PlayStation 4 To Be Neutered, Rendered Disc-Less

The PlayStation 3 isn't out yet, but that doesn't stop Sony's Phil Harrison from making wild speculations about the capability of Playstation 4. According to him, the PS4 won't support physical discs. At all. He opines:

I'd be amazed if the PlayStation 4 has a physical disc drive.​

So you mean in 5-10 years, our home's series of tubes/big trucks/broadband connections will be fat enough to download a 50GB game in a decent amount of time? We sure hope so.

You guys are missing the point. In an effort to combat piracy (and mod chips and rentals and reselling and...), the PS4 will simply act as a dumb terminal. Your input will be sent over the network to Sony's master servers, which will then simply send you the audio and video data for your active game session (think "remote desktop"). Afterall, everyone already has high speed internet access with no lag or bandwidth restrictions...

 

It will have a disc drive just like the Phantom's.

 

That's crazy talk. Since I used to work in an inner-city school, I know that tons of kids have a ps2 and only a small handful have high-speed internet. I'd be shocked if Sony could make a go of that kind of distribution method in 5 years. They would effectively shun the mass market in my opinion.

Hah holy Shit they are pissing themself off :lol: Although a Console with no media wouldn't be bad at all...but it surely would be expensiver than FLASH RAM.

 

Gagh...I figured it out. A console without media...means each game requires a dedicated console! Want to have the launch lineup of ten games? Well, you are going to have to buy ten different consoles, each with one of the games preloaded on it.
