I get a bonus of one weeks pay each year, Which is about £180.. I'd rather have a Job which wasn't horrific.

 

15% of annual salary? That's way more than I have ever got! You must be kidding.

The way my "BONUS" is meant to work is twice a year i get some of the money that was meant to be my annual salary.

So basically they hold back your money and then give it to you supposedly as a "bonus".

But if the company does poorly because of some idiots that are on 5X more money than you then its tough luck.

The way it works is like this...

Say your annual salary is meant to be $40,000.
They hold back like $10,000 from your salary and give 80% of it in summer and 20% or so in winter.
However a nice disclaimer in the contract says "depending on company performance" blah blah

So effectively you take a pay CUT if they dont pay you the bonus!
Its not a real bonus as in..."well done here is some extra on top" its a "here is your money sir, you will thank us for keeping it for you"....that is IF you get it..

Ya, that's some messed up scheme. Talk about trying to cheat you out of your money. They might as well just say your annual salary is lower, and call the bonus "gravy". I guess they say it's part of your annual salary since it looks like the position is more lucrative than it actually "might" be.

 

Last year the bonus I got was 16.7%. It's only a yearly bonus but I got a 10.5% increase too which wasn't bad. If I get the same this year then I'm well pleased. Still doing IT Support but doing networking courses and my boss has offered to put me on programming courses - which I'm not 100% set on as I like doing hands-on and system building.

 

You can opt out I believe but they would make you a contract worker and more likely make you redundant!

 

While I do see Yakumo's predicament as one that would set me ablaze in igneous rage, and rightly so, the third world gets working people a few angry minutes from an aneurysm.

Teachers (Lecturers and professors in college and high-school level institutions) in my country don't even get paid vacation.

(My sister teaches Junior high, and she does get paid vacation. But I'd rather give myself a circumcision using only my teeth than deal with Junior High kids)

Also, they can tell you like two days before the class begins that your class won't be opening. So you don't get paid. Or you're suggested, "suggested", to go to work-meetings on unpaid free time, while you're not getting paid because your class didn't open. And obviously, if you don't go, you don't get more classes.
Notice you don't get "fired" - so there's no severance pay. You simply keep getting zero hours to work, while you're still "considered".

And then, they give your tenured contract to friends of politicians or whomever seems to be kissing ass and having contacts. Nice.

Bonus. Ha.

(Also, pay for most teachers goes from 6 to 10 dollars an hour. For 10 dollars an hour, you need at least a master's degree, though)

At least, many of the teachers of one government university where I study ARE geting indefinite tenure this year, and that does seem to include me last time I checked. Hard to know, when your union sells out, and the man in charge of the university is fired for GIVING AWAY EMPLOYEE'S CHRISTMAS PAYCHECKS (Bonus?) to political friends for over 4 years. At least our current union has a little bit of interest for workers, and we got some checks back for last year.

Oh, and a Polo shirt. There's always that.

It sounds like Teachers in Mexico have it hard. That can't be good for the future of the country. An under paid teacher isn't going to give a shit about their job resulting in poor education.

 

It's kind of sad. You move right across the boarder to the US and you'd make like double what your making now (or more). To top it off, you actually want to work. Not like all these people who just collect government checks.

 

Overpaid teachers in the UK don't give a shit either.

This, a lot of times this.

The university where I studied is very, VERY expensive (I had a scholarship up to my Master's degree. I wouldn't be able to afford such a school, even paying less than half tuition). It used to be that teachers had authority and students had to do the work.

Now, though, it's just children of politicians and CEOs doing whatever the fuck they want, and having teachers fired for whatever reason. (Like this genius anthropologist that taught Cultural History, and was fired for mentioning religions other than Catholicism, as that offended a kid from a very religiou$ background - or this one International Communication teacher, first foreign female to get a doctorate from Tokyo University - I shit you not, who got fired because the popular kids complained that she "made them read too much")

The half that do all the studying and working generally have financial aid, and are monitored and pressured within an inch of their lives. I was there many years, and it was fucking appalling. I survived, sure. But many don't make it.

I mean, they made all assignments "Teamwork" so that people with scholarships have to do all the work while the ones who pay do nothing, and don't get punished. I had team mates tell me "well, I could pay for another semester, but if you fail, it's bye-bye diploma, so go get the work done." and ... well, it was actually true, unfortunately. You tell instructors, and they have their hands tied. You cannot fail someone who has contacts.

It's much worse now than it was when I went there, but I did kick a rich and lazy popular kid off my team in Quantitative Research class (like 8, 9 years ago, I guess) and he still passed the class somehow, without turning in a final assignment worth like 40 percent of the grade. How? I $ure have no idea.

I'd rather stay at my underpaid, underrepresented job, than have no authority as a teacher for brats (though the pay IS pretty good, I've heard) that will have me fired as soon as I kick someone out of class (which I'm known to do, rather harshly, too).

I'm underpaid and very under-utilised, but at least they still let me do my job.

In short - universities in Mexico suck because of the same practices that make schools in the UK suck. Only a little bit different.

My maths teacher In year 9 and 10 had a golden rule. She'd explain the work. If you asked her to explain it and didn't understand? You hadn't been listening and she didn't bother re-explaining it.

Year 11 comes around. New management in maths department. That teacher gets relegated to time tabling sixth form and I end up with a teacher that explained things more thoroughly. As a result of working hard in my spare time after actually knowing the things I did 3 years work in 2 or 3 months and got 170/200 - highest in my year.

In all seriousness well done, sadly your former teacher is now becoming all too common in High Schools. Gone are the days of nurturing bright kids and spending an extra few minutes with the ones who don't grasp things first time and it's a crying shame. The reason for this? Two words: ''National Curriculum''

In an ideal world all children would learn at the same level but as we know, this isn't the case. Because of this we now have a standardised education policy that works in 2 ways:

1 - Makes thick as pigshit teachers look competent
2 - Stops the dummy kids from bringing down class or school averages because the brighter ones help boost the stats.

Standardised education is the worst practical joke that has ever been played on our school system, since its introduction school grades have gone through the roof. The number of kids leaving school these days with 9 or more A* G.C.S.E's is bordering on the laughable. Most kids leaving secondary education today with a C level pass would have either just scraped a E or just plain failed before the introduction of the NC. For the most part these G.C.S.E certificates are useless now because nearly every school-leaver has an armful of them and there's now no way of telling academically who is genuinely bright and clever from the kids who did nothing but take in everything parrot-fashion without necessarily understanding what they were being told.

I don't mean to appear to be shitting on anyone's achievements past present or future, just giving my opinion as a frustrated parent who has seen his kids being failed by poor teachers and when I've complained to either teachers or heads of year etc I've had the cunts trying to fob me off with the excuse that what they're doing is within national guidelines and if my children keep on asking questions about things not covered they should aim those questions at me and I should fill in the blanks for them. I shit you not.

 

I agree with you Consumed. It's not nice to say but my sister (now 18, I'm 35) left school with more A grade GCSEs than I did even though she is nowhere near as cleaver. Of course I don't say anything to her, that would be cruel but it is hard proof that tests and exams are a hell of a lot easier than they used to be.
