WOOO HOOO Tekken Tag 2 finally arrived today. I pop it open and see a code I though Oh this must be more pre order stuff. NOPE it was an online pass. I do not remember nor do I ever recall hearing ANYWHERE that Tekken Tag 2 would be getting an Online pass.

And though I bought the game new I was quite pissed off.

So this got me thinking... for us old timers that had to play the game to unlock things what's worse, Not telling anyone your game has an online pass, or hiding DLC on the disc and charging a new game for that content.

    OK GO.

    Online passes are old news.

PC gamers have been done for these for well over a decade.

EA Games have been doing this to console gamers for the last few years too.

It was only a matter of time before the rest of the industry caught up, so where is the shock coming from?

Pretty much. I mean yeah I got the game new but the fact that online pass isn't even being advertised is really infuriating. We as gamers have the right to know if we're going to have to pay extra to play online or not.

It's the fact that nobody said ANYTHING about online Pass in Tekken Tag 2. Not 1 utterance of it. No New report saying Tekken Tag 2 will have online pass, no This game has online pass on the box NOTHING.

I didn't even know about it until I opened the game up and saw the piece of paper and even then the code wasn't that obvious.

If this bullshit keeps up I'm done.

PC gamers are either used to being fucked over with crappy piracy prevention methods or they just download everything for free.

Both are pretty bad, but I'd say on-disc DLC is probably worse. The reason why is that online functionalities on games die with the console (such as original Xbox and PS2 online play), but locked content on disc gets stuck forever, and in some cases (such as 'Street Fighter x Tekken' where characters exclusive to the PS3 version were found on the Xbox 360 disc, and could not be unlocked without hacking it).

However, there are several examples where people have gotten up in arms over 'on-disc' DLC only for it turn out to be character models used for online play (but not actually playable code). I recall hearing that was the issue with Mass Effect 3 and character models, only for it turn out to not have any of the gameplay code required to play the extra levels - because the models were completed before the DLC was).

Essentially, online play sucks because it is preventing people from buying a complete game second-hand, and on-disc DLC sucks because once the service dies, the content dies with it (leaving you relying on hacked versions).

Which is why I'm thinking of sitting the next gen out.

That is why I buy game long after their release and when they release a game of the year or what ever they call it with the DLC include in the disc. Like Mortal Kombat Komplete or Oblivion game of the year.

I think online play is overrated, at least for non-fps games.

The GOTY edition does have the DLC packs on a separate disc, no online connection needed.

I'd say on disc DLC, in fact DLC in general, because as mentioned when the next console generations come along and the current online services go offline everything is lost. Plus DLC seems to be becoming an excuse to shove an incomplete game out there and they'll charge you for the ending later.

Mortal Kombat was like this, but I believe it was to stop people from importing it here since it was banned. Though, DLC blows anyway unless it they're extensions or expansions sure, but 3 extra characters and two new weapons, or cars? Get real. Not only can you skip these, but some games require you to download them so you can play online with the other money wasters. I've never liked DownloadableContent or DISCLOCKED content haha, but it's harsh on all loyal customers... Saying piracy is part of it is an excuse, how many times has stuff been ported or hacked into older versions?

Also this all reminds me of the days of "Most Wanted" and "Most Wanted Black Edition" all the extra features were on the standard edition, just the files were named differently in order to hide them from standard users. I believe some teenager found this out, I can't remember it was ages ago. Still it's similar to what's happening today.

Gaming has gone Hollywood. The content is getting more and more ME TOO and less creative. Companies are blaming the consumer and rather than try something new, they punish the consumer with DLC and online passes and blame US for the fact that profits are down.

I'd file an FTC complaint...it I knew it would work.

Both bad but new content already on disc unlocked with a code that's taking the piss and a bit messy, there are So much DLCs out there that I don't really follow anymore. I just want to buy a disc or an app and play and don't bother about extensions to that game. Not bothered about online passes either especially for FPS bit fed up with them online anyway, same thing, different graphics, be gone FPSs!!!

Tekken Tag 2 does both. Online pass and DLC already on disc. I don't like any of those. Online pass is a joke, specially for EA games. They love to switch off servers asap and the whole online pass help them to do this. DLC on disc is a slap in the face of the consumer.

Because of these, I decided not to buy some games i wanted like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. Some game companies are on my black list. Since DiRT3, i'll never buy a codemasters product on release. Plus i avoid EA and Capcom games as much as i can.

Which is why I made this thread, At least Namco isn't charging for the DLC. Maybe it's their way of recreating the time release from the arcades, but it's still bullshit. For such a MEH online mode, Online Pass is also a heaping pile of Bullshit.

Lucky for them it's an awesome game...or I'd be busting some skulls.

This is a bit of a morality question, but let's assume a company puts on-disc DLC into their game, would it be illegal for me to hack the game and unlock the content my self? Presumably they've sold me the disc and all the software contained on the disc is now mine. I guess this falls under the same sort of grey area issue as hacking a consoles firmware, where the question is really down to who actually owns what between you or the company. Is hacking a games on-disc DLC piracy? It's such a muddy area it's hard to know just what is right or wrong, taking what's rightfully yours or being charged for something you've already been sold.

I think at some point it will be. This gen is really the first where people put serious money into DLC so if MS or Sony don't play their cards right when they cut the power on PS3 and 360 services someone will file a suit that will go class action.
