Yeah, well, that's what happens when you're part of an empire.

I know a lot of people say that as in "evil empire" or whatever (the kind of people who listen to Rage agaisnt the machine and suddenly turn into activists.) I say it not because of any spite towards my country, which I love, but becasue it's true.

The fact is that the United States, with it's massive geo-political, economical, and military influence (in the form of God knows how many military bases around the world) is an empire in everything but name only. Countries like Japan are lucky in the sense that they do not have to spend the money to arm or train standing armies as they recive the protection of the United States (unlucky as to when the relationship steps on the host countrie's soverginty, as in this helicopter crash.)

You see counties in Western Europe that also have little in the way of Military power that have the same kind of relationship. This essentially frees up the economies of these countries to concentrate on other things (like providing for the general welfare of it's citizens, so you have situations like Germany where many complain of a welfare state.) You notice that here in the U.S.A., even though our economy is the size of most of Eurpoe's put together, we don't enjoy the same type of social services. That's becasue we spend too much on guns and bombs, not just to protect us, but them also.

Becasue that's how empire works. Take a look at Rome, not everyone who joined up was conquored. Lots of people wanted to be part of the Roman Empire, as it meant security. It meant that a Roman garrison would be stationed in your town to keep the peace. We've got the same kind of deal here, we just do it with NATO (how many former soviet bloc countries just joined NATO?)

So anyway, this does not neccessarily mean the American empire is a bad thing. There is potential here for us, as citizens of this country, to do a lot of good in the world. It's up to us wether we want this to be a benvolent empire or a tyrannical one.

The meaning of the topic was eluding to the fact that the American military kinda likes to swing it's cock around. In this case, it smashed a helicoptor into a CIVILLIAN college campus in Okinawa (where they're already hated) and then quarrantined it off, didn't allow press or the police (WTF?) to enter. It's Japanese soil -- nowhere near a base.

In all honesty, I don't think they had any legal right to do that... the only thing I can think of is they didn't want the innards of the helicoptor to be leaked to Al Qaeda and other evil do-ers, as everyone knows that would really give the enemy an advantage. I can understand the pictures aspect -- but shunning the police is just one more step to Japan revolting.

You know, they were actually talking about reducing the US military presence, and perhaps shutting down a base or two before the N. Korea and 9/11 debacles occured. So much for that.

It is Japanese soil but there had to be some form of agreement between the US and Japan where US takes control in the event of a crash. The technology issue you mentioned GaijinPunch is one of the reasons but since it was a transport helicopter that is probably not the main issue. Most likely the reason has to do with any possible ordinance onboard. Can you imagine the crap the US would take if a Japanese firefighter or policeman were injured by something.

My guess is that the Japanese government is involved at some degree or at least has given their blessing. They probably don't want to seem weak to the Americans either so they're just not openly admitting it. I can't see the US just going in without permission unless it was absolutely vital. Especially considering the tension over the past few years and the upcoming redeployments.

This topic won't get locked as long as everything stays civil like now. I can understand GaijinPunch's point in this. The US sometimes step over that line in Japan which gives you the image that they think they own the country at times. I always joke with my wife saying that Okinawa will become the 51st state :smt043 Sure hope it doesn't.

Yeah.. I really think people would like America better, if America would stop bombing the other peoples of this planet.. Personally for me, America would really rise in my esteem, if they would cut a bit down on their exploitation of the worlds rescources.. The USA representing 4% of the global population, consume 75% of the worlds resources and contribute over 75% of the worlds pollution..
I thiks that is a bit over the top.. :smt009

Listen, don't take me to seriously.. :smt040 I'm just letting out a bit of steem. Not for a second do I blame the ordinary american worker for this situation, nor do I beleive the statistics are as bad as the "75% of the worlds resources.." But I do think there is a problem here, which results in the anti-amercan feelings in other countrys..

I know everyone know this, but just to remind anyone who might not remember, America is a continent with dozens of countries, and the United States is one of them. So let's try not to reduce the whole continent to one country

indeed, i'm myself a canadian, but when i talk about american , i talk about the united-state and no one else.

but that's true that some people think that we are all the same thing just because we are near of them , that's totally BS.

i totally agree with you, american have totally no rights to do this, its an offense from the americans to the japaneses and every other contries , like spitting on a face. japaneses autority should take this file not americans, how many times do you see murderers
quarrantined by themselves the place they made the murder , allowing no one else to enter it?

