I got shafted on my bonus after being lied to. The company can go and fuck themselves from now on. I was told all year I'd get a 160'000 yen bonus (which is still turd) and do you know what the bastards gave me? 48'000 F*ing yen. 48'000!!! I was so pissed off and gave them hell over it so they upped it with a massive apology. They only upped it to 68'000 yen. I have no respect at all for the company. I'm doing a half arsed job on everything now. Lies after lies and then the bonus rip off. A man can only accept so much shit from the company he works for.

    Yakumo

EDIT: what's most embarrassing is that my wife's bonus is 480'000 yen TWICE a year. And all the guys who live in the area I live in are getting 1 million to 2 million yen bonus TWICE a year as well. I need to get a new job.

Hands up who does a worthwhile and meaningful job? No-one? Figures :p

If I am lucky I get a few hundred quid bonus but I don't expect it and appreciate what I get. I personally rather get a pay rise then a bonus anyway.

    What's a bonus?

We just get pay rises - which are much better, because it increases overtime rate :)

Could it be... Could it be... That companies are more willing to shaft foreigners than pure bloods?

Haven't gotten a bonus for the last 4 years, and never had a increase since I started working here (6 years).

Literally the only reason I'm staying is because I get to see some interesting things from time to time, and it is actually something I enjoy.

Damn that blows man, you should really try and do that if you are really unhappy and i'm sure i'm not the only one who hopes that you would be able to find a company that will respect you for the work you do for them.

I did a very good job. I also attended all the stupid work "parties" and events even though I didn't want to. I did a very good job and this is how they repay me. F**k'em from now on. I'm sure they wouldn't have done that to a Japanese.

As for those saying it's not normal for them to get a bonus, well in Japan it is. It's part of the work culture. Some of the people I drink with get more in their bonus than my yearly annual income! I'd never tell t hem that though. They'd probably die of laughing their tits off at me. Still, then they'd know why I always decline their invitations to play golf.

My company stopped all bonus's 2 years ago and I haven't even had a pay rise in 3 years and they arn't doing overtime anymore, only thing that has increased is work load and stress.

I can't even leave because there just isn't any jobs around and the foreigners are more than happy to work all week for peanuts.

The guys who get the BIG bonus don't work in my company but yes, I know how much my colleagues get. I see some of their wage slips. Some , not many get less wages than otheres do each month even though the do pretty much the same job. This stinks but there's nothing they can do about it plus they don't know.

we dont get bonuses and my small IT team is getting seriously shit on at the moment, were 3 technicians that look after 400+ students, 200+ external students, 150+ staff, we had a manager and a development manager (big boss), they hired a programmer (who was given a wage that was £7,500 above ours) who quit after 2 weeks, i then got given her programming job (and i mean all of it) for no extra money and still have to do my normal job for no extra pay, then the manager quit and us 3 got a third of his job each as they arent replacing him due to money problems, so im doing 2 and a third jobs for the same money as one, they have also hired an extra animator at the same rate as the programmer, i worked on some projects that got some serious money for them last year, the IT boss and another high up guy got £3,000 Mac Airbooks, iPhones, iPads etc and i got an xbox game.....beat that for being shit on

its really pissing me off to be honest but am just glad of a job in these messed up times

I am a research scientist. No bonuses but I am not working for the money, though I certainly can't complain.

We don't generally get bonuses unless you:

    1. Earn it (File a patent, new hire referral, some significant company contribution, etc).

    2. Earn profits which will be shared among the employees based on your performance and contribution to the project. No profits = No bonus.

But we do get raises based on your performance ranking (compared to your peers) and market averages. But generally speaking, the pay matches the job your doing. You can't jump pay grades just by staying in your position for <XX> years. If you want a particular pay grade, you have to move into a job of that level.

It may not be as lucrative as getting huge bonuses and gifts like other companies, but it's definatly much less variable and more fair. You never really feel cheated out of anything; you get what you earn. Now dispite all that being said, I think Yakumo is still getting a pretty raw deal. I say that because even being in a company that pays based on your personal contribution, we still got bigger bonuses. Heck, we got free stocks just to celebrate a company milestone - Of which the value is worth almost the same as Yakumo's bonus. And we didn't need to do anything to get it. It was a freebee to everyone.

EDIT: Actually, I did a currency conversion from Japanese to Canadian and had no idea how far my estimate was off. Actually we got almost double what Yakumo got in bonus (for doing nothing). :-/ Sorry man!
