I picked up this xbox at a good will for $9.99. There seems to be no modding all stickers are in place. The black jewel I have never seen on a U.S. model I know they exist in Japan but with a smoke case. I called 1800 4 my xbox they told me they no longer service the original xbox so they had no answers if this was indeed a special edition. Any help would be appreciated.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably just a mod. There's no need to open the Xbox to remove the jewel and repaint it. Once I expanded the picture I saw what appears to be some wear around the rim of the jewel, which would indicate that it's been removed before. The blank serial sticker is a little strange but it's also possible that the ink just rubbed off over time (like mine have).
the barcode and number are printed on the clear layer of the serial number sticker, peel that layer off (the top layer) and you'll be left with a blank sticker. The same label type is used on cold food packaging, ice creme, milk bottles and so on. Still looks cool none the less
Does it have the serial number sticker on it or did you block it out? All retails had a MFR date and serial number sticker on the bottom. Would be interested to know the MFR date. If it's just a white sticker then I'd guess it's some kind of prototype or dev unit. What dash does it boot to?
If you take a hair dryer to a retail unit, it will have a plain sticker under the serial sticker. It has UL markings, which a proto would not. Would like to see the dash.