Americans think that rules aren't applicables to them, filming a prisoner of war (reference to:Sadma Husen) , going into war when the UN don't aprove it , (...) and after they say that they are fighting against terrorist.... wtf ?:smt017 ....

this is why a specialforum for politic should be made , politics aren't only who will vote for who in the next american election .

You know what I think would be hilarious, If we took all of our troops out of every country we have them in, and we stopped protecting all the countries that are in the so called "empire". Now, something happens, and one of those contires we were protecting starts getting attacked and they can't defend themselves. I can see the head lines now, "Where is the US when you need them".

Ok, so here is the situation, lets just call this country X. We did what you wanted and we left everyone alone, and we were just minding our own business like everyone wants. Well, county X gets attacked and they are defeated in a bloody war. Everyone gets mad because we did nothing to help country X at all. So everybody hates us because we did not protect a country we said we would protect. Or, county X gets attacked, and we go in to help them. We defeat the people trying to invade country X, but everyone hates us because we did not mind our own business, and now we are accused of bombing every country under the sun. No matter what we do, we just can't win.

Also, I don't like coments, such as "they think they are those who rule the world" and "like killing our planet or anything else" coming from some one who does not live in the US, and who apparently knows nothing about the US. Sorry, but we do not think we rule the world, and last time I checked we were not trying to kill the planet. This is exactly the kind of bullshit I am talking about. We try to defend a country that needs our help, and we are accused of destroying the world that we apparently think is all ours.

I am not trying to start a flame war; I am simply stating my opinion.

I totally disagree with you. What about all these contries that have no military, countries that we protect? It is not just about what we can "gain" from it.

Yes, but it seems we are the only country that has the balls to stand up and do what we believe in, no matter what the rest of the world says about us.

We went in Iraq to remove an evil dictator who killed his own people and destroyed his own cities. We have plenty of Oil in Alaska that we could use anytime, but instead we get our Oil from the Middle East, which helps their economy.

Osama Bin Laden is an evil person, why would you want him to live. He could just as easily attack an area in Europe as well as the US, but it seems like we are the only ones who want to stand up and do something about it.

I have never heard anything about the US threatening European countries, probably more lies. That may be how it looks over there, but if you actually lived in the US, and you actually saw what was happening, you would relize that a lot of the things you see and hear are lies that make the US look bad.

Once agian, I am not trying to start a flame war.

An evil dictator the american goverment put their themselves to have wage war aggainst iran

Osama Bin Laden is an evil person, why would you want him to live. He could just as easily attack an area in Europe as well as the US, but it seems like we are the only ones who want to stand up and do something about it.

Sure he's evil the CIA made him into a weapon that backfired on them.
Why should europe be cought in the middle of a battle the americans created themselves, osama doesn't want us hell he even offered a peace treaty to europe (which was of course refused)

I have never heard anything about the US threatening European countries, probably more lies. That may be how it looks over there, but if you actually lived in the US, and you actually saw what was happening, you would relize that a lot of the things you see and hear are lies that make the US look bad.

Well it's a fact that america has on political levels threatened european countries that were either with the americans or against them.

And it's 100% truth that the american goverment actually wrote a letter adressed to the dutch goverment stating that it would do anything to rescue americans if they were held to be trialed for warcrimes at the international warcrime court even an invasion.

We actually had a great laugh about it and there were even suggestions made to go sit at the beach and make it a day out if they actually did invade :smt043

And maybe it's not me that is getting lied to by international press but maybe your view is clouded by the american goverment manipulating the media and showing a one sided view like they tried when those pictures of american soldiers torturing iraki men showed up.

They tried to ban those pictures from the media as they do with dead soldiers just to let the american people think things are going well while dozens of soldiers die every day.

i totally agree with silverbolt, for everything he said from the ''i don't whant to start a flame war too'' to all other comments.

when i say the americans destroying our world and whant to conquer everything , i'm not talking about the people that live in american (well, for the most of part) that go to work everyday , make the ditches , wash their clothes and live their lifes . you're probally one of those too, alienworkshop and i don't blame you, not at all. im talkiing about those who gouvern the USA, those don't seem so dangerous to you, because they protect you ( and i don't blame them for this, not at all.) and because you're in the states , you don't see the point of view by the outside. again , i don't blame you for this , you can't control the USA, like alot of people can't. but when we say that

''The USA representing 4% of the global population, consume 75% of the worlds resources and contribute over 75% of the worlds pollution''

it's because its true, that we love the USA , bush, (anything/everyone else) or not , i didn't make the choice that the america didn't sign the kyoto protocol to stop killing the planet at little flames ( i don't know if i can say this in english...), and i don't think you did it too ( and whanted it).
and its true that the planet is dying , im not saying that its all the fault of the americans , not at all. every contries make pollution, but we know that its not good for our future (well, alot of us) and signed the kyoto protocol.

and, for my point of you too, americans are trying to rule the world...

