I haven't gotten into rare or dev consoles yet. I'm still trying to collect for the popular ones!

general interest for consoles iam more a pc guy quit the normal console playing after the master system 2 in the early 90s got back into videogames with the xbox

for the rare stuff was lurking around the net for info on the xbox prototypes and somehow stumbled across assemblers museum read every page he had there and then joined the forum
from there hmm once i had some cash the right opurtunity came and i got into the 3do m2 collecting =)

now iam selling my stuff part for part only keeping the rarest things just dont have enough time for serious programming on the sdks =(

For me it started when walking past a shop called G-Force in Glasgow - they've always been big on importing latest stuff from Japan....they had a dreamcast and I blown away by the graphics - a racing game with no 'jaggy' lines...

That was in the early days when DC was released in Japan but not anywhere else.....the excitment of the DC was immense.....

A few years later I rediscovered the world of Japanese DCs and was blown away......

Sega deserve so much more for their guts and innovation. Only Nintendo deserve to stand on the podium with them.....

I like videogames. This site got me hooked on them more and made me buy expensive shit that could've been used elsewhere lol.

Not complaining. I do believe that a system must be setup to be able to preserve old and unreleased games for historical purposes but without having to violate IP laws, etc. The current traditional system isn't very effective but this underground community is the best place for information you wouldn't hear IGN, etc. talk about without having to pay lawyers, etc.

It's an uphill battle. Reason information on such things is very little and hard to come by is the legal system behind it. I would like to change that, but not where it violates the rights of the original IP holders, but somewhere in between where collectors who acquired these items are able to discuss them publicly without having to face legal recourse, like Assembler has experienced before with numerous games.

Started with a NES ages ago, or a Vocabulary enchancer as I would keep cursing/swearing every time I died on Super Mario.

Then I paid £300 for a PS1 when it first came out.

Then I found in an old games magazine Virtual Boy`s for about £30-40 and games at a few pound. Did a WWW search and became mates with Ferry over at www.virtual-boy.org and then a freind of his who was into games making/collecting and paid $1400 for virtual bowling many years ago , and then just came across ASSEMbler and found out about all these "other non-retail" machines. So it went on from them there.

Don`t do my own dev/design etc....most are for paper weights or some I use if I can get the relevant software as well.

For me I grew up with the systems and either bought it new, or recieved it as a gift from family or developer friends.

The fact that if you don't own rare consoles there are games out there that you cannot play. As I gamer I want to play everything and experience the whole of the gaming scene.

In reality, there are areas that are not truly worth visiting - like the playdia - but the sense that you are playing something so far of the beaten track has its own rewards.

Also in reality the rarest and most obscure tends to turn up on the most mainstream consoles!

I think like alot of people on here, I got into rare gaming through seeing photos of foreign systems in the back of game mags.

pretty much the same for me.

reading in EGM about the SuperGrafx, the unreleased Namco 16-bit system,
the unreleased Konix MultiSystem, the NEO-GEO.

    the FM Towns Marty.

    NEC' Iron Man ==> PC-FX, Sega's GigaDrive ===> Saturn.

Then over a decade later, a system that, while not a console, was rare, was completely amazing and played console-like and arcade games, the Sharp X68000, a system which completely renewed my interest in rare gaming hardware.

I guess it would have to be when I got a ps2, why I don't know, but I just started collecting since then, now i don't have space for stuff.

I remember seeing the blue gamegear for the first time, that really got me into colored systems. I also really liked seeing the white saturn in the back of EGMs.

I'd have to intially blame (a) the Densha De GO! game series & (b) the PSX (DESR-5000) that I brought to play them on. In the process of finding info on the PSX, I ended up lurking more on here & having my eyes opened to a bunch of other nifty/expensive stuff that I'd barely known existed before.

Have to say that although I'm a pack-rat collector, I don't get stuff purely for its rareness/exclusivity (though it is icing on the cake) - it's all brought with an intention to use. I'm not good at keeping things factory sealed forever... ;-)
