Why do people hate 3do so much?

Afterall it started the revolution...or evolution I should say to 3d gaming.

    Because...

Because it looked like a giant black wedding cake and had games that tried to survive on the sole fact that they were "3D" and therefore superior. 3D was too much of a fad at the time. Mostly really lame American developers.

IMO. Strong opinion but I don't mean to upset anyone.

(edit : that thin flat panasonic one looked nice...)

    I don't hate it.

It had some good games like Need for Speed, Road Rash, Wing Commander,... and probably others i forgot.

The problem is that it was too expensive, and most of it's games weren't as fun as the 16-bit games at that time.

3DO was a very powerful system, I don't think anyone hates it. It's fairly easy however to hate the majority of the software, especially US developed games.

I agree with Kyuusaku on this one. The 3DO it's self wasn't that bad. Just the software for it was mostly crap. There were some good titles however and it is the original home to Warp's D and also has Konami's Policenauts.

I also don't hate 3DO. I actually had a lot of fun playing Return Fire and Theme Park on a FZ-1 quite some time ago.
And I think that the idea of pluging controllers on one another is brilliant, not to mention that each controller has its own headphone jack.

Here in holland it was almost impossible to buy, if you did find it it was like 400 euro's and 99% of all games on the system suck balls and have loading times so long you can get a cup of coffee before it's done.

For me its not just 3DO i hate, it represents to me a period in time when the market was flooded with shit consoles (3DO, CDI, CD32 & jaguar) most of them proclaiming multimedia was the way ahead. Which in reality meant nearly all crappy fmv with very little game.

All of them releasing games that didn't excite or interest me in the slightest. What made it worse was all the games mags bleating on how 3D & multimedia was the future of gaming. Haha i still remember the pull out special C&VG giving really crappy reasons like fmv is the way of the future & why we should all dump our snes'es & megadrives.

I was perfectly happy with my 8 & 16bits & refused to have these overpriced black monstrosoties? (sp) forced upon me in the name of progress.

Ok im over with my rant Raaaargh :smt023

"Multimedia" - I remember that word! :-D I also remember when a PC with a CD-ROM drive and sound card was deemed a "Multimedia PC".

I don't really have anything against the 3D) system as I've never played one, so I'm not really in a position to give an opinion that matters. But I do have something against 3DO themselves for making those atrocities to mankind that where the Army Men series of games.

I always had and still have this simple but true rule.

    Multimedia = Shit
    Interactive = Shit

So if you ever see a product or a company with one of those two words in the title then you know it = Shit :smt033

    LOL hate!??

It's the system I have most interest in atm, i'm a sukka for fmv titles, i do revel in shit however.

PS, I like Amiga. That whole period of US/Euro 3DO, Jaguar, CD32 etc is really quite obscurely interesting.

    Japanese gaming is so passe

I kinda agree with you yes. Also, the system's Street Fighter game is pretty good.

It was £600 when it came out here and all the games (excluding maybe 3) sucked balls. Really, too bad to even play, ball sucking badness.

    I hate 3DO software.

BTW, what strikes me as odd is that the 3DO was released here somewhere in 1995... possibly even after the Saturn, I'm not sure. But wasnt it released in the US a long time before? Also, I have NEVER EVER seen any 3DO stuff on sale in this country, the only 3DO's on ebay.nl are imports. Guess I'm sitting on a goldmine with my 200 yen FZ-10 from Hard Off :-D

Yeah, 3DO came out in late 1994 in the USA, but retailed at frist for like $799! Price didn't come down to something reasonable until the FZ-10 came out like two years later, but by then the PS1 had already taken over.

If I remember correctly, the reason why 3DO has such a bad rap is becasue there was like this army of 3DO fanboys who used to write into the game mags complaining everytime they gave a bad score to a 3DO game. Kind of like bb trolls before the internet took off. People would have flamewars in the letters collum of EGM over 3DO and why it's the best/sucks ass.

I got mine free though (he he he.) My Mom used to work for Verizon and has this catalog where you can order electronics (for points aquired through sales,) so that's how I got all my game consoles when I was a kid.

Most of the games blow monkey chunks, but a few aren't bad:

    Ballz director's cut

    Star Control II

    Super Street Fighter 2 turbo

Samurai Showdown (very sweet, very, very close to the Neo geo version)

Theme Park is also very challenging :smt023
