What's the deal with "swag"?

Since when it stopped being about free stuff you got at launch and press events and it became some dumb hiphop slang?

Honest question, I missed the "transition" if that ever happened...

I think it's an inadvertent hijacking. In that context, 'swag' is usually short for swagger, I think.
