Welcome to the club :smt023 This is why I'm heading into another field while working part-time for myself, much like AntiPasta. Stay positive though, as things eventually pick up. Do you mind if I ask how much you're looking at per hour? 25% is a pretty large cut. I have no idea of the IT market other than what's in Canada. Of course, my particular job demands nearly twice in the U.S. what I'm currently making, but I've learned not to cry about it. Lack of education hurts when trying to move anywhere. But employers looking for reliable people younger than 24? Holy shit, that's pretty scary..

Including IT, there's quite a diverse crowd here!

Right now, I am still living at home in Arkansas. However, once I graduate from High School this year, I will be going off to college. Currently I have a part time job on the Student line at a factory. I am here because I choose to be here. I used to hate Arkansas, but over the years I have started liking it.

I hate school, but I have to go. Blah. School can suck my c*ck.

Other than that, I sell some shit to buy some shit and it all evens out, pretty good set-up I'd say.

  6. Currently 4th year in college in the middle of an unmotivated stretch that's lasted since my senior year in high school, possibly earlier. I'm happy if I pass more classes than I fail each term. Currently working towards an Art major with emphasis on digital media/3d modelling, but I realized a few weeks back that I've only taken about 3 classes that actually specialize in that sort of thing. Looking into getting a minor in Creative Writing, as that's something I've been interested in since about the 7th grade, but it's mainly for shits and giggles, as I've neither the skill nor motivation to make something useful from it. I'm currently all set to graduate at some point next year, but that seems deceptively soon considering what I feel like I've accomplished. I've actually got no idea what I'm going to do when I graduate - my original idea was going into the game industry as an artist, but considering my experience and skills, it seems a laughable goal indeed. Whatever I do after school, it had better pay well, as I've got something close to $10,000 to work off when I get out.

I might be able to weasel my way into a study abroad program in Japan for October 2005 - March of 2006, something I've been wanting to do since my first year of college, but I'm not sure where that would put me with graduation. This is if I even get accepted.

I really have no clue what I want to be doing right now, but it just seems that school is currently a black hole that swallows time and money and lets very little out in terms of things I'll use afterwards. If I do the study abroad thing, it will be a great change of scenery. I suppose if I could find a decent full time job anywhere I'd just say hell with school, but I have a hard enough time getting hired for menial tasks like store clerk, much less something with a good income without a college degree.

Something needs to happen differently, but I can't afford a change.

I'm kinda in the same cross road too. I'm going for a CS, however, I might go for a liter CS degree known as Computer Information Technology, yet I'm still debating if I should do a 180degree turn on this whole thing and go for something like humanities or philosophy major. Thing is though you guys. If you go for degrees like Art, literature, etc. Go for a Masters degree. That way you can get a job as a professor teaching a subject at a college. I'm taking this humanities class that sparked this revelation I'm having. I dont know if its good or not. I don't see myself in a cubicle 10 years from now sitting in front of a desk. I don't want that unless I'm highly obligated too. This summer, I'll find out if the path I'm heading is the right path. Thing you gotta understand GSL is that you have to find something that will let you do the things you want, not do what you want to do for a living becuase that is much harder and a lot of people fail at that. Find something thats easy for you to do, it doesnt have to be somethin you really like doing, but it's easy and it pays well and the environment is great to where you can do the things you love out of "work". I'm trying to find that, and I'm skeptical to think that a CS degree is my path for that right now. Hell, I really never sat down and actually programmed out of my own free will. This summer I'm going to do that, I will do it. And from that experience I'll see if CS degree is the right path. If not, then I might go somewhere that has a good job market and can enable me to do what I like doing.

I'm taking a class that is making me rethink all of this. For the first time in a long time I'm motivated to read books because of this class. It inspired me to write, read, and explore. The first degree I ever thought of pursuing was Architecture, and I thought about doing that, however, I'm afraid I would end up having to take out loans or something because I'm 20 and I've been getting free rides from Uncle Sam in paying for my college. It is something I can't count on anytime soon as I get older. We'll see once summer comes around.

