Okay guys, what in your opinion is the best videogame ever made, of all time? Tell me what it is and why you chose it.
Ooooh, I've got a feeling this could start some flame wars, hee hee. It's also super-hard to pick the best game of all time... hmm.... I'm going to have to go with a cliche answer and say Final Fantasy VII. I was so captivated by that game when it came out, and I still love it to this day. It's got a sprawling, sometimes confusing, but very engrossing plot, and despite the boxiness of the characters, the backgrounds are very beautiful and convey well the locations of the game, and even the Lego-looking characters have a certain appeal. Add to that the sheer amount of optional/hidden stuff in the game (Yuffie & Vincent, Chocobo Breeding, Cursed Ring, Ocean & Desert Weapons, etc.) for replay/exploration value, and you have one heck of a game. I also give it a vote because it was the RPG that really had the strength to catapult Final Fantasy into the mainstream, regardless of the effect it had on successive installments in the series - it had to be something special to wake people up like that. Very close runners-up in my mind were Chrono Trigger, Gunstar Heroes, Super Mario Bros., Gradius, Castlevania, and Ikaruga. It's too tough.. :smt017
I will go with a less than obvious one: TETRIS (Original B&W GB Version) Simply because its the only game that STILL has me screaming with both joy and frustration, even after all these years. Take Mario for example (but applies to any action/platformed/sim), at some point you can finish the game a hundred times in a row without losing a single life. With something like Tetris, you always want to get to that next level, get that next tetris. Simply classic gaming! My greatest moment, was in Game A mode and getting the infamous exocet missile thing shooting up after losing on level... uh... cant remember... :smt019
Hmmmm.... Metal Gear Solid came at a time I was losing interest in games and pulled me back in....if only for that reason (and the fact that I could still play it over and over today) I call it my best game of all time. Gotta go Otacon is calling....
Sorry Otacon... Sorry to scare you Otacon...I was just hitting on one of the women at the lab!!! lol..... :smt061 :drinkers: thought I'd throw Phantasy Star IV in the ring....loved that game too.
Have to say, Zelda: OoT and aLttP are the joint 1st place finest games ever. With Mario64 and MarioWorld a very close joint 2nd place.

I've got to go with Tetris as well. Games like Final Fantasy and Zelda are great games but in the end they can get old and you can do everything. Tetris has a different outcome every time you play. Simple and addictive.
This is a tough one...as for the game that made me love games...I know its somewhere in the Mario Series...I started by loving Super Mario Bros ...but during my Genesis years I got bored due to the huge amount of same old same old platformers and such...(resources weren't good back then...it was hard to know what was a really good game...I ended up owing popular mainstream games...like all of the Sonics...and sports games like NBA Jam...and Montana Football...as well as whatever looked good in the stores...) I never stopped playing games...in fact...I played them constantly during that time...but I never really got excited about new games from about 1991 through 1994... But in late 1994, my family got our first decent computer...(always had an outdated one...) and the game that sucked me into games again was Doom II...it was just so damn different and so damn Amazing....I started playing more and more PC games...Rise of The Triad, Quake, and so many graphic adventures...(Return to zork, Myst [bleh!], Full Throttle)and I was into games again... Finally...after much Hype, N64 came...and Mario 64 came with it. I went out of my way to play that game when it came out. I woke up early to play it. I stayed up late to play it. I fought to play it. I lived that game...Mario 64 and Nintendo 64 made me love console games...Why? I found it really hard to find an awful Nintendo 64 game. Not all of them are stellar...but you just knew what was good, and what was bad...you really had to go out of your way to get an awful N64 game... So...long story short...my favorite game...the game that changed things soooo much...not just for me...but for all of games...(It really rung in the age of 3D)...is Super Mario 64...Probably one of the best as well... But...when it comes to being good...imagine a game thats been on every platform imaginable...with easy to understand, yet hard to master gameplay...It is played by all people, many non gamers...It's TETRIS...of course...I love Mario 64 But Tetris makes sense as the best game ever...most people can't remember the first time they palyed tetris...or remember getting excited when they got it...or ever had the problem of getting to the end of it...(there is none really) but TETRIS has always been there in the background entertaining us....
There is no "Best Game Ever" as such, since everyone has their own opinion. Personally I'D go for Shenmue or Phantasy Star On-Line. Why? Because these two games are responsible for a new style of gaming. If there was no PSO then there'd be no Final Fantasy X2 or what ever it's called since it's a pure rip off of PSO. I don't think anything has come close to Shenmue yet. Yakumo
I'd have to say that the "Best Game Ever" for me would have to be "Castlevania 2 : Simons Quest" for my NES Its hard to say why I like it so much (I think its because I spent a whole summer playing nothing but that when I was 5 or something ^_^). But still, The game has great music and gameplay that still kicks ass to this day (Games like this are way better than alot of the platformer shite that comes out these days ^_^ Plus how can you not like the "Silence of Daylight"). What a Horrible Night for a Curse..... 0_o
So I suppose you could have different catogories here, with Tetris being best puzzle game, Super mario 64 best platformer, and FFXII best rpg. My personal favorite game of all time? I'd say it's a tie between Super Mario world/Super Mario 64/Mario Sunshine. The series just continues to amaze me. There is no "dead space" anywhere in all three of the games, no area where you just run through and do nothing. Everything has a place, every level has a secret, and it's not too easy, not too hard, but the difficult stuff is difficult not becasue the controls are wacky or the programmers were sadistic. They're perfectly balanced and in the end you just want more. 2nd place contender: Puzzle Bobble on the Neo Geo. One day I am going to drop $300 on a Neo Geo just so I can play Puzzle Bobble all day. Greatest fighting game: Super Street Fighter 3rd strike. There's just a rediculous amount of technique in that game.
Well, I have not as much childhood console game memories as most of you probably do, but there's one game that I reaaaaally started to like during the past 1.5 years, and which gets my vote for best game ever: NiGHTS into Dreams. It has a unique (and great) theme and equally unique (and great) gameplay. To me its the ultimate confluence of gameplay, graphics and sound (oh how poetic ) The fact that its been overlooked by the masses also adds a certain charm to it - and it pulled me through the hardship of my high school exams last year
I would have to choose at least a TOP 100 for best games. Can't simply choose one. Some picks: - Alex Kidd in Miracle World (SMS) - Rescue Mission (SMS) - Gunstar Heroes (MD) - Gunners Heaven (PS1) - Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)
- Very hard to pick one. Games that immediatly came to mind were(these are not in any type of order), Castlevania: SOTN Pro Evo Soccer 3 Perfect Dark Shenmue 2 Suikoden 2 Mario 64 Super Mario World Tony Hawks 2 Final Fantasy 7 Metal Gear Solid GTA 3(Will probably get crap for saying that) Super Metroid Mario Kart 64 Fallout Fallout 2 If I had to pick one it would probably be Suikoden 2. The character development was great, it had beautifull 2D graphics and a cool battle system to boot. But it was mainly because when I first played through it I got the bad ending(ending #2 for those who know) and it absoloutly crushed me(what happend to the characters). I seriously felt like shit for a week. How do you make that connection? I admitdly haven't played much PSO(played offline up to some Dragon who I couldn't kill) but from what I have played it isn't like FFX2 at all. Like I said I haven't played much so you may have to explain it to me.
