Hello, seeing my tv is a bit too small while playing multiplayer games:banghead: i want to buy a new tv,what kind of tv do you recommend guys? i currently use a CRT tv from philips Thanks in advance;-)
It all depends upon what system you are using. Anything Saturn / PlayStation backwards then you're better off with a flat screen SD CRT NOT a HD CRT since they are just as bad as LCD screens. Yakumo
Weren't you quite pleased with the RGB quality when you got yours? Why don't you settle back to SD RGB, due to the Wii?
Wii is fine on HD because it's 480p and even 480i games and emulation looks fine. The problem with HD CRT is when you use real retro consoles. Mega Drive and SFC look bloody awful. So bad in fact that they look better running via composite! Maybe it's just my TV but anything lower than 480i looks total crap unless you stick it through an upscailer such as the XRGB machines. Yakumo
This is not true. The only issue is that the aspect ratio is different to the 4:3 traditional screen.
What? Have you ever used a retro console on a HD screen? They look awful. Also all wide screen TVs have a 4:3 mode anyway so that isn't an issue. The main problem is that a HD CRT or HD LCD won't display lower resolutions how they should be displayed. Which results in a nasty image. Yakumo
Some gamers don't mind the wishy-washy picture quality you get out of a lowres console connected to an HDTV. Sure, the colors look nice and everything is very smooth. But if you try to connect older consoles you will get a very annoying "buzzing" all around edges of sprites/bitmaps. Even worse are the missing scanlines, nothing looks better in lowres games than sharp and clear scanlines between each row of pixels! I have tried it for a couple of months and then happily resettled to my old CRT. I even prefer Cinch (RCA jack) on a tube to Cinch on an LCD.
I keep hearing of emulators that fake the raster/scanline effect so that the games appear authentic on high-def tellies. Of course some people expect that they can still play their original consoles on futuristic hologram sets but for the realists emulation is just as good if you search hard enough for optimal solutions (proper emulators, gamepad adapters etc). And the aspect ratio debate is redundant. You can switch to 4:3 on 99% of LCD TVs.
I'm perfectly happy with my pre "HD" games. For this reason I don't see myself getting an HDTV for a loooong time. Less than a year ago I upgraded my Ferguson 21" CRT to a 29" Sony Trinitron, which is perfect for gaming and normal resolution video streaming through my Xbox.
Yes, it was the reason I bought the CRT HD TV. Retro games look great. Maybe it varies between TV models? I have a Best Buy Insignia branded HD CRT with 1080i max res, 32" widescreen. I believe the circuitry is Toshiba.
Mine is a Victor (JVC) 36" widescreen 1080i max res but looks F*ing awful when using stuff such as a Super Famicom or Mega Drive via SVIDEO. Saturn, DC and Wii look great though due to the high resolutions.
I've messed with a number of HD displays and, unless you're going to be spending a shitload of cash on something like a Pioneer Elite set, the best HD sets for retro gaming are the Philips LCD panels from 2007-2008. -hl718
I tried my NES on my new LCD TV recently just to check it out and holy shit it was awful. It was better than the LCD monitor I had used before, but the graphics were all washed out still and it just looked like crap. I suppose if you want an all in one type display you'd need one of those monitors that is multi sync and can run in high resolutions but also low and strange resolutions which you sometimes see in arcade cabinets.
One to watch for is warranties. Samsung have reduced 3 yr to 1 yr on LCD. A lot have already done it before. I just bought a samsung as they were changing over. Sure u can buy an extended warranty but at cost and questionable if it's the same as manufs warranty
This thing has never let me down and my old school gaming looks amazing on it . especially With emulation and the video going over via hdmi. in this pic i still was using a 512 ATI HD 2600 with power strip which is basically a unmodded Arcade VGA 3000 http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html it was buggy as hell grey bars on the side bad geometry but my new 2GB Nvidia 610 with 2 DVI ports and an mini HDMI fixed all of that and no more need for powerstrip i can put in progressive or interlaced custom resolutions in using the control bar for instance i can do neogeo at 320x224 looks amazing. I also use A monitor calibrating software call Atrise Lutcurve http://atrise.com/lutcurve/ so i always have a perfect image like no color bleeding ect perfect black and white levels (ive had people get new 3d tvs and praise them and im like why the F*** is yellow orange 99% of tv's are uncalibrated its a horrible truth id. id still like too Get a XRGB for my 3Dtv but only if they make an hdmi unit with out scanlines (yea not a scanline guy) so pretty much when it comes too SD gaming it beats the 3D LG everytime.
