I'm interested in buying a PSP, pretty much for the same reason I bought a GP2X that's currently underpowered for my needs, but which version is the best, considering I'd like to use homebrew (etc)?

And, if I need a specific firmware version, could I buy a different version and upgrade/downgrade myself?

I tried to search for a thread, but didn't find one. Grateful for a friendly direction if such a thread exists.

The first model is just fine. then the 2nd model.

Like with ALL Playstation products the more recent you get the worse the quality.

Yeah, I mean who wants a better screen, reduced load times via UMD caching, a built in microphone, and video out?

2000 are the best atm (slim, not the new 3000 bright).

2000 has vid out, is hackable, has the best screen of the 3, better d-pad then the fat, more comfortable to play on, better loading times, skype support, and few others.

Really i have a 2000 & 1000, I vastly prefer playing on my 2000. At first it was odd but after sometime I don't think I could live without it.

BTW, if you buy a 2000, Don't buy the madden bundle as it has a new cpu thats not hacked yet. So you might be stuck Homebrewless for a while.

    There's still the better screen.

I'm happy with my first version PSP (I also play a lot of homebrew, emulators ect.), but the second version has a much better screen and feels better in your hands (lighter, metallic surface with some versions). I have not had the chance to try the third version, but so far I'd always prefer the second over my own first release PSP.

Just get one that's still hackable so you can run descent stuff on it like emulators and such which is basicly any version except the new 3000 series

Datel have released a battery that can put the 3000 series into Service Mode for firmware flashing fun. Lite Blue Tool

No no no no no, Datels battery pretty much does crap as the service mode is not the problem at hand. The problem is the new CPU which beefs up security on the IPL & preIPL. Untill that is hacked the battery is worthless and even once the IPL got hacked, dark_alex would have given away for free the software required to make a new service battery.

Datel is just trying to sell something on false info. I really despise them as in the past they have ripped off DAs work for their own profit.

    So fuck datel

Are you kidding me? If you switch battery you can switch between regular PSP firmware and service mode where you can boot ISO's, emulators, etc?

2000 model is your best bet (the second version of the PSP hardware). Ignore what GoH says.

When I said 2nd Model I meant the first version of the slim BUT I still prefer the original model the Slim feels like it's going to slip out of my hands or break apart in them.

I agree with the 2000 model. It is the best PSP model. It's hackable, more RAM for homebrew than the 1000 (64 opposed to 32) and doesn't have a nasty screen/unhackable problems that the 3000 apparently has.

Negative. Thats not how it works.

Service mode (which is enabled via a special batter, most old retail batteries for the first psp can be reprogramed to service mode) enables a PSP to boot an IPL off the memory stick that allows it reformat the flash chip and install a fresh version of the firmware.

Hackers found out this exploit (throught an error by a repair place sending back the custom ipl on a memory stick used to fix the unit) and wrote a replacement ipl that boots the psp and installs custom firmware into the flash chip.

Prior to this method one would need a game with a firmware exploit or firmware 1.5 to install custom firmware onto the system.

Custom firmware is a modified firmware that allows a PSP to have a modern firmware while still being allowed to run unsigned apps on the memory stick. As well allow one to play ripped games from their memory stick (if you're gonna pirate psp games, you deserve a swift kick to the nuts).

Fuck them indeed. There's me thinking that this would allow me to put custom firmware on the 3000 model. Cheeky gits.

So the 3000 and later models of the 2000 are completely unhackable, yes?

Ta very much for the info.

Wash the vaseline off before playing, that'd be my advice.

Yep...2000 is the way to go. I made a service battery using a very sharp kitchen knife. Within 10 mins I had custom firmware installed.

However some models of the 2000 have TA-081 motherboards which can't be hacked. There isn't really anyway to find out what your motherboard is unless you look to ebay for a prehacked psp.
