For many years when people asked me what my favourite game was, I couldn't really answer, either I gave the title of a game I'd be currently playing or I'd say "well, it depends really..." and then talk about a few games. Lately I've been playing a game, showing it to my 8yo little sister and helping her play it too. I'd been playing it since I was a kid and even when I started playing it again three years ago, I remembered most parts by reflex even though the memories themselves had seemingly faded away. Since then it's the game I found I have been coming back over and over despite knowing it better than my own pockets, and the more I play it, the more fun I'm having. That game is Mega Man 4. It stays fun to me, something which no other game has done. even Mortal Kombat 2 which arguably is the game I'm the most skilled at grows boring after a while. So what would be your most definitive game? the one you just keep coming back to? the one that never bores you?
Right now it's Final Fantasy X, but that will probably later change to half life 2 as that is the next game I'm working on. Then it will probably be something in the older sonic series, then Halo 2. At least thats how i see winter starting out.
The one that never bores me, and never will : Tony Hawk's pro Skater 2 (DC or PSX, prefer DC, not n64!) My favorite "1st playthrough" : Half-Life (a revelation at the time) My recent favorite : The Last of Us (quite fantastic gameplay/story)
final fantasy x is a very good game, but has no replay factor, once you finish the story. I'm currently playing Zelda: Spirit Tracks, but a game I usually play from time to time is Zelda: Majora's Mask. All puzzles and side-quests in the game always stuck me for a long, long time, playing and trying to get all the masks. Not to mention the temples, which are also very good.
For me: Streets of Rage 2. Play it all the time. The feel, sound, levels, graphics, controls, love everything about it. It does sometimes get boring because i've been through it probably a thousand times. Wish something modern came close to it in the co-op beat'em up genre.
My most definitive game might be Katamari Damashii. However, I call it my definitive game not because I can play it and not be bored, but because it is perfect to me in the sense that I never have to play it again. I probably won't. There's no need to. Ikaruga comes close to KataDama in this regard. I've probably logged the most hours into Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. I can go a long time without playing that game and but when I pick it up again, Makoto's execution comes back to me like riding a bike.
For the game that I did everything there was to do, and had a blast doing it was Diablo II. I played that for 8 years. I think about it from time to time and I would try it again if it weren't just a different age. For the game that is my favorite and I still play on occasion, that would be Quake 3.
It's almost impossible for me to say, but one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had was the Resident Evil remake on Gamecube. It's one of the few games I've ever played that I consider to be truly perfect. Still, I've replayed it pretty much as many times as I possibly can, so... I'm not sure I'd call it my favorite game anymore. However, it did have a surprising amount of replay value.
Good to see someone else loves this game, too! Even though the menu/select theme is a little corny now, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 is probably more balanced/polished, Third Strike just kept me coming back. I prefer it to IV, although I think if I had the time to practice IV, maybe I would convert. Seems like everyone else has.
Ikaruga - not only did it define my hobby to how I pursue it today (arcade/japan-focused), I also enjoy the game very much and played it for hundreds of hours until I comprehensively understood it. A piece of art!
I never played much Alpha 3, but judging from some of the japanese videos ive seen wasn't V-ism like one of the most broken mechanics ever?
Probably Shenmue 1. Perhaps it wasn't the most action-packed game, but there was something alluring about its graphics and atmosphere that really resonated with me. I always look back fondly when I think about the day that I bought it and fired it up for the first time.
I'm an old school X-ism person, but V-ism was like Alpha 2. Don't remember it being broken, just that I always lost to talented V-ismers. I had a friend who would say Castlevania: SotN is basically Super Metroid 2.
V-ismer... *tch* Also, your friend is understanding of the obvious. C:SOTN is definitely Super Metroidy, with a leveling up function & a huge equipment selection to boot. It is definitely in my top 10 favorite games, most likely because it is so Super Metroid in practice, but mainly because it is a great game that is catered to on its own merits. That may be hard to understand, but I mean that it defined its own gameplay, then it was catered to based off what made it fun. And what SM fan could see the Castlelvania map and not instantly think of the Nintendo classic?
Agreed, though Sonic 3 & Knuckles is more polished, 2 has more nostalgia for me. However, if we're talking sheer replay value, it would probably be a toss up between NHL 95, Marvel vs Capcom 2 (DC), and one of any number of racing games.
