Why do you want to lock it? No third party BIOSes (which you'll need if you want LBA48 support) require a locked hard drive.

Flash the BIOS if the console is anything but a 1.6 or get a modchip (Needed if it's a 1.6) and use any HDD out there. All hacked BIOS revisions have LBA48 support to go beyond the 137GB mark and you can use up to a 2TB drive. Best part is you won't need to lock the HDD anymore. My stock BIOS only had LBA28 and thus didn't support the larger drives. The largest IDE drive ever made was only 750GB so if you plan to use a 1TB drive it's going to be SATA and thus you will need a IDE to SATA adapter. Look around the net to see what others have used that works.

Mine is a 1.6 xbox and doesn't have a flashed BIOS, so I can at least find a purchase a 750 from somewhere. Anyone know where? I really don't wanna flash anything.

    *EDIT*
I found a good tutorial that also mentions which adapters to buy for IDE to SATA.

Why does this thread show as having 4 posts but only 3 are visible? As of writing this I see OP, me and sonicdude. That's it.

Modchip, you won't be able to even use 1TB even if you were trying to use a softmod. The XBOX originally can't read any more than 137GB.

Well upon doing research, as of 2008, you can only use a 1TB max even with a softmod. Everyone says all you need is the SATA to IDE and a very specific brand of 1TB harddrive and then use nkpatcher 11 and partition F and G as 496GB pieces in 32KB clusters. HOWEVER, I'm still probably going to get a 750GB that's IDE and lockable so I don't have to try to hard and I can just have 1 partition instead of 2 (cause that's dumb). ANYWHO.

Does anyone know where to buy a 750GB that's usable in an original XBOX?

You're causing more headaches for yourself. You're best to just install a modchip...

Yes certainly I'd do a mod chip, I mean even if you used xboxhdm and made a perfect 1TB / 750GB HDD for it, the files for games and whatnot would get corrupted once it reached a amount of space and files would go missing, even on a softmod. Best route would be to try changing the bios the softmod uses but yea more headaches and not sure if it'll work as *mentioned*originally*the xbox BIOS cannot read nor see these files while the other bios loaded by the softmod does or not? Doesn't sound like a stable environment, I'd not be able to sleep well knowing the family media collection is tucked away in the xbox at that kind of situtation, I'd butcher up that 1.6 trying to find the tsop chip ( is it under the video chip?) and makin a project of flashing it if I were you or kick it to the curb and try your luck finding a 1.0-1.5 box to TSOP flash that way you won't need to get a chip or hassle with programming it etc...

    Best luck man!

You can drop a 2TB in with a TSOP flash or chip. You do have to set the sector size correctly, but it'll work.

The 1.6 has a maskrom, not a flashable chip.

Just get a damned modchip already and use 64K clusters when formatting the HDD with XBPartitioner. Then you can have a 2TB drive with no problems at all.

Mr.Sonicdude, I don't want to spend all of that kind of money. I'm surprised nobody has just told me what model of 750 to buy. I'm obviously okay with any risks I may be taking. I'd do a TSOP flash, but I've read EVERYWHERE that you can't on a 1.6 XBOX. So I just want to know what model of 750GB to buy.

It's because people who mod Xboxes with large drives just don't bother with v1.6 systems. Xboxes are dirt cheap. Buy a used v1.0 - v1.5 off Craigslist for $20, flash the TSOP and drop in a drive of choice. Done. Cheap and straightforward.

These days a used Xbox may well be cheaper than a mod chip. ;)

If you end up with a v1.6 system, just put it back up for resale and buy another.

True, but a modchip is cheaper than spending another $20.

But I agree with your point, especially for the non soldering of us. You can do the tsop write enable points with a conductive pen.

Thank you for pointing out that a different one may be cheaper. And, on top of that, way more accessible. I just wish I knew from the outside how to tell a difference, so I could meet someone from craigslist, see their XBOX and know whether it's worth the purchase or not. That way I could avoid purchasing and reselling boxes.

    Just check the MFG date.

    http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/XboxVersionTable

If it is 2003 or earlier you're 100% in the clear.

It it was made in 2004 or later, assume it is a 1.6 system.

You can still find v1.5s with a 2004 MFG date, but for someone just looking for a single system, better to err on the side of false positives.

Any kind of IDE HDD pretty much works. Higher RPMs*probably*are best as well. Not sure about satas with these adapters as I've never gone that route before.

What kinds of money? I bought a Xecuter 2.6 for $28 shipped. That's cheap by today's standards and it even has support for 128MB RAM once I get it for my 1.2. Even better is the fact most Xbox models go for under $30. So My recommendation is to sell the 1.6 for around $20 and by a 1.2 to 1.5 for maybe $30 or even less. TSOP flash it with the IND-BIOS if you plan to upgrade the RAM or Evox M8+ if leaving the RAM stock and you will have no problems with any model HDD ever. Just be wary of green model drives ans they may spin up too slowly for the BIOS to find the dashboard. Otherwise pretty much any other drive will work. Best part of the TSOP flash or modchip is you will no longer need to lock the HDD.
