Back on topic: I recall the word 'swag' to mean freebies or competition prizes since the early 90s, long before it's latest hip-hop resurgence - for example 'swag bag' being a bag of free goods that were given to you for publicity. It isn't a new term, and I'm only guessing it's based on the concept of leaving an event with goods you don't feel you deserve.
