Actually Sega US Did change the music because the early version of Sonic CD called CD Sonic features the same music as the final japanese and PAL versions. That early build was shown way before the US release. I also have 2 Sonic CD remixes that were removed from the final game. They're pretty cool too. Yakumo
The only Sonic game that I truly enjoyed and found myself replaying often was Sonic 2 (Genesis). Nothing else really held my attention...Sonic 1 was repetitive, Sonic 3 was obviously a rush product. Sonic & Knuckles was boring even with the lock-on technology. Sonic CD was just OK...not sure why people liked it so much. The Sonic games on the DC weren't anything special either, IMO. Something about putting a deliberately fast-moving game in 3D simply does not work, again IMHO.
My favorite one is Sonic CD, and I also have never found any bug playing it on my Sega CD. I haven't played all 3D Sonic games (specially the Dreamcast ones) so I can't say anything about them.
I think SA2 would actually be a masterpiece if it didn't have that ONE space stage where it's impossible to find the three jewels. Though all those "find the three jewels" scenarios are somewhat crappy. I wasn't much of a sega gamer before the Dreamcast (The Saturn was pretty much never sold down here) What exactly is the difference between the soundtrack in the JP and US versions of Sonic CD ?
Oh man I forgot about 3D blast, that was the worst I personally don't mind the US Sonic CD music and actually like Sonic R's, I haven't played that since it was released and I can still hum the tunes
There were tonnes of crappy Sonic games around the Sonic 3d time, epsecially for the Gamegear. Sonic Drift 1+2, Labyrinth, Spinball, Tail's Sky Patrol... There was also Tails Adventures which was pretty good, strange game though.
Sonic the Hedgehog had the most style for me, all the Mega drive games with their amazing artwork were great(jap versions).I'd have to say I loved the first game and Sonic CD the most though. The first game was just so radically different to anything we had played up until then. The character just oozed coolness and the game moved at such blinding speeds.Sonic 2 was a great game as well, but it didn't have the impact of the first game, although it was a better game after extended play. I have to agree with Anti Pasta that Sonic jam is the best way to experience Sonic, play all the games and then go on to play Sonic Cd after it, and you get 2d platforming at it's finest, only to be rivalled by Mario World and Yossy Island in fact. The 3d title Sonic Adventure 2 battle is one fine game as well, and I urge anyone who likes platforming to try it out ,as it really is right up there with mario 64 imo. :smt045
Sonic 2 on game gear!! No, I'm kidding, that was the WORST Sonic game ever... Anyway, I really like Sonic 2 and CD. I actually never finished Sonic 1, lol. I'm also going to toss the first Sonic Adventure into this, and before you kill me, let me defend myself. I know it really has nothing to do with the old-school 2D sonics from a gameplay perspective, but I just had so damned much fun with it. Nothing in that genre had put a grin on my face that big since Mario 64. I still replay it all the time to this day, and I uphold that SA2 wasn't as good. I sorta liked the slower exploratory parts....and I was actually one of those dorks who was messing around with his Chao on the VMU in class on 9/10/99 :-D I don't think I could bring myself to give it the nod OVER Sonic 2 or CD, but I'll put it in the same sentence with them.
Ugghhh, why did you have to remind me about that game!? It was so goddamn annoying, and makes the SMS Sonic 1 look like some sort of amazing masterpiece. I could never get past like the third zone, either, and that's assuming I hadn't already got annoyed and turned it off by then.
I'd have to go with Sonic 2 since it was the first sonic game I everp layed. Followed by Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, then Sonic CD, then Knuckles Chaotix(Does this count as a Sonic game? ;-) ), and finally Sonic 1. Does anyone know where I can hear/get a hold of the JP/PAL soundtrack to Sonic CD?
LOL what! Surely its the same as Sonic 2 on Master System?...........OK, it wasnt as good as the great original on sms/GG, but the hang glider part is one of sweetest gaming memories, it took some skill to do. Each to their own heh. Sonic Adventure was great imo too.
