This auction copied all of the text from famicomworld. Unfortunately, he
left the link for the image. So famicomworld replaced the image. If you just happen to have any questions for the seller, please post if he replies...

Hmm, he states thanks to Famicom World for their permission. So, did they grant it, or is he just hotlinking without permission?

    Either way, it's very funny!

This is exactly why I try, whenever possible, to copy pics to imageshack, or at least reference the originating site. I've seen people hotlinking a LOT on this forum, though.

It is actually a big problem. I had someone hotlink a picture hosted by me for their myspace page. It was a band, and a popular one at that. I found myself with about 10,000 hits per day to a 250k animated GIF. That's what, 2.5Gb a day of bandwidth?

Naturally, I did the ol'switcheroo. I got an irate message from the band's manager. I replied that they did not have permission to hotlink and suggested that I would send them a bill for my hosting charges. I really should have!

I've posted it on here before, but for those who didn't see and if you enjoyed that....

    Behold, the ol' switcheroo!

The Guardian got goatse'd not so long back. The odd retro auction I can kind of understand, but a national newspaper ought to know better than to hotlink.

Actually, it's more common than you may think.

I remember not so long ago looking up a car I saw in London. The numberplate was 2 B. I thought maybe it might have been a celeb. I found the person seems to also own NOT 2B. Someone had taken a picture of both together (IIRC) and someone reported to them that their picture was in a national newspaper, or on their site. It turns out they didn't get permission. The photographer contacted them, and they decided to settle by paying him for the use of his photo.

Feel free to hotlink something from gamengai. I let Apache do all the work for me.

Well yes, you can use hotlink protection. That stops YOU from using it legitimately, though, e.g. for eBay or forums. That's why I leave mine off.

Last time someone hotlinked my images for a Propeller Arena auction, I changed it all to lemonparty (NSFW if you somehow dont know it) pictures. It worked.

He didn't have permission. Somehow he heard we weren't happy and he added that info after the auction started... (he added that info before we started changing the picture). Then we started changing the picture and then I put in the minimum bid so that he can't change the auction anymore.

The hotlink protection on my hosting lets me turn hotlinking off except for certain domains, I turn it on for this site for example.

I always had fun when people would hotlink me. I would always replace with goatse or tubgirl or some shit and be like SURPRISE!!!!! It's fun to mess with the mongoloids of the web.

That's because each domain is a separate package. This means you need a spare domain that you don't mind hotlinking with. It still comes out of your bandwidth, though, so what's the point really? Unless you have pics on your site you don't want shared but you want to use your own hosting to hotlink.

Of course, using the protection STILL uses up bandwidth, as it gives the hotlinking forbidden picture in place!

Imageshack is fine for re-hosting images instead of hotlinking, but I'd never put my own pictures on it.

    Yeah, umm.... no thanks.

Mine doesn't do a "no hotlinking" image, it just doesn't serve the image unless it's in the whitelist of URL's.

Well, that's better in a way, although it still means loading a script (what is it, CGI?) and denying the request, so still takes bandwidth.

Even if the script is small (1kb), 10,000 hits a day is still 10Mb of bandwidth. Around 300Mb of bandwidth a month is still a fair bit.

Besides, switcheroo can be fun ;-) hehehe
