xenophobe Zarlor Mercenary (Very nice vertical shooter) Viking Child Rygar I only was dissapointed with Gauntlet, there is nothing wrong with the game except holding the lynx vertically.
At one point in my childhood I found a store which was blowing out all Lynx products. He offered something like $40 for a new unit + 3 games. He had pretty decent box of games, as well as linkup cables. So I was debating if I would be happier with the Lynx, or my $40... I ended up keeping my $40.
