Ah looks cool. 150 isn't a bad price. Does it have some sort of cartidge slot for games specifically made for it. Or is it just a media handheld with a memory card slot?

In theory yes , but you should wait till May 20th until the official Break out box comes out for people to start implementing all kinds of drivers .

It uses SD for storage . And as of now SD shit is cheap as hell . I just got a 4 gig card for 94 dollars . See my hot deals thread for some direction LINKED

Also i don't want to come off as a salesman , but I really love this thing and seeing how this site is pretty much devoted to the revival of old school gaming development I thought it was a perfect fit .

If you want a real list of what this bad boy can do here are the official lists off the wiki .

    Software currently working

    Emulators status

    All the WIPs

There is also a good amount of just freeware for it . Check them out in the file archive HERE

Also browsing the file archive will give you a good idea of the stuff it does .

Edit: Also i have just recently gotten into using the Scummvm engine and I forgot how much I loved Sam and Max and Day of the tenticle . And with dosbox and commadore 64 emus you can bring your old pc games to portable life .

How good is the video out on this new system? I may be interested in buying one if it has a decent video out. Most Handhelds have really poor video outs though so I'm wondering about this one.

    Full 720x480 .

It even plays xvid movies at full res . Pretty much perfect , But it is S-Viseo . This thing even looks good on my 52" HD . Check out the intro video that some fanboy made .

http://www.gp2xtr.com/download/vdo/gp2xtr_intro.avi ignore the matrix bad aspect ratio this kid just had a bad rip .

And when playing movies or playing higher res games on the system only (not on TV out) It uses hardware to downsample the graphics so you will not see a slowdown in playback .

I actually just had my iPod stolen.

I realize that the GP2X is not as portable or as functional an mp3 player, but since it plays videogames I'm considering it as a replacement, $150 + that $100 4gb SD card is a sweet deal.

How is the MP3 playback? How long does battery life last playing music? Can you turn the screen or backlight off?

As far as I know, the screen is the same from the GP32.

No ghosting the screen is nice .

And for music playback the lcd does turn off . In most benchmarks people get about 6 hours playing music with 2500 mah AA's . The Mp3 menu and interface should not really be compared to the IPOD as the IPOD is the obvious winner . But it does get the job done . As of now their is only one alternative MP3 player for it that is based off of ffmpeg LINKED .

As far as the stock one here is a quote from another froum

Edit: I believe that the playlist thing is a feature in the latest firmware but i have not tested it so don't quote me on that .

I checked out a GP2X forum and I'm seeing posts mentioning stuff like "online registration" and "filename editing".

Do you have to hook your GP2x to the net and register it before it's even functional? Just how easy is it to copy/upload roms and stuff to the device? Also, how stable is the underlying OS anyway? Any mysterious crashes, lockups or other flaky behavior that results in corrupt SD cards?

Never heard of either of those .

You can use an sd card reader to get stuff onto the SD their is no protection whatsoever , or you can hook it up via usb .

As far as tech issues some people have bricked their devices flashing thier firmware with batteries that were not charged , but this can be recovered using a Jtag cable . As far as sd corruption the only ones i have heard of were casued by windows and not the GP2X . People pullig thier cards out of readers while windows was still writing to them .

People have also allready started releasing pre-built games and rom sets made for the handheld . Just google GP2X torrents .

Ooh, S-Video out is good enough for me. I'm getting a new HD AQUAS Sharp TV soon (I hope) so it should look nice enough on that. I'm really getting one for the 8 bit and 16 bit emulation. That will really save on the number of units needed to be connected to the TV. So there's no bleeding? None of that crappy crawl effect that NTSC TVs seem to have with composite video (PAL owners rejoice !!)? If not then I'm well interested in one if it can run PCE, SNES, MD and Neo Geo emulators perfectly. Also how is the D-Pad on the unit and is it possible to attach a USB control pad?

Ok you just had to bring up the Dpad didn't you ??

With the cap replacement that comes on new units the dpad is way better . But it still is not an 8 way dpad , it is a fake analouge stick with 16 way directional .

This is the one thing that pisses me off about the system , I personally love the feel of a classic nintendo 8 way dpad . So for some games you will find yourself pissed off at the controller .

And the only issue I have noticed with the TV out is on dlp or lcd rear projection it does flicker at stationary menus ( much like an xbox in media center would ) But it looks perfect on real lcds and regular tv's .

There says not every neogeo game is compatible, do you have a list of them?

BTW, I thought the Dpad was 12-way, not 16...

K but the list isn't that well either, a lot of games are listed like working yet they have several issues.

So the audio needs to be downsampled to 11250Hz and it's still not full speed? Shame, I was under the impression that it was full speed. I think I will hold on until they can improve on that a bit.

I also see that SNES emulation is pretty poor too.

and now to find someone to buy it for me. Someone who cares and loves me..hmm..new girlfriend-time.

It's the kind of open-source handheld you can travel around the world with and enjoy years of classics. Too bad battery isnt up to 8 hours.

Well i was trying to show games that really push the limits of the GP2X and as you might know SVCChaos and KOF 2003 are two titles that are pretty hard to emulate.

Its kind of hard for me to show gameplay and hold a camera but stuff like metal slug , puzzle bobble , and leauge bowling run near perfect .

    Here is Metal Slug

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU8XHCGGZ2A

And as far as Snes , yes it is not perfect yet . But with Reesy's latest build of sqidgesnes alot of the goodies are full speed like super mario world . And snes is one of those things i can garuntee will fullspeed once a dev spends a decent amount of time on it .
