What is the difference between a Test Kit and a Dev Kit? Can a Test Kit use the DVD emulation function on the sidecar?
I don't know a lot of thing about Xbox 360 development but a test kit is mainly a unit capable of reading Xbox 360 Review/Preview disk. It was used by journalists. A dev kit is a unit with debug options. But other people on here are much more able to answer you !
Test kit and reviewer kit do almost the same thing. I have both and I use both to read review/preview disks. But as I said, I am really not a specialist. There is surely more differences. Was just looking to help a little....
okay, well there are a whole lot of differences in 360 kits regardless of what board revision there is inside most times. Reviewer Kit: black xenon, no sidecar. Takes HDD only. Used for media outlets Stress kit: this is a retail appearing kit, no sidecar, takes HDD, only indication it's something is the stress cables coming out the top. These connect to a lamprey board and into a PC interface to stress the kits to overload. Can be phat or slim Dvd stress kit: stress cables out the top but also has multiple sata cables from where a dvd drive should go. Never seen as a slim. Demo kit: totally retail appearing but has a small decal on the back indicating it's a demo kit or a can be a white retail console with a black elite style back serial label. Used at trade shows. In the United Kingdom there were multiple examples of white slim kits with sharp beeps that were otherwise modern demo kits. Test kit: white phat kit with white sidecar on top. Pix port is covered inherently. Also is what a slim is referred when it has no sidecar attached (purposely detachable). Development kit: black phat kit with grey sidecar. Also slim with optional sidecar. Xna kit: mostly Jasper boards, some seen Falcon. Blue sidecar/eject bezel on full dev kit. Greenish tinted sidecar bezel/eject on test version. Engineering Sample: at times are clear or clear/white. Seen in slim kits as well as early Xbox One prototypes. "E3 Demo":not really having a name, this is like a demo kit but looks identical to an elite retail. No indications externally it's an xdk. Internally has flashing yellow led and typical green led inside near fans. Called E3 demo because it's the only place these have been found in. Two in the wild are known. One I own. XeDK 1: prototype xenon xdk. With black sidecar on black shell. XeDK 2: prototype xenon xdk in white. Never seen with a sidecar. Only stress cables coming out of the top. Bottom line is all can run beta discs. Units with sidecars can dvd emulate. Kits running Devkit kernel can use pix and kernel debugging with pix port uncovered on phat kits. All kits without a sidecar will say "test kit" unless there has been some software modifications done.
Thanks XboxSurgeon this is a whole new world here not just a Rgh or Jtag console with Dev kits. So basically the one you would want to be capable of doing anything is the so Dev kit Kernel and Test Kits are the best? What of the Alpha kits? Like the crackdown in prototopia will only run in a alpha kit I was, told?
XeDK run the Crackdown beta. It's because that beta is an xex1. Today's 360, Dev or retail, run xex2.