    ---

it's true that the USA is the only country that have the balls to do what they do and to say what they whant to say. i agree with this, but i think they have too many balls ( :smt043) ,when they show videos of sadam, didn't listen the UN and totally making the europeans joining the fight by force and terror.... now, imagine if every countries have the balls to say what they really whant to say about the US..... (i don't say more , it would be read like a start of flaming and i really doN'T whant this....)

well, anyway, that's your point of view and this is mine , but by my opinion , i don't whant to begin a flame war too, comrade!

i would love that this topic continu on this step , whitout nay flames and that we could finally talk a bit about politics., without starting another war ( there's too many war for now , don't you think?

Don't be so naive and look beyond the propaganda you are asked to swallow whole. The US government does not 'protect' any nation' It invades, conquers, and subdues in its own interests.

So you have think you have the balls to 'stand up' and 'do what you beleive in' and [insert any other similiar propagandist term here]?
I suppose then that this logically includes your beeliefs include raping women, tprturing men, and sodomizing young boys in a nation the US 'liberated', under an official policy of sexual humiliation created by Donald Rumsfeld, abuses worse than anything even Saddam's troops ever did?

    No? Then?

Don't fool yourself. It's not YOU who is standing up and doing what you beelive in. It's the Bush administration, and they are doing what they will, regardless of wehat you think.

It's not up to you. As an American citizen you are powerless, and always have been, over what your government does. It wasn't the American Citizen who sent troops to Vietnam. It wasn't the American Citizen who nuclear-bombed Nagasaki. It wasn't the American Citizen who tortured and raped in Iraq. Support or protest aginst the actiosn of your administration in foreign policy is meaningless - the US administration will do what it wants to do, overt or covert, regardless. US troops are only where the US government has interests - not the American Citizen. Cambodia and Bosnia were left to drown in the blood of genocide because the US government had no interests otherwise, not the American Citizen.

So don't be so naive as to think you as a citizen can actually project America's image as one of benevloence or tyanny. American governments' foreign policy has always done that, will always do so, and has created the mass resentment against America as a whole as a result.

And the US government - throughout many administrations - has shown time and time again what category its empire falls into - tyranny.

That is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard in my life.

    Once again, bullshit.

Actually, we can see a lot more than you think we can. I don't watch news that is one sided, I can see what is going on, good or bad. I have seen a lot of good and bad things from Iraq. I have even had family in Irak at one time. I believe it is you who is getting the one sided news reports, news that only shows the bad things that happen in Iraq.

    re

This country gets the biggest kick out of pissing people off and taking their property. By the way, I do live in America, so I know what it's like. That's my take on the matter.

    Very typical, Alien Workshop.

Bash the truth and call it a load of bullshit just because it doesn't ft with your notion of 'my country, right or wrong'.

Try looking up the facts. It may help.

Seeing as you hold yourself to be so educated about what is goign on in 'Irak' (sic) , I'm curious on your thoughts about Rumsfeld's **official** policy of sexual humiliation of the Iraqi people to break down them down as an occupied people under the US, which has entailed the raping of Iraqi women and girls, the torture and rape of men, and sodomization of young boys, the deliberate murder of innocent men, women, and children - all documented by independent AI findings and Congress findings, and on videotape, no less?

Tell me - if a country invaded the US telling you that you were bing liberated, but instead locked you up on no charges - raped your wife and raped your sister - sodomized your little brother with a broomstick, - tortured your father to death - and stacked you in human pyramids while forcing you to masturbate other inmates - all on direct orders from the invading country's Secretary of Defense - are you actually going to continue to think that you are being liberated and that the invading nation only has your best interests at heart?

Are you going to continue to maintain that Bush actually sent troops to Iraq for 'liberation' and to 'help their economy'? How laughable.

Tell me, then, what makes Bush as the ruler of Iraq any better than Saddam when he has managed to commit crimes against humanity that not even the Ba'ath party and Saddam in Iraq dreamed of?

No surprise, really, when the rights of US citizens of Arab descent have been abused so badly, that overseas they have been violated outright.

Think for yourself. Look beyond the propaganda that is fed to you dialy under guide of patriotism.
