Also, how much more reliable would it be than my PS2 (which started having drive problems after 6 months)?

I want to buy at least a Playstation 1, as I'm itching to play Star Ocean 2, along with my 20 other untouched Playstation games.

My PSone (the small model, I hate how sony is trying to make PSone the generic name for the system now and the media is following them) has proven to be very reliable, I`ve had it for 2 years now and it has always worked :smt023
Even use it in the car from time to time, and even there it works without problems when its on my lap (ie not at a constant angle) and on bumpy rides :smt023

I used to have one as well, and you're right, it seemed to work very well. The only problem is that they're a tiny bit more expensive than the regular Playstations, but I suppose $10 extra is better than having it break down :).

    Thanks Antipasta!

I have a 7501 or whatever the U/C 7500 is, had it since 1998/9. Never had any problems, except sometimes the power and eject buttons stick. Now I'm in the market for a SCPH-1000.

The key to making them last long is to...

    A) when taking out the CD, hold down the black spindle. DO NOT just pop up the CD on the side without holding down the spindle, thats how it gets loose. I learned this the hardway.

    B) Buy more than one. I have 3 PSX consoles. They will last me 30years.

    If you are lucky

:smt043 That is if you are lucky! I think mine has just about bit the dust now. It will not read CD's at all (games or music) and it wont read some DVD games now (my brother rented Spiderman 2 for some unholy reason and I could not get it to work at all. He even exchanged it for another disc but no luck.

Theres an addon card that you solder onto the PSOne board. However playing VCDs on the PSX isn't recommended because it wears down the laser faster.

I've bought two Playstations. The first was a release day model that still plays games except it has the FMV problem. The second one (SCPH-7501) works fine. My PS2's on the are junk. I'm on my forth one technically. I bought one on launch day that died so I bought another that died. I sent them both in to be fixed (which they did for free) and now one of them has died again. They seem to last a year and a half before disc read error starts so at least Sony got one thing consistent. I'll be calling Sony soon and you better believe they will be fixing it again for free.

  13. As far as the VideoCD issue goes - on the original PSX (I refuse to call it a PSone unless it's the tiny redesigned model) there are a few addon devices/cards that plug into the parallel port that allow the playing of VCDs. My roommate had one made by Gamars, and that seemed to work pretty well. I have no idea how the hell you get Video CD on the PSone tho.... Or you could just get that asian region white PSX that has VCD capability built in - I thought assember had something about it on the site somewhere.

And as far as the durability of units goes, I bought a refurbished (by Sony) SCPH-7500 my junior year of high school, and it has been with me these last five years and is still going strong, no problems at all.

    re

Thanks guys. It'll be another week or so, but I think I'm definitely going for the PSOne (the smaller one, of course). I'm not sure what I'll do about a Playstation 2, though. I liked my old one just fine, but I don't want to buy another one when it'll just have the same problems.

What you should do Taemos, is buy one of those mega rare Japanese ltd edition coloured PS2's (I suggest the luminous yellow one). That way you would have paid so much for it, you wouldn't dare plug it in and use it, therefore it will last forever!

    Fantastic idea :smt043 :smt027 .

I have another question (I'm just hoping I won't get flamed for it). What would be a good way to mount a neon light on the back side of my Xbox (without drilling, I can't/won't drill)? The light has been installed (I'd show pictures, but no digital camera), I just need a way to keep it in one place.

Sadly, I don't think that will work, seeing as how the back of the console is curved. I'm trying to be rather careful with the neon tube, as my main two concerns right now are it overheating (which I don't think will be a problem) and mounting it. I'm afraid that if I tie it down it may break the tube...

I was thinking hot glue but everyone tells me that will melt the tube. I'm not sure what to do right now...

Use the hot glue to fix the plastic ends the tube plugs into. That way (assuming its flexible glue) you can change tubes if needed. Or use a clip fixed to the inside, I forget what they are called, but they are springy metal and look like the greek letter Omega:

    Screw/glue goes this side:

Tube clips in through this opening.

There is also a bleach-white _official_ VCD PSX. Gamars made the original VCD apparatus, later a second version was revised that is connected solely by cables. There IS a Gamars VCD card/modchip board for PSOne, when you start up your PSO, bam, a VCD/Goldfinger menu.
