I never really noticed this the first time I was here. Singapore is a peaceful place. Everyone gets on with each other. Now that's not so amazing until you concider that the population of Singapore is made up of four ethnic groups. There's Chinese, Mongolian, Indian and Muslim (sp). So why is it that all these people live in peace without any of that Holly war crap when western cultures can't? makes you think doesn't it. Yakumo
Personally i wouldn't want to live in singapore, they have the most rediculous laws for example until recently you could go to jail for throwing gum on the street :smt009 People tolerate eachother there because the laws of the counrty are so insainly harsh that people wouldn't even dare. Thats not peacefull that more of a dictatorship.
Because if you step out of line in Singapore you get your ass handed to you so bad you never think about doing it again. Would like to visit maybe I but wouldn't want to live there.
just a few examples of singapore law i found on the internet: You get fined for not flushing the public toilet You can go to jail for kissing in public Gay people showing any form of affection (holding hands, kissing and so on) in public can go to jail I mean that's no free counrty in my book and far from perfect imho.
Many people assume dictatorship is a bad thing. Singapore is an example of doing a good job. If only they would turn to communist/socialst ways they would show the world how it should be done. There is 100% no such thing as a free country - the very word free means without any ties or constraints - countries have laws which are restrictions so they are never free. The only difference between countries is not if you are free or not,as you never are free, but how restricted you are! There is nothing wrong with a harsh sentence for commiting a crime - Singapore proves this by the fact they have much less of it. Granted they have some shitty laws, but which country doesn't? Some of Singapores crappy laws ... http://www.dumblaws.com/laws.php?site=laws&cid=155
I'd rather live here in holland, democracy = more freedom not binding people's lives down to insaine laws and communistic dictatorship. Sure we have laws here as well but none that take every simple thing in life like holding hands or kissing a person in public and making them a crime.
True, they do have far too many really stupid laws (that I never knew about until LeGIt posted that link) which they don't really need such as The sale of gum is prohibited. All they need to do is change that to "No littering" simple. The thing is though that you have to be tough. In the UK you can get away with steeling a car. What happens? You do a few weeks comunity service. Oh, fucking yippy. Big hand for law and order. That isn't going to stop them from stealing another car. The Law in the UK is a joke at times. Yakumo
??? Why would they want to do that? Instead of just some people being poor they would have everyone living in equally shitty conditions.
i don't think singapore could be a model to our world. going to jail because you love someone...? and you say this is peaceful? peace is love!
i would rather live in The Netherlands and in Denmark(where i am living) than living in Singapore sorry for this outrage but Yakumo are you completely out of your mind ? :angry or what ? even Japan have better laws than Sing a fucking pore and sorry i am just a bit shocked
I think many people here overlooked the fact that Yakumo is the only one in this topic who has actually been to Singapore. The rest of us is only exposing our opinions based on what we've read/heard. Choosing only some part of the real info can make anything looks extremely good or extremely bad. That's how politicians/TV channels/newspaper manipulate some people. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Singapore is as good as Yakumo described, but I prefer to see it with my own eyes
I know a lot of people from Singapore, as I talk w/ them on the phone pretty regularly for work. Singlish is hard to understand when they get excited... I could never live there.
i know people that live here too. and imo, every places where you can't kiss someone whitout going to jail isn't a model to the world... like i've said earlier : i don't think singapore could be a model to our world. going to jail because you love someone...? and you say this is peaceful? peace is love!
Because in singapore if you spit on the ground they'll give you lashes. That would motivate ANYONE, and would have people in fear of drooling.
LeGIt makes some very valid points, though no, I definitely do not agree with communism or dictatorship in any sense - at the same time, cahaz et al, don't fool yourself into thinking our so-called 'democracies' are free and 'democratic'. They are anything but. Power is in the hands of the same who hold it in other overtly oppressive nationsm, but are far more cover about it and thus far more successful in manipulating the populace. The entire 'Western' world is a shining example of this. Look how easily people umped to judge another nation they have no experience of here alone. As far as I'm concerned, stupid little laws like jail for chewing gum are something I'd take over the masses of utterly inhumane clauses and laws enshrined in the US Patriot Act and its clones the Canadian, Uk, and French 'Anti-Terror' legislations.
