Well it all began with my facination for specs of consoles back when I was 10-16 I guess, and then buying the imported EGM/Edge magazines with future and import console pictures that played with my imagination..
Also being so young you don't have the resources to buy most import consoles or specials and now that things have changed (more money and the possibility to find most stuff on internet/ebay) I am buying all the stuff I dreamed of having when I was a kid ;)

N64. I used to have some experience on emulation (SNES specifically) before, but knowing the rareness of the N64 dev kits I just had to get a few. Possibly I will expand my interests to other consoles (Atari Jaguar / Sega Saturn / PC engine) once I get my hands on what I want...who knows :)

For me it was sega cd. I just liked having something which many people didnt quite know much about. After that I got my turbo grafx 16+cd, Sega saturn usa and japanese systems, 3do systems and cdi systems. I just find it interesting how different companies make their hardware and how I can tell my friends I play Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on my 3do.

For me the interest in rare consoles comes from the stories/plans behind them .
Hearing what companys wanted to do with thesse console from the start and what they would be capable of doing is very interesting and see what they actually turned out like is cool. i also like the fact that while everyone talks about the new consoles like ps3,360 and wii i can talk about stuff they never heard off

For me, it's not a fascination in rare consoles but with development units instead. I never really liked or was interested in Sega or the Dreamcast till I came across pictures of an HKT-0120 Development Box & blank GD-R on the old ASSEMblergames Site Museum back in 04'.

I have no idea. I just love video games, and mroe video games is always good. :) Plus my interest in them makes me the local information repository when it comes to video games. throw in the fact that, when it's unique it just will perk interest in it. Everyone who has seen my debug psx for example goes "whats with the green psx?" and I explain the psx, and they go "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?! HOW DID YOU GET THAT!?"

CVG (Computer and Video Games) magazine. Partly thanks to their "Retro" pages, partly because of their features on rarer games and consoles, and partly because of their extreme enthusiasm for all things gaming.

Also Edge magazine ran some pretty interesting articles on unreleased stuff and looking back on older games.

For me I think it's just a general collector's mentality of wanting to possess rarities, no matter what it is you collect: Eventually you acquire enough of the "common" stuff, but your collecting lust is not yet satisfied., so you are left to ask yourself "where can I go from here?" Then you begin to search for what else is out there and naturally you learn about the obscure/weird/rare stuff. And since for most collectors the thrill of the hunt is just as much fun as the actual acquisition and archiving of new items, if not moreso, tracking down the obscure stuff becomes your new obsession.

Now, of course I don't have every officially-released console in my collection -- I still need a Bally Professional Arcade, an Emerson Arcadia, a WonderSwan, GP32, heck I don't have a Jaguar or 3D0 yet (not that I'm in a hurry) (oh and I need an Epoch Super Cassette Vision for the Lupin the 3rd game I recently got for it!) -- but it does get to the point where you learn of new frontiers to explore, whether it's dev systems or pirate clone consoles, and that helps energize your collecting passion.

    Wow that was...rambly. Sorry.

For me it was sega cd. This was around the time when sega cd emulation was being talked about but was considered an impossible reality(though it did happen a couple of months later).

Anyway after reading about all these games I didn't even know exsisted on it, I decided to get one. Now at this time they were going for like $50-60 on ebay, I was lucky to get one for $40 with shipping off a Canadian member of sega xtreme forums.

After that it was a sega saturn, which I surprisingly picked up at a comic con.

    The games.

Seriously I buy consoles because of the games, Japanese games look nicer and there is more choice.

I don't think anything is really that rare though, except a few things and I quite like my kidneys.

When I was a kid, I was getting every system my family could afford. That, combined with imported magazines, evolved into what I do in my spare time nowdays: killing money on vintage electronic equipment that give moments of happiness.

didnt really have consoles as a kid and was able to splash out when i started working full time.. this meant that the earlier classics that i aspired too (MD & SNES gernation) were at that time going for very little or freebies and it grew from there... the Dev kits are a recent interest.

Back in the 90's when there was so much new and exciting technology and nearly everyone seemed like they were going to release an uber console that would dominate the market.

Consoles like the M2 & Virtual Boy are good examples of big ambition with poor (read: 'no' for M2) execution.

Just because some consoles of yester-year were not managed properly doesn't mean they wouldn't of totally kicked arse if they had been supported properly.

The same can be said for certain games which never saw the light of day.

Reading about consoles like the Konix Multisystem, SuperGrafx, and so on back in the early days. Consoles that were in advanced stages of development or those that had their lives cut short fascinated me and still do to this day.

Well I played what most people did in the early 90s, Megadrive/SNES etc. Then in 2001 I got a hold of my very own SNES unit and relived all those glorious childhood memories. It just snowballed from their really.