BTW. I have a friend whos a freshmen in college. I think back in May 2003 he started to create his own maps in UT2k3 on his PC. September 2003 he got hired by this independent developer. December 2004, he got his first paycheck from them for $400. They were working on a $0 budget but they have a kick ass programmer and lead designer. ALso, my friend has gotten very good and all of this stuff he learned he taught himself not in college. He hates it, but cant leave because if he drops out he has to pay off the loans and he isn't making enough. That will change soon though since the company he's working with is starting to bring in money and he'll now be getting paid $1,000/month plus royalty bonuses. I guess what I'm trying to say is. Keep trying. Lie i fyou have to, but not too much, to land a job someplace that needs someone of your field of study. It doesn't have to be the game industry. You can go into advertising, web design, printing, etc. Also, work on your skill outside of the class. I have yet to do this and this summer is my last chance in finding out if I can do it.

IT's getting late and I'm starting to loose it. I just wish you luck.

Aww, the world needs more CS students, less CIT!

I should be in school now but I'm not.. I'm just sitting at home halfassedly trying to get a shit $8 job. I'm looking for the strength to go back to school in the fall/next year but I'm pretty damn lazy now. I hope to find the strength to go to a local technical community college (for EECS) and transfer to a more prestigious school after I get a weakass AA.

Up to the age of 23 people get payed minimum youth wages.. after 23 you get normal wages which makes a whole lot of difference.
The problem with finding IT jobs here in holland comes largly thanks to the IT hype of the late '90's where companies hired anybody who could turn on a computer as an IT-er with hughe salaries.cars, laptops and mobile phones.

That al blew 3-4 years back making companies rethink what they wanted so now adays they only want people with lots of paperwork on board preferable 3+ years expenrience and they can't be any older then 25 unless they are really specialized.

I could get a job in the IT if i could afford to take a few MSCE courses but seeing as they are 10000+ euro's per course there is little chance of that happening.

I got all you fools beat. I work at fucking Starbucks. I live with my brother in a shitty two bedroom apartment that we pay waaayyy to much for ($1250 a month. And the weight machine has been busted for the last six months.) who while he works hard and makes more money than me, always seems to be broke and smokes all my fucking cigarettes when I'm not looking.

I own two cars but can't sell the other one becasue my Mom uses it, becasue some asshole stole her identity and fucked up her credit so bad she can't get an auto loan for another three years (then the 7 years will be up.)

The girl I love, while she is not going to marry the other guy, is currently living with him. Worse than that, she wants to be my friend (ugh!) but still throws out the signals, yet it's at the point where it's bad if I try to act on it. Goddammit, why is it when you finally meet someone and everything is perfect, there always seems to be some cosmic fucking obstacle that gets thrown in your way? I'm tired of living in a goddammed romance novel.

You guys bitch about school? Be lucky your ass went to a university. I JUST got my AA, after five years. I'm 28 now, have el ziltcho experience and half a degree. That's what happens when you drop out of school to "work," you end up working. And working. And working. Then suddenly you realise all you do is work and you're not getting anywhere. Shit, it would be a dream come true if all I had to do is go to school.

Still, all is not too bad in my life. I just got a piece in a gallery ("Snake goddess" pics here: http://hawanja.com/snakegoddess.htm ) which is actually for sale, so let's hope I can do some more shows. I'm going to give this being an artist thing a chance, and am also looking for another job (as a game tester, there's two places locally, THQ and some other PC game company, both pay about $14 an hour for Q&A.) Plus, the last year has been pretty profitable for me, finally paid off all my credit card debt (it's nice getting a payceck and like actually getting to spend/save some of it instead of automatically throwing it all away on bills for crap you bought years ago.)

So besides having a shitty no-carrer-type job, loser ass relatives, fucked up drug addict friends, a crappy living situation, and love life in the toilet with a confused girl who uses my emotions like some kind of self-torturing throw-rag, my life is pretty good.

Damn, that sucks. But you do live in LA, so that kinda explains the high rent.

Say, this probably sounds fuckin stupid, but what some of you could try is gather a bit of money and go to college in Germany... it's free and guaranteed to be an adventure (including the language barrier). My dad did the same in 1970 and a few years later he moved to Europe forever.

College is free in Germany? How would one go about doing that?

I don't want to spark any political discussion, but a socialist government with higher taxes has its benefits. The government actually pays for it. I'm not sure if that still works with students from outside the EU, though, but a friend of mine moved to Berlin to study physics because he couldnt be arsed to spend 1500e a year on tuition fees.

anti: they passed a law last week allowing districts to charge up too 500e / half year for studying, so i'd better expect to pay something like 1000 euros / year for studying in germany if starting in 2005.
